Book excerpt: Mexican immigrant women are a vulnerable population group in the U.S., and face challenges as a result of the nation’s anti-immigrant landscape. To help Mexican immigrant women cope with these realities, scholars have proposed the implementation of social support interventions. Yet only two studies have executed social support interventions for immigrant women. Those tailored specifically for Mexican immigrant women are nonexistent. To address this gap, this Master's thesis piloted the first social support intervention for Mexican immigrant women in the U.S. The purpose was to assess the impact of a social support intervention on the perceived social support for Mexican immigrant women. The study (1) surveyed Mexican immigrant women's current perceived social support, (2) investigated whether engaging in a social support intervention could improve Mexican immigrant women's perceived social support, and (3) explored (through the use of a foto novela) the elements (e.g., persons, places) Mexican immigrant women consider to be most important sources of social support in their lives. Surveys were administered pre- and post-intervention assessing perceived social support using three Likert-type scales. At pre-intervention, perceived social support was moderately high. A difference in perceived social support at post-intervention was observed, but without significance. This work adds to the small body of literature on social support interventions for Mexican immigrant women, and has important implications for future interventions and research. This work also documents the use of foto novelas – an innovative tool to engage with (and give a voice to) Mexican immigrant women. Future work should consider the use of foto novelas, as these amplify new understandings of social support, and capture (through the use of photographs) Mexican immigrant women’s own interpretation of social support.

Book excerpt: Background : Along the US-Mexico border persons who inject drugs (PWID) with a history of deportation from the US are at increased risk for HIV as compared to non-deported PWID. However, drivers and factors contributing to this elevated HIV risk among deported PWID are poorly understood. Aims : The aims of this dissertation were to: (1) to critically review evidence linking deportation and HIV risk in Mexico; (2) to identify the relationship between deportation and recent (i.e., past 6 months) police victimization experiences (e.g., physical violence, extortion) among PWID in Tijuana, Mexico; and (3) to describe the prevalence and correlates of depressive symptoms among deported PWID in Tijuana, Mexico. Methods : In Chapter 2, a critical review of evidence linking HIV risk and deportation was conducted using existing peer-reviewed research with deported migrants in Mexico. Chapter 3 and 4 draws from questionnaires collected among PWID (n = 733) participating in a longitudinal prospective cohort study in Tijuana. Chapter 3 examines the baseline questionnaires of 733 PWID. Chapter 4 draws on data collected among a subset sample of PWID with a history of deportation (n = 132). Results : Chapter 2 found that deported migrants in Mexico commonly display a higher prevalence of HIV risk behaviors and HIV infection, especially among males and PWID. Various environmental influences that migrants experience post-deportation that may elevate their risk for acquiring HIV infection are discussed. Chapter 3 found that 56% of PWID had experienced police victimization in the past 6-months; differential experiences with police between deported and non-deported PWID were documented. Factors related to being a migrant and a drug user were independently associated with recent police victimization. Chapter 4 found that 45% of PWID reported current symptoms of depression, which was associated with having been initially detained in the US for a crime-related reason before being deported and perceiving needing help with current drug use. Conclusion : HIV vulnerability among migrants who inject drugs is closely linked to their social and physical experience with their receiving environments post-deportation. Structural interventions targeting various social and structural environmental factors are warranted to reduce risks associated with HIV infection.

In the United States, education, outreach, and treatment for HIV/AIDS focuses on all groups as the virus transcends barriers of race and sexuality, but Latinos face significant issues related to culture and immigration status that require nuanced and informed approaches to gain the community's trust and deliver services. A critical approach to innovation can lead to the development of new programs and foster trust between the Latino community and nonprofit organizations.

Book excerpt: Ample research across the social sciences have unraveled the varying dimensions of state violence embedded in immigration enforcement policies, whether in the interior of the United States, detention centers, or at the U.S.-Mexico border wall. Political scientists have focused on the top-down politics of enforcement practices and the impacts on immigrant political behavior, health, and inclusion. Yet, often overlooked is the reality that borders are meant to be crossed. There are 50 land ports of entry along the Mexico-U.S. border through which thousands of individuals travel from Mexico to the U.S. on a regular, sometimes daily basis. At these ports of entry, the U.S. government amplifies the power of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers, who are given discretionary power to subjectively determine admissibility of border entrants. Additionally, some civil liberties do not fully apply at the border and racial profiling is a legalized enforcement practice. While scholars across the social sciences have examined the detrimental effects of infrequent, yet highly violent contact with immigration enforcement officers, what happens when such violence is a mundane part of everyday life in the Mexico-U.S. borderlands? What are the effects of normalized border violence on the livelihoods of individuals that depend on crossing the southern border? This dissertation explores the impacts of routine state violence at land ports of entry along the Mexico-U.S. border on the livelihoods of transborder commuters, who are residents of Mexican border cities but have legal documentation to regularly cross the border for work, education, commerce, and other activities. Transborder commuters are not immigrants in the traditional sense; they are a highly mobile population that includes U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and Mexican nationals with visas that depend on crossing the border for multiple reasons. Through three empirical papers, I analyze how routinized violence affects transborder commuters' mental health, their ability to file complaints after enduring mistreatment from CBP, and practices of citizenship. Although each paper focuses on a specific outcome, the findings reveal how the normalcy of violence at the border leads to minimization of suffering, stigma, and disenfranchisement from rights accessibility. Thus, the dissertation reveals that when violence is normalized through a carceral institution, there is an impossibility of democracy. The findings of the dissertation make contributions to migration and policing literatures by showing that the detrimental effects of border enforcement that go beyond targeted populations, such as undocumented immigrants and their families. Specifically, the consequences of state violence are also experienced by people that have documentation to enter the U.S. through land ports, including U.S. citizens. Additionally, the findings demonstrate the multi-dimensional ways violence is experienced and normalized by individuals who have regular contact with the state at the border. At the core, the dissertation strives to unravel how mundane policing leads to the silencing of suffering experienced by individuals who regularly cross the Mexico-U.S. border.
