Book excerpt: Many nonverbal adults with mental retardation endure challenges in the community due to their lack of functional communication skills. Two forms of alternative/augmentative communication systems that are often used to facilitate functional communication are the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and manual sign. This study compared the total training time and total number of trial blocks to acquire mands for preferred items and mands under transitive CEO control. In addition, this study examined generalization across settings and communicative partners and tested for the emergence of untrained tacts and intraverbals. The results of this study suggest that for nonverbal adults with mental retardation and little to no history of direct instruction, PECS was acquired more rapidly and in a fewer number of trial blocks than manual sign for both mands for preferred items and mands for items not in view. In addition, mands generalized across settings and communicative partners using PECS as the response modality. Furthermore, following PECS training for mands for preferred items, untrained tacts and intraverbals emerged. The results of this study suggest that PECS training may lead to the emergence of untrained verbal operants due the use of multiply controlled verbal operants that are programmed into training.
