Book excerpt: Yams (Dioscorea spp) occupy an important position among the tropical and subtropical tuber crops. It is a major source of calories for millions of people in the African continent. In India too, they are widely cultivated in the southern and north castern parts. The propagation in yam is by vegetative means. A mother tuber (ware yam) weighing about 750-1500g is usually cut into smaller pieces of about 200-250g known as "setts" are used for planting a new crop. The planting material is hence a costly input since a hectare of land would require about three tons of seed yam. This accounts for about 20% of the production per hectare which therefore is a major economic handicap for the yam grower.

Book excerpt: This study of the dioscorea genus or yam, consisting of 600 species, is a synthesis of new information. In this world of famine, the yam must play a leading role in the regions it is grown. Its cultivation may even increase once the problems which this book highlights have been resolved. The text fills a critical gap, summarizing what is known about the yam; it is also significant because it asks many questions, and encourages further experimentation.
