Book excerpt: An action research project report was complete to discuss how homework completion and motivation is an ongoing issue and debate within the public schools. This is especially true in the middle school setting. The teacher researchers of this project chose to conduct a study in order to increase homework completion and motivation of middle school students using Teacher Researcher B's reading/language arts 6th grade classroom. The study consisted of 30 student participants and took place during the time period of January 29, 2007, until May 9, 2007. During the teacher researchers' review of the literature, numerous influences were revealed as to why homework completion and motivation is an area of frustration for teachers, parents, and students. These influences include poor student habits and study skills, lack of parental support and/or understanding, poor environment, parent complaints of schools and teachers, teacher concerns and lack of communication between home, school, and community, and finally the special education community of learners. Teacher researchers used parent and student surveys to document evidence of the problem. There were three interventions/strategies the teacher researchers used for this action research project. Homework charting/graphing was used for each class. The students graphed their homework completion with teacher supervision on a daily basis. A ticket/reward system was implemented in conjunction with the graphing/charting giving the students an opportunity to earn prizes/rewards for homework completion. The parents were apprised weekly of their child's progress by receiving a home note on a weekly basis, outlining their child's weekly progress, or lack thereof. The teacher researchers found the action research project to have both positive and negative results. Though student motivation increased at the beginning of the intervention, motivation seemed to decline by the end of the intervention. The teacher researchers believe this decline to be attributed to the intervention occurring toward the end of the school year. A lack of teacher consistency and enthusiasm toward the end of the intervention and a lack of parent consistency in responding to home notes were other factors believed to contribute to the lack of student motivation. The most positive feedback of the project came from parents. Parents responded positively to the consistent feedback concerning their child's progress. Though the teacher researchers would change several areas of the interventions, the weekly parent communication would be an intervention they would continue and recommend. Appended are: (1) Teacher Survey; (2) Consent to Participate; (3) Parent Survey; (4) Teacher Record Book; (5) Teacher Researcher's Weekly Log; (6) Student Survey; (7) Behavior Modification Chart; and (8) Weekly Home Note. (Contains 4 tables and 35 figures.) [Master of Arts Action Research Project, Saint Xavier University.].

Book excerpt: The purpose of this action research project report was to increase the homework completion rate of middle school students through the use of interventions. The participants in this study came from one public middle school. The participants were thirty-four 6th grade students in language arts, respectively. The intervention took place from September 10, 2007 through November 20, 2007. The targeted students at one public middle school in northwestern Illinois exhibited low levels of homework completion. The teacher researchers surveyed teachers, parents, and students, in addition to completing teacher observation checklists for each of the targeted students. The teacher survey asked questions pertaining to students turning in homework, and receiving consequences for not doing so. The parent survey revealed that students do not bring homework assignments home but do ask for assistance when needed. The student survey indicated that parents helped their child with their homework assignments less than half the time (zero to three days a week). Also, students indicated that they fill out their planners most of the time (four to five days a week). The teacher observation checklists showed that incomplete homework assignments were a significant problem for the targeted students. One of the interventions that was chosen to implement was positive reinforcement through the Gotcha system. This intervention has been referred to as a way for students to receive positive feedback, as well as a way to motivate students to increase their rate of homework completion. Another intervention chosen to use included increasing parental involvement in the completion of student homework through the use of daily homework planners. This intervention has been used as a strategy that has led to increased parental involvement, and an increase in the homework completion rate (Bryan & Burstein, 2004, Teacher). This intervention involved students writing assignments in their homework planners daily and taking the planners home to have them signed by their parents. By doing this students and parents were establishing a homework completion routine. The teacher researchers found that the use of Gotcha's and student planners seemed to positively effect the parent involvement rate. However, the percentage of incomplete assignments increased by seven percent. The teacher researchers also found that fewer students asked their parents for help with their homework. The teacher researchers believe that the use of planners helped students to organize their homework, and made parents more aware of homework assignments. Six appendixes are included: (1) Student Survey; (2) Parent Survey; (3) Teacher Survey; (4) Teacher observation Log; (5) Sample of Gotcha; and (6) Homework Planner. (Contains 2 tables and 22 graphs.) Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite calls for a more preventive and developmental mode of functioning, school counseling has tended to be driven by a reactive and sometimes crisis orientation. Like social workers and school, counseling, and clinical psychologists, school counselors typically function to alleviate deficits, often in a small percentage of the students they serve. Although this orientation has served school counselors well in many instances, it is not empowering, it does not serve all students, and it does not replace those deficits with the type of positive characteristics and abilities that schools are attempting to develop. This is the first book to provide a comprehensive look at the theory, research, and intervention strategies that comprise a strengths-based, developmental approach to school counseling. In keeping with ASCA recommendations, the Strengths-Based School Counseling (SBSC) framework discusses academic, personal/social and career development outcomes for all students at the elementary, middle and secondary school levels. Other key features include: integrative framework?SBSC builds upon contemporary research from a variety of areas: school counseling, developmental psychology, school psychology, education, positive psychology, resiliency, and social work. evidence-based interventions?detailed examples of successful evidence-based interventions and environments are presented at the elementary, middle, and high school levels for each major developmental area (academic, personal/social, and career) identified in ASCA?s National Model. readability and pedagogy?beautifully written, the text includes lists of key points, tables of student strengths, illustrative examples, and student exercises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this action research project was to increase homework completion through the use of motivating strategies. There were approximately 75 students, 100 parents, and three teacher researchers involved in this study. The three intervention strategies used were 15 minutes of class time, extrinsic rewards, and assignment notebook checks. This study was conducted from August 2008 through May 2009. The intended outcome of this research project was to increase students''motivation to complete homework. The teacher researchers have noticed a change within the family structure. The changes that have occurred include an increase in single-parent homes, a rise in non-English speaking homes, and pressure on students to excel outside of school. These changes have forced many students to choose between homework, family, and society. The targeted students exhibited a lack of homework completion, which negatively affected the students in the classroom. There were many causes for this issue. The teacher researchers focused on the lack of motivation among students to complete their homework. After the three teacher researchers completed the intervention strategies in their classrooms, they compared their results to the baseline data. The data showed that intervention two, Extrinsic Rewards, resulted in the highest increase in student homework completion. Intervention one, 15 Minutes of Class Time, and intervention three, Assignment Notebooks, did not yield as large of an increase in homework completion. Seven appendixes are included: (1) Parent Pre-Survey; (2) Student Pre-Survey; (3) Teacher Researcher's Homework Check-Off Log-Weekly; (4) Teacher Researcher's Homework Ticket Reward Log-Weekly; (5) Teacher Researcher's Homework/Assignment Notebook Log-Weekly; (6) Parent Post-Survey; and (7) Student Post-Survey. Book excerpt: At the end of elementary school, students often find themselves unprepared for the more complex middle school environment. Students facing this daunting transition are at risk for school disengagement, yet at this grade level, they are still concerned about homework performance (Akos, 2002). Since 28% of average-achieving students have problems completing their homework (Polloway, Epstein, & Foley, 1992), the development of homework interventions while students are still motivated is crucial. Unfortunately, many interventions are written as handbooks without supporting empirical evidence and are not held up to the rigors of scientific testing. This study examined the effects of a homework intervention on sixth graders with organizational difficulties using a withdrawal of treatment (ABA) single-subject design. The intervention consisted of systematic daily adult support and prompting of student homework completion steps during school, including the use of a student homework planner to write down homework assignments. The study included a homework checklist to ensure all intervention steps were followed and as an important measure of treatment fidelity. Although the homework intervention presented here was effective for some students, results were mixed. Two students, when compared to classmates, improved their homework completion levels with the onset of this intervention and reached more socially acceptable levels of homework completion. Two students showed no significant changes in overall rates of homework completion. For one participant, the homework intervention actually coincided with a sharp decrease in overall rates of homework completion--exactly the opposite of the desired result. The organizational measure given to students and parents before and after the intervention phase of this study did not yield significant results.

The motivation for this capstone was the continued struggle for students to learn mathematics content in one teacher's Algebra II classrooms, one cause believed to be the lack of homework completion. The author includes research related to increasing homework completion among secondary students and implements three of these strategies in her classrooms: increasing student feedback, restructuring homework and increasing teacher feedback, and pink slips. Her studies showed a significant increase in homework completion from the previous year's Algebra II class to most recent class.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this research was to study [middle school] students' perceptions of homework and uncover the underlying factors that motivate them to complete the assigned tasks. The main question that requires an immediate solution is what are students' perceptions of homework and what factors intrinsically or extrinsically motivate them to get the assigned work completed? 1. In what ways do students perceive homework? 2. What role do intrinsic motivators play in students' homework completion? 3. What role do extrinsic motivators play play in students' homework completion?"--Leaf 13. In her conclusion the author discusses various factors that affect the completion of homework: the communication of the purpose and value of an assignment, presenting it in attractive and student-friendly manner, allowance of sufficient in-school time for completion, and acknowledgement of the pivotal role of parental involvement.
