Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brazos River Alluvium Aquifer is a minor aquifer in central and east Texas under water table conditions. It is an underutilized resource and may be considered a supplemental water source. However, variability in salinity occurs throughout the Brazos River Alluvium Aquifer and the source of this variability is unclear. The objective of this study is to characterize the variability of salinity in the northern segment of the Brazos River Alluvium Aquifer and evaluate potential sources of elevated salinity. Three potential sources of elevated salinity were evaluated: Interactions between the aquifer and the river, concentration from irrigation, and brine contamination from historic oil and gas fields. Based on the ionic and isotopic composition of aquifer and river samples, in-situ water samples, core descriptions, batch leaching of sediment, and hydrographs, the Brazos River and historic oil and gas fields do not appear to be the source of elevated salinity for the aquifer; although, irrigation could impact aquifer salinity.

Book excerpt: This study investigates an abrupt groundwater salinization event in a localized aquifer system in North Central Texas. Salinization increases observed in this system are potentially related to petroleum production, agriculture/livestock activity or interaction with deeper groundwater. Analysis of hydrogeochemical data revealed unusual Ca-Mg-Cl waters with little HCO 3- or Na+ . Cl- proportion correlated directly with TDS. Leaching of soil samples revealed direct correlation between soils-derived-TDS and distance from nearest oil well. Resistivity measurements identified a shallow high-conductivity zone extending down-gradient from the well. Indications of conductive material were observed in the near surface (0-10m) in the 2D resistivity profile. Low NO 3- levels indicated that agriculture and livestock contributions to salinization are unlikely. Minimal SO42- and low Na+ /Cl- ratios suggest little contribution from evaporites. High TDS and low Na+ /Cl- ratios infer petroleum production activities as the likely contributor to groundwater quality reduction at this site. Whether these fluids arise from the oil production interval or from intervening brackish aquifers is still unknown.

Book excerpt: Texas water resources are under pressure due to population growth expected in the coming decades, increasing industrial demands, and frequent periods of drought. With this increasing demand for limited water resources it is important to explore alternative water sources within the State. One of those resources that can be developed is the many small aquifers which have never been well-characterized but could be an alternative source of fresh and brackish water for agriculture, municipal, and industrial applications. The natural gas industry's demand for water is growing in Texas as new drilling techniques such a hydraulic fracturing have opened new reserves previously considered economically non-viable. The development of smaller aquifers containing brackish water is a viable alternative to the gas industry's current reliance on fresh (potable) groundwater resources. The aquifer sections containing brackish water need to be mapped and characterized so they can be developed as an alternative water resource by the gas industry. The Barnett Shale in North-central Texas is one of the first major gas plays in the United States to use the technique of hydraulic fracturing in field development. This technique requires large quantities of water to create the required hydraulic pressure down the gas well to fracture the normally low permeability shale. A typical horizontal well completion consumes approximately 3.0 to 3.5 million gallons (11,400 to 13,200 m3) of fresh water. Projections of future groundwater demand for the Barnett Shale gas play total 417,000 AF (5.1x108 m3), an annual average of 22,000 AF (2.7x107 m3) over the expected 2007-2025 development phase. This level of water demand has the gas industry and groundwater managers exploring alternative sources of water for future development of the Barnett Shale. One alternative source of water for the expanding footprint of the Barnett Shale gas play are the smaller local Paleozoic aquifers on the western edge of the play. These small aquifers are underutilized and contain waters with higher levels of TDS. These levels are, however, acceptable to the drilling industry. In order to characterize theses aquifers, TWDB databases were utilized to analyze water chemistry and well productivity.

In 1990s researchers came to conclusion that the chemistry of the injected water can be important in improving oil recovery. The low salinity water injection (LoSalĀ® ) has become one of the promising topics in the oil industry. It is believed that the main mechanism for incremental oil recovery in low salinity flooding is wettability alteration. Several papers discussed that the wettability alteration from oil-wet to mixed- or water-wet takes place due to clay swelling and expanding of double layer in sandstones and calcite dissolution along with rock surface reactions in carbonates. However, there is no consensus on a single main mechanism for the low salinity effect on oil recovery. The main objective of this research is to conduct sensitivity analysis on main parameters in low salinity waterflooding and its hybrid processes affecting oil recovery in carbonates. We compare results by using coupled reservoir simulator UTCOMP-IPhreeqc. UTCOMP is the compositional reservoir simulator developed at the Center for Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering in The University of Texas at Austin. IPhreeqc is the module-based version of the PHREEQC geochemical package, a state-of-the-art geochemical package developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). We investigate the effect of low salinity water and carbon dioxide on oil recovery from carbonates by modeling the processes through the UTCOMP-IPhreeqc simulator. We perform sensitivity analysis on continuous gas injection (CGI), water-alternating-gas (WAG) flooding, and polymer-water-alternate-water (PWAG) flooding. We study the significance of reservoir parameters, such as reservoir heterogeneity (Dykstra-Parsons coefficient, Vdp, and crossflow, kv/kh), the salinity of injected water, the composition of gas, and polymer concentration in polymer-water solution on cumulative oil recovery. Moreover, we study the importance of inclusion of the hydrocarbon CO2 impact on the aqueous-rock geochemistry by comparing two scenarios where in one scenario the hydrocarbon CO2 effect is included in UTCOMP-IPhreeqc whereas in the other one the effect is neglected. Finally, we perform sensitivity analysis on PWAG flooding for most influential design parameters using Design of Expert software. The reservoir parameters, such as average reservoir permeability, reservoir heterogeneity, and crossflow and injected polymer-water solution parameters, such as polymer concentration and salinity of injected water are optimization parameters in this study.
