This book was released on 1991 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A field-hardened, high-resolution, broadband millimeter wave (26.5 to 40 GHz) Frequency Modulated-Continuous Wave (FM-CW) radar employing real-time data acquisition and digital signal processing (DSP) techniques has been implemented for continuously acquiring and processing data for ice thickness profiling and studying surface scattering from freshwater lake and river ice sheets. Thickness resolution is better than 3 cm + and/or - 10%. System specifications include a 15 dBm output rf power level, a 0.066 second sweep rate and>50 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This radar is capable of operation from ground-mobile platforms and helicopters at heights of up to 7 m above ice surfaces at speeds up to 40 kph. Initial laboratory tests of the system have exhibited results that meet or exceed original design specifications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyses of a river's freezeup ice cover stability and its breakup rely on detailed knowledge of the cover's thickness and the variability of that thickness. A high-resolution, millimeter wave (26.5- to 40-GHz) Frequency Modulated-Continuous Wave radar with real-time data acquisition and digital signal processing and display capability was deployed from a low-flying (3-10 m) helicopter to continuously acquire, process and display data during an ice thickness profiling survey of a 24-km study reach. A nominal sheet ice thickness of 50 cm, occasional areas of new ice sheet as thin as 5 cm, open leads, and massive ice accumulations on the order of 5 m thick were encountered. Radar profiling data agreed with ground truth from borehole measurements of the sheet ice, and provided a more detailed view of the ice conditions than that obtained from a low altitude video survey. The radar system provided rapid, safe and accurate data acquisition, allowing detailed mapping of the ice conditions throughout the reach ... Airborne, High resolution radar, Millimeter waves, River ice, FM-CW radar, Ice profiling, Radar remote sensing.

Download or read book FM-CW Radar Remote Sensing of Hydrometeors written by L. P. Ligthart and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to investigate phenomena influencing co-polar attenuation and cross-polar discrimination along earth-space satellite paths and terrestrial radio links at frequencies above 10 GHz, the number density, geometry, and orientation of hydrometeors (rain, snow, hail, melting particles etc.) along the path have to be characterized. This paper describes the modelling of the melting process, the dielectric properties of melting particles, and fall velocity behavior of hydrometeors for Doppler velocity computation with vertically pointing radars. Attention is paid to backward scattering of ellipsoidal hydrometeors for radar polarimetry computations at arbitrary elevation angles, and to forward scattering of spherical hydrometeors for attenuation computations at high frequencies. The multi-parameter FM-CW radar systems of Delft University of Technology is able to measure the polarization properties and Doppler velocity spectra of hydrometeors with high resolution in range and reflectivity level. Preliminary results obtained with this radar system are shown, indicating the capabilities of combined Doppler- and polarimetry measurements for classification of hydrometers along a satellite path.

Book Synopsis Assessment of Marine Radars for the Detection of Ice and Icebergs by : Joseph Patrick Ryan
Download or read book Assessment of Marine Radars for the Detection of Ice and Icebergs written by Joseph Patrick Ryan and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a comprehensive field program undertaken in 1984 to assess the iceberg detection capability of existing marine-type radars. The semi-submersible Sedco 706 drilling platform on the Grand Banks was selected for the trials. It has four radar systems on board, two X-band and two S-band, plus low-noise receivers for increased sensitivity. During the data collection phase, recordings of radar video signals were made for various icebergs, ships, and drilling rigs. Raw video signals from each radar were digitized sequentially and stored on tape for subsequent analysis. Data collected have proven useful in identifying the effect of critical environmental conditions such as ducting and subrefraction, as well as providing valuable information on sea clutter.
