Book excerpt: Objetivo geral deste trabalho foi avaliar o emprego da técnica de marcação da planta com 15N para a estimativa do total de N acumulado no sistema radicular da soja, seu impacto no balanço de N no sistema solo-planta, em sistema de plantio direto e convencional, e sua relação com a disponibilidade de N do solo e desempenho da cultura do sorgo, plantada em sucessão. O trabalho foi conduzido na área experimental da Embrapa Agrobiologia, Seropédica, RI. Foi composto de quatro experimentos, dois em casa de vegetação e dois no campo. Em casa de vegetação, avaliou-se o método isotópico, no sentido de verificar possíveis limitações na estimativa do N do solo derivado do sistema radicular da soja e não recuperado pelo método de escavação (NRnr). O experimento 1 teve como objetivo avaliar a diluição do 15N no tecido da planta da soja, após a marcação, devido ao acúmulo de fitomassa durante o desenvolvimento da planta. O experimento 2 teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito da exsudação de 15N da parte aérea de plantas de soja, devido a chuva ou irrigação, o que poderia contaminar o solo com o isótopo e superestimar o NRnr. O fornecimento de água foi feito de forma localizada, molhando-se apenas o solo, ou simulando-se uma chuva. Houve diluição do 15N no tecido da planta de soja após a marcação e em função dessa variação no enriquecimento de 15N nas raízes de soja o NRnr pode ser superestimado. A exsudação de 15N da parte aérea da soja marcada, sob o efeito da chuva ou irrigação por aspersão, quando não controlada, pode elevar o enriquecimento de 15N no solo e superestimar o NRnr. Nos experimentos em condições de campo, quantificou-se o N acumulado no sistema radicular da soja, incluindo o NRnr, e a sua contribuição para o balanço de N do solo e produção da cultura do sorgo, plantado em sucessão à soja. O experimento 3 teve como objetivo quantificar o NRnr na cultura da soja e o efeito do sistema radicular no incremento de produção do sorgo (Sorghum bicolor), e o experimento 4 teve como objetivos avaliar o efeito da cultura da soja no balanço de N do solo, considerando o N do sistema radicular, incluindo tanto o N das raízes visíveis como o NRnr, estimado no experimento 3; a disponibilidade do N do solo através da técnica do "valor A" e a sua relação com a produtividade do sorgo plantado em sucessão. O N das raízes não recuperadas (NRnr), em condições de campo, representou 81% do N do sistema radicular e 16% do N da planta inteira. O sistema radicular da soja contribuiu com 10% do N total acumulado pela cultura do sorgo, no entanto, o sistema radicular da soja não contribuiu significativamente para o aumento da produtividade desta cultura. A soja, independente do sistema de plantio, proporcionou um balanço de N positivo para o solo, principalmente quando se contabiliza o N do solo derivado das raízes não recuperadas pelo método de escavação (NRnr). O balanço de N foi mais positivo sob PD, devido à maior contribuição da FBN para a soja neste sistema. Houve incremento de N disponível no solo após a cultura da soja e do milho, em relação ao pousio, e isso refletiu na produtividade do sorgo plantado em sucessão. The general objectives of this study were to apply the 15N leaf labelling technique to a) estimate the total N accumulated in the root system of soybean and its impact on the soil N balance under direct drill and conventional tillage and, b) to evaluate the residual effect of soybean on the availability of soil N and its influence on the growth of a subsequent crop of sorghum. The study was conducted at Embrapa Agrobiologia, Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro. Four experiments were perfonned; two in the greenhouse and two in the field. In the greenhouse the 15N isotope technique was evaluated with the objective of examining possible limitations of the method to estimate the N in the soil derived from the root system of soybean not recovered in the roots dug up from the soil (Non-recoverable root N - NRRN). In Experiment 1 the dilution of the applied 15N in the plant tissues was followed over the duration of plant growth. In Experiment 2 the possibility that 15N-labelled N was washed from the surface of the shoots by simulated rainfall was investigated, which could be responsible for contaminating the soil with 15N and thus overestimating the NRRN .The plants were irrigated either by simulated rainfall or by addition of the water directly to the soil. The data from Experiment 1 showed a progressive dilution of 15N after leaf labelling and as a result of this a variation of 15N enrichment in the roots of soybean, which suggested that NRRN was overestimated. The results of Experiment 2 showed that there was more 15N-labelled N in the soil when the plants were subjected to simulated rainfall than when water was applied only to the soil, such that NRRN was overestimated when the plants were exposed to rainfall. In the field experiments the N accumulated by the soybean including the NRRN was estimated, and from this was calculated the contribution of N the soil N balance, and this result was compared to the actual residual N benefit to a subsequent crop of sorghum. In Experiment 3 the estimate of the non-recoverable root N (NRRN) in field conditions amounted to 81 % ofthe total below-ground N, or 16 % of whole plant N. In Experiment 4 the results showed that 10 % of the total N accumulated by the sorghum was derived from the soybean root system, but that there was no residual effect of the soybean on the productivity of the subsequent sorghum crop. Regardless of the tillage system, the soybean left a positive N balance in the soil principally when the NRRN was taken into account. The N balance was more positive under direct drill than under conventional tillage, owing to the higher icontribution of N2 fixation under the fonner management system. There was an increase in the availability of soil N after either a soybean or maize crop in comparison with a natural fallow, and this was reflected in the productivity of sorghum planted in succession.

Book excerpt: Phytomass and Primary Production of the Various Vegetational Zones and of the Entire Biosphere The biosphere is that thin layer at the earth's surface in which living organisms exist and biological cycling takes place. It includes the upper horizons of the soil in which plants root, the atmosphere near the ground, (insofar as organisms penetrate this space), and all the surface waters. More than 99% of the earth's biomass is phytomass, to which we shall limit our discussion. Amounts of phytomass are distinctly related to vegeta tional zones. Because accurate determination of phytomass and primary production is difficult, only gross estimates have been available until recently. However, in 1970, Bazilevich et al. published (in Russian) more accurate calculations, based on the rapidly accumulating literature, for the various thermal zones and bioclimatic regions of the earth. These authors calculated mean phyto mass and mean annual primary production for the various regions as dry mass (in tons) per hectare. On the basis of measurements of the areas covered by the individual regions, excluding rivers, lakes, glaciers, and permanent snow, total phytomass and total annual primary production for the various regions were obtained (see table). The sum of these figures is the phytomass and annual production of the land surface of the earth. In addition, the table gives corresponding data for the waters of the earth. The values involved are potential i. e. , they are based on natural vegetation uninfluenced by man.

In a second printing in 1988 it was possible to complete a few literature references and to correct some misprints. However, vigorous research has taken place over the past five years in various areas of tropical climate dynamics, especially in the atmosphere-ocean mechanisms of climate anomalies, climate prediction, ocean circulation, and paleoclimates. Promising progress has also been made in the application of general circulation modelling to tropical climate problems. In the present second edition, named "Climate Dynamics of the Tropics", I have attempted to incorporate much of the recent work to late 1990. Chapters 8 and 9 have been essentially re-written, and major additions have been made to Chapters 4 and 12 in particular. I would like to acknowledge the continued support by the U.S. National Science Foundation over the past five years. B. Parthasarathy, Poona, and H.
