Book excerpt: The Improved Landmine Detector Concept (ILDC) Project was initiated to develop a prototype vehicle-mounted mine detector for low metal content & nonmetallic mines for a peacekeeping role on roads. The system will consist of a teleoperated vehicle carrying a highly sensitive electromagnetic induction detector, an infrared imager, ground probing radar, and a thermal neutron activation detector for confirmation. This report discusses results of performance trials of the individual detectors, various design configurations & their trade-offs, and the fusion of data from the detectors to reduce false alarm rate & increase probability of detection, a key element to the success of the system.

U.S. land mine detection capabilities are limited and largely unchanged since the Second World War. A U.S. military that now uses million dollar cruise missiles, tens of million dollar aircraft, and billions of dollar ships still generally detects land mines with a metal detector and a probe. The Department of Defense (DOD) has an extensive research program aimed at developing new detectors to improve its capabilities. Improving DOD s land mine detection capability is a challenging technological issue. Because of the threat that land mines pose to U.S. armed forces, you requested that we assess the abilities of competing technological options to address DOD s mission needs for land mine detection. Specifically, our objectives were to determine whether DOD (1) employs an effective strategy for identifying and evaluating the most promising land mine detection technologies and (2) is investing in the most promising technologies to fully address mission needs.

Book excerpt: Throughout much of machine vision’s early years the infrared imagery has suffered from return on investment despite its advantages over visual counterparts. Recently, the ?scal momentum has switched in favor of both manufacturers and practitioners of infrared technology as a result of today’s rising security and safety challenges and advances in thermographic sensors and their continuous drop in costs. This yielded a great impetus in achieving ever better performance in remote surveillance, object recognition, guidance, noncontact medical measurements, and more. The purpose of this book is to draw attention to recent successful efforts made on merging computer vision applications (nonmilitary only) and nonvisual imagery, as well as to ?ll in the need in the literature for an up-to-date convenient reference on machine vision and infrared technologies. Augmented Perception in Infrared provides a comprehensive review of recent deployment of infrared sensors in modern applications of computer vision, along with in-depth description of the world’s best machine vision algorithms and intel- gent analytics. Its topics encompass many disciplines of machine vision, including remote sensing, automatic target detection and recognition, background modeling and image segmentation, object tracking, face and facial expression recognition, - variant shape characterization, disparate sensors fusion, noncontact physiological measurements, night vision, and target classi?cation. Its application scope includes homeland security, public transportation, surveillance, medical, and military. Mo- over, this book emphasizes the merging of the aforementioned machine perception applications and nonvisual imaging in intensi?ed, near infrared, thermal infrared, laser, polarimetric, and hyperspectral bands.

Book excerpt: This research report presents a procedure for landmine classification using an artificial neural network that can respond to complex- valued input data. This is because the acquired data in the form of scattering parameters at different frequencies are complex-valued and disregard of the phase works against the proven importance of phase in multidimensional signal processing. The complex-valued backpropagation algorithm and its variants are implemented on acquired data to classify mines of different types and shapes. The importance of noise-contaminated phase as well as the role of partial phase information in image reconstruction is also investigated. The role of wavelet superresolution for multiresolution analysis of landmines in particular and image analysis in general is also reported. Analysis of an image acquisition system composed of an array of sensors, where each sensor has a subarray of sensing elements of suitable size, is provided for increasing the spatial resolution and implement filtering of image sequences beyond the performance bound of technologies that constrain the manufacture of imaging devices. Military and commercial applications of the research are highlighted by videomosaicing and superresolution of regions of interest from a real noisy and blurred video sequence.

Concerned about the slow pace of demining, the Office of Science and Technology asked RAND to assess potential innovative technologies being explored and to project what funding would be required to foster the development of the more promising ones. The authors of this report suggest that the federal government undertake a research and development effort to develop a multisensor mine detection system over the next five to eight years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improving the probability of detection of landmines is a challenging task for many scientists all around the world. The goal of this research is to be a part of this challenging work to investigate techniques for landmine detection. Two techniques for detecting the landmines, one in depth domain and the other in frequency domain, have been studied and a few modifications are suggested, along with the results. The data collected from Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) from various test sites is used to evaluate the performance of these detection techniques. The first technique is proposed for use with Handheld GPR systems, while the second technique is proposed for use with Vehicle mounted GPR systems. The techniques proved to be useful in improving the detection of low metal or plastic mines.

It is not only a problem for military, but also for humanitarian concern. The goal of this research is to propose some techniques for landmine detection. Two advanced feature based techniques are developed. One algorithm applies the clustering method based on the spectral feature vectors formed by the energy density spectra of return sensor signals, the idea behind is to find out whether there are some "hidden patterns" among the spectral feature vectors. The other one is the subspace detector technique that utilizes the energy density spectra of return signals directly. These techniques are tested in various testing data sets collected from the vehicle mounted ground penetrating radar to evaluate their ability to improve the detection result and reduce the false alarm rates. Both of them are proved to be useful in improving the detection of land mines.

Book excerpt: In response to deficiencies in current land mine detection capabilities, the Improved Land Mine Detection Project to develop & test a remote controlled, vehicle-mounted mine detection system employing multiple sensors and real-time data fusion technology. The primary sensor suite includes, among other detectors, a commercially developed wideband ground penetrating radar (GPR). Preliminary testing has established that GPR detection performance is strongly influenced by space and time-variable soil conditions. This report describes a combined laboratory-field investigation of mine-lane soils to characterize both spatial variability in electrical properties along a test lane and time-dependent fluctuation related to environmental variables, including precipitation & temperature. The work also involved construction of an experimental test bed to investigate the influence of climate-driven soil electrical property variation on the GPR signature of four standard land mine surrogates. The report begins with a review of pertinent electromagnetic theory, then describes the experimental procedures, presents the resulting data, and discusses the findings in relation to the feasibility of the GPR approach, and makes recommendations for further work.

Book excerpt: Landmines continue to be a threat to both military and civilian communities throughout the world. Current methods of detection, while better than nothing, could certainly be improved. Seismic SONAR is a promising new technology that may help save countless lives. The goal of this thesis was to advance Seismic SONAR development by introducing a mobile source which could be easily used in practical applications. A small tracked vehicle with dual inertial mass shakers mounted on top was used for the mobile source. The source accurately transmitted the shaker signal into the ground, and its mobility made it a practical choice for field operations. It excited Rayleigh waves, as desired, but also generated undesirable P-waves and was not found to be directional. It proved incapable of finding a target. Improvements, such as a deploying an array of mobile sources and a stronger source, should vastly enhance the performance of such tracked vehicles in seismic SONAR mine detection and should be pursued.
