This historical study is a descriptive look at the past forty years, and how the program was implemented and developed. Through documents, interviews and data, this study creates a timeline during which the Total Person Program grew through increases in financial and human resources with a collaborative effort from campus and athletics, utilizing student-athlete Grade Point Averages (GPA) as a benchmark for success.

However, there is not a commensurate level of scholarship related to the effectiveness of these programs, nor is there an understanding of the lived experiences of the student-athlete participants that is grounded in research. Therefore, this qualitative study utilized Moustakas' (1994) Transcendental Phenomenology to explore the lived experiences and perceptions of college student-athletes who participated in leadership development programs provided by their athletic department. This study applied Dweck's (2008) theory of Mindset to distill the role effort, failure, and adversity played in the participants lives, and their leadership development. Textural and structural analysis of the data revealed six themes and the essence of the phenomenon. The themes were: (1) Personal Growth and Development; (2) Skill Development; (3) Engaging Pedagogies; (4) Meaning of Effort; (5) Meaning of Failure; and (6) Problem Solving Mindset. Recommendations for college athletic departments implementing leadership development programs include: Intentionality of design; focus on personal growth and development; provide tangible skill development; and include training on growth mindset.

In 1991, the NCAA created an optional program to further support the student-athletes: Challenging Athletes' Minds for Personal Success (CHAMPS/Life Skills Program). By creating this program, the NCAA admitted that student-athletes needed to be involved in other activities in addition to athletic competitions. The CHAMPS/Life Skills program was then introduced to all institutions across the country to provide additional support for their student-athletes. The purpose of this study is to provide a list of model practices in the following areas of student-athlete development programs: student-athlete leadership, career development, student-athlete engagement, community service, outreach, and student-athlete enhancement. It will also help other institutions that are falling short in helping their student-athletes by offering suggestions for improvement. To take it even a step further, this study will determine what impact the student-athlete development programs have on the lives of student-athletes after graduation. To achieve this, I conducted semi-structured interviews with eight student-athlete development professionals from Division I institutions. I used thematic coding to analyze the data. The analysis resulted in four domains: Model Practices, Student-Athlete Development Professional, Additional Support, and Student-Athlete Transition. Within the four domains are thirteen categories. I provide implications about model practices in student-athlete development and their importance in Division I intercollegiate athletics, the responsibility and skills necessary to be successful as a student-athlete development professional, and the step that student-athletes struggle with the most while transitioning into college and out of college.

However, there has been limited investigation into how the institutional logics (i.e. the belief structures and related practices) within an athletic department may affect the manner in which athletic administrators and coaches perceive and approach the development of their student-athletes. The purpose of this study was to understand the institutional logics of an NCAA Division II athletic department and how those logics may affect student-athletes. In order to address the purpose and research questions of this study, I conducted a qualitative case study at a private university where I interviewed thirteen members of the university including eight members of the athletic department and five university faculty members and administrators. Additional data were obtained through various documents such as the university's mission statement and the NCAA Division II Handbook. It was found that the athletic department operates under certain institutional logics wherein they are expected to foster student-athlete development. These include the academic, physical, social, and spiritual aspects of their development. Additionally, the athletic department is expected to enhance the university by building community and promoting the mission and vision of the university. Finally, winning athletic competitions is an important expectation of members of the athletic department. Further exploration of the data reveals that certain aspects of these logics may conflict. Primarily, the participants acknowledged that they were expected to foster the development of their athletes in other aspects beyond athletics; yet their primary job performance evaluations were based on wins and losses. Additionally, the logic of enhancing the university may also contend with the academic development of the student-athletes. This is significant because research has suggested that conflicting institutional logics within an organization may lead to confusion as to which logics are paramount. Though the specific findings of this research may be contextually bound, this provides insight into how the institutional logics of an organization may influence the actions of its members and key stakeholders who are influenced by the processes within that organization.

To achieve these goals, a multi-pronged effort addressed issues that in the past have contributed to the mediocre state of St. Georges’ Athletics and will now bring changes to improve the athletic program and academic supports for student athletes. As a result of the improvement effort, the athletics department established a shared program vision and mission, a common language about best practice in the program, better academic support procedures for athletes, and a proposal and plan to enhance the athletic stadium facility. A committed, consistent, and daily effort to communicate to all stakeholders became the norm. Research based strategies were employed to strengthen our understanding of conditions and outcomes in the interscholastic athletics program. The athletics department is now discussing next steps for more informed decision-making about increasing academic support for student athletes with goal of increased student achievement. This portfolio’s first two artifacts draw on literature and data analysis showingpositive relationships between student commitment, achievement measures, and participation in sports. Not only were the results informative and encouraging, this work greatly improved my knowledge of relevant literature and data analysis and has helped as I have undertaken efforts to be evidence-driven more generally in our interscholastic athletic program – a priority also reflected in other artifacts. Collectively, the artifacts in this portfolio illustrate my leadership journey. I explored and led practices that enhanced the athletic experience of our coaches, players, and parents. Plans will be adjusted and enhanced so we continue to move forward and improve the interscholastic experience for students.

This research study took place in the southeast region of the United States of America. Six collegiate basketball coaches were interviewed to understand how the values of their coaching philosophy influenced their decision making when leading a Division II basketball program within the guiding principles of the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Collegiate Model of Athletics. According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Collegiate Model of Athletics mandates that each of its associated members provide a balanced academic, social, and athletic student-athlete experience. Three streams of literature pertaining to coaching philosophy, competition, and mental toughness served as a foundation for the research study. Data were collected through observations, one-on-one interviews, focus group interviews, and artifact collection to understand participant perceptions regarding the purpose of the research study. Several findings emerged based on outcomes that developed from the central research question and three sub-research questions. These findings consisted of the following grounded theories: Basketball is a tool to teach life lessons, Support systems promote holistic student-athlete development, Negative influences hinder holistic student-athlete development, and Team culture creates guiding principles. An integrated grounded theory emerged in this research study based on the four grounded theories associated with each research question. The integrated grounded theory was, A holistic development coaching approach is needed to provide a balanced academic, social, and athletic student-athlete experience. This integrated grounded theory warranted implications for coaching practices which suggest that collegiate basketball coaches should view their coaching responsibility as a multifaceted leadership role focused on the holistic well-being and overall development of student-athletes. Recommendations that emerged from this research study include strategies for optimizing the academic, social, and athletic student-athlete experience through coaching practices, future research, and coaching policy.

Book excerpt: Collegiate student-athletes have a unique experience that is different in many ways from non-athlete students within the college environment. Student-athletes form a distinct subculture within the greater college culture (Shulman & Bowen, 2001). During the 2012-13 academic year, there were 463,202 student-athletes; however, less than 2% of all collegiate student-athletes will advance to the professional levels (NCAA, 2013 Sept.; NCAA, 2013 Oct.). This leaves the overwhelming majority of student-athletes with the task of transitioning to life beyond athletics, despite much time, mental and physical effort devoted to fostering an athletic identity. Due to the time and energy demands placed on elite college athletes (i.e., NCAA Division I student-athletes), they may have less opportunity to explore and develop alternative identities and career paths. The NCAA has several systems of support to foster student-athlete well-being; however, there appears to be a lack in recognition of the potential difficulty student-athletes may have in transitioning to life beyond collegiate athletics. There also appears to be a lack in discussion of how to best assist student-athletes in this transition upon completion of their collegiate athletic career. Seeking to provide a resource in an area that has not been sufficiently addressed, a program is proposed to assist student-athletes transition to life beyond athletics, entitled Success Through Athletics. Utilizing the format of a logic model (Savaya & Waysman, 2005), the current program incorporates knowledge of the unique experience of student-athletes, as well as literature on transitions and developmental theory specific to student-athletes, and is intended for implementation within an athletic department over the initial four years of a student-athletes collegiate career. The overarching structure of the four year Success Through Athletics program is as follows: (a) year one, goal development and encouragement of dualistic thinking; (b) year two, skills identification and movement toward multiplistic thinking; (c) year three, values identification and continued development of multiplistic thinking; and (d) year four, self-awareness and movement toward relativistic thinking.

Book excerpt: The study utilized the logic model evaluation to ascertain the effectiveness of the Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS) unit at a NCAA Division I research university located in the Western United States. The logic model evaluation provided a process to determine the extent to which the unit achieved its purpose and outcomes. The logic model evaluation can be tailored to the exact unit based on the short-term and long-term goals of the program. Based on the tenets of flexibility and adaptability, the logic model evaluation was selected as an appropriate tool for the study. Overall, the SAASS unit was perceived to be effective by its key constituent groups. The evaluation highlighted the importance of the athletic academic advisor in keeping students on track to graduation and communicating issues to administrators, coaches, and professors. Recommendations are provided to potentially improve the SAASS unit under study.
