Book excerpt: The Itcha-Ilgachuz Research Project was initiated in the west Chilcotin region of central British Columbia to test variants of group selection and irregular group shelterwood silvicultural systems for managing lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia) forests for timber and northern caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou Gmelin, northern ecotype) winter habitat. The results presented in this report are from three assessments that have been completed since the start of the mountain pine beetle outbreak, and are provided in context with the results from the earlier natural regeneration study. The results provide insight into how successfully the study sites and surrounding forests, which have sustained variable levels of mortality, regenerate naturally.--Includes text from document.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental project was established in 1957 at a site about 20 kilometres north-west of Nakusp, British Columbia, to study the effects of partial cutting on complex stands in the interior cedar-hemlock zone. This report presents results observed over the first 40 years of the experiment and updates the 15-year results reported by Thompson (1977). Results are presented for individual trees & the entire stand with regard to growth, mortality, and stand development in response to three partial cutting treatments: improvement cut, diameter-limit cut, and salvage cut.

Book excerpt: Over the past 15 years, selective cutting prescriptions have been applied by forest operations in southeastern British Columbia as part of a strategy to reduce landscape-level susceptibility to damage from mountain pine beetle outbreaks. The prescriptions have been applied in stands where maintenance of some mature forest cover is needed to meet management objectives for viewscapes, recreation and habitat or to hold some pine volume during periods of rising beetle activity until it is required or available for harvest. In this study, we examined 10 of these sites 5 to 14 years after harvest, and determined current stand composition and structure from direct sampling and pre- and post-treatment stand characteristics from stand reconstruction. We then related these characteristics to original treatment specifications; the volume removed during harvest and remaining on site after treatment; subsequent losses to wind, snow or bark beetle damage; current stocking status; radial growth rates of residual overstorey trees; and the nature of fuel complexes created and effects of treatment on potential fire behaviour.

Book excerpt: This report describes & presents results of a retrospective study carried out between 1992 and 1999 in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region of British Columbia to quantify the effects of trembling aspen competition on lodgepole pine performance, and to identify competition indices or other measures of competition that could be used by field staff. Target pine were selected across neighbourhoods in six stands with varying densities of aspen. Data pertaining to pine size & condition, and to the size & location of aspen within a 70-inch radius of the pine were collected three times. Measurements began when the stands were seven to 12 years old. Various approaches are used to identify levels of aspen abundance when pine performance declined below acceptable levels. These include analyses of regression & correlation, tests of existing competition indices, and visual & statistical characterization of trends. Finally, conservative recommendations are made for the retention of aspen within pine stands in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region.

Book excerpt: In this paper the authors characterize lodgepole pine regeneration and the related micro-site conditions across a range of disturbance scenarios associated with mountain pine beetle (MPB) infestation and wildfire; indentify limitations for the germination, servival, recruitment and growth of natural and artificial regeneration in relation to the effects of site moisture, fire severity, and competition by vegetation; and provide guidance on how to manage beetle-infested lodgepole pine stands subsequently burned by wildfires. The work includes information on materials and methods, results and discussion, the authors' conclusions, as well as recommendations.--Includes text from document.

Book excerpt: A series of research trials established in 1986-87 in the Kamloops Forest Region, British Columbia, studied the effectiveness of chemical and manual treatment methods for controlling competing vegetation, and also studied the impact that these brushing methods had on the range resource in the region. This report first describes the study methodology, including site selection, experimental design, measurements made, and statistical analyses. It then reports the results of the three studies in the series: the effects of brushing and grazing on lodgepole pine, the dry alder plant community, and range forage at the Devick Lake site; effects of brushing and grazing on lodgepole pine, the willow plant community, and range forage at the Ellis Creek site; and effects of brushing on lodgepole pine, the pinegrass plant community, and range forage at the Upper McKay Creek site.

This book was released on 1996 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a research trial established in 1986 in southern interior British Columbia to study the effectiveness of glyphosate applied at three and at six litres/hectare, and of manual cutting, to release naturally regenerated lodgepole pine seedlings and suppress dry alder complex. Pine seedlings and two target species, Sitka alder and fireweed, were assessed for the first three years and again in the ninth year following treatment. Measurements made on the seedlings included height, current-year height increment, and stem diameter at root collar. Target vegetation was assessed for species-specific percent cover and the height of one average target specimen per woody species was also measured.
