Download or read book British Campaign Medals of the First World War written by Peter Duckers and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-10-20 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain has issued medals rewarding war service since at least the early nineteenth century, and increasingly through the period of its imperial expansion prior to 1914, but examples of many of the early types are now scarce. However, few families escaped some involvement with “the Great War” of 1914 18, and many still treasure the medals awarded to their ancestors for wartime service. Today, with a growing interest in British military history and particularly in family history and genealogy, more and more people want to trace their ancestors' past. This book looks in detail at the origin, types and varieties of the British medals awarded for general war service between 1914 and '18, and gives advice on researching the awards and their recipients.

Book Synopsis Medals and Ribbons of the U. S. Navy by : Col Frank C Foster
Download or read book Medals and Ribbons of the U. S. Navy written by Col Frank C Foster and published by Moa Press. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medals and Ribbons of U.S. Navy is the first complete illustrated history of the medals and ribbons of the Navy from the Revolution up to today. Every type and variation of Navy military medals and ribbons along with their appropriate devices is shown and described in color. The photography and illustrations are exceptional. There are also chapters on how to determine a veteran's military medals and ribbons. Perhaps most unique is a series of U.S. Navy veterans' military awards displays covering World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Liberation of Kuwait, Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Global War on Terror. The detail sections show how veterans, retirees and families can claim their medals. A comprehensive guide lays out how to wear medals and insignia for active duty, National Guard and reserve service members as well as the correct protocol for the wear of medals and insignias on the uniform by veterans and retirees. The correct order of wear for all U.S. Navy medals and ribbons is laid out in precise and beautiful detail to include additional information on how multiservice ribbons are worn by veterans. Perhaps one of the nicest additions to this book is coverage of foreign decorations, foreign campaign medals, United Nations and NATO medals authorized Naval personnel. It is a single source full-color illustrated guide for all U.S. Navy medals and ribbons over the past almost 200 years. The United States Armed Forces have produced over 100 new military awards in 70 plus years since the unification of the Armed Forces in 1947, or an average of over one new award per year. While the establishment of so many awards is a clear indication of the many missions and roles thrust upon the Armed Forces since the United States assumed its mantle of world leadership it also reflects the importance of medals and ribbons to an all volunteer Naval force. Medals and Ribbons of U.S. Navy is designed to be a definitive illustrated reference and guide covering United States Navy decorations, medals and ribbons for veterans, their families, active duty and reserve personnel. It is also meant as a single source for the military decorations and medals of every Navy veteran.

This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This commemoration booklet focuses on naval air power during the final years of the Vietnam War. For much of this period, Navy aircraft sought to hamper the flow of supplies down the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos—a huge investment in air power resources that ultimately proved fruitless. After North Vietnam’s invasion of the South in 1972, however, Navy tactical aviation, as well as naval gunfire support, proved critical, not only in blunting the offensive but also in persuading North Vietnam to arrive at a peace agreement in Paris in1973. The Navy’s forward presence saved the day in 1972 and allowed President Nixon to finally achieve “peace with honor.”
Book Synopsis The Medal of Honor by : Dwight S. Mears
Download or read book The Medal of Honor written by Dwight S. Mears and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2018-08-22 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Medal of Honor may be America’s highest military decoration, but all Medals of Honor are not created equal. The medal has in fact consisted of several distinct decorations at various times and has involved a number of competing statutes and policies that rewarded different types of heroism. In this book, the first comprehensive look at the medal’s historical, legal, and policy underpinnings, Dwight S. Mears charts the complex evolution of these developments and differences over time. The Medal of Honor has had different qualification thresholds at different times, and indeed three separate versions—one for the army and two for the navy—existed contemporaneously between World Wars I and II. Mears traces these versions back to the medal’s inception during the Civil War and continues through the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan—along the way describing representative medal actions for all major conflicts and services as well as legislative and policy changes contemporary to each period. He gives particular attention to retroactive army awards for the Civil War; World War I legislation that modernized and expanded the army’s statutory award authorization; the navy’s grappling with both a combat and noncombat Medal of Honor through much of the twentieth century; the Vietnam-era act that ended noncombat awards and largely standardized the Medal of Honor among all services; and the perceived decline of Medals of Honor awarded in the ongoing Global War on Terror. Mears also explores the tradition of awards via legislative bills of relief; extralegislative awards; administrative routes to awards through Boards of Correction of Military Records; restoration of awards previously revoked by the army in 1917; judicial review of military actions in federal court; and legislative actions intended to atone for historical discrimination against ethnic minorities. Unprecedented in scope and depth, his work is sure to be the definitive resource on America’s highest military honor.
