This book was released on 2015-12-03 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the power of educators to serve as HIV and AIDS prevention agents. The definitive text represents the work of a distinguished panel of teacher educators and health scientists who identify core information and skills effective educators of HIV and AIDS prevention should learn as they are prepared to attend to the academic and human needs of students. It assigns to teachers, in the US and abroad, the novel role of prevention agents, given their extraordinary ability to access and affect young people -- to influence their behavior. Humanizing Pedagogy considers the social, economic, racial, gender and other variables that impact the prevention of HIV and AIDS. The authors collectively assert that the process of preventing HIV and AIDS, when it considers historic and social context, can compel educators to serve not only as practitioners of knowledge, but as community agents of health and well being. Attending to HIV and AIDS issues advances the capacity and ability of educators to see and attend to the complete learner. Humanizing Pedagogy is a single volume resource for educators, in the US and abroad, interested in attending to the whole needs of the learner-and saving lives.

Book excerpt: In Africa, women are physiologically, socially and economically more vulnerable to the impacts of HIV/AIDS than men, many analysts now arguing that AIDS is a 'gender based disease'. This study explores the cultural practices in Namibia, and the gender aspects of these practices, which exacerbate the spread of HIV. It examines the increasing HIV rates within a wider context of gender analysis, and the impacts of HIV on women, particularly on those who do not have means of economic support; and suggests some gender-based responses to the pandemic.
Book Synopsis UNAM HIV/AIDS Policy by : André Du Pisani
Download or read book UNAM HIV/AIDS Policy written by André Du Pisani and published by University of Namibia Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Namibia ranks as one of the four countries most affected with HIV in the world, with a prevalence of around 20% amongst sexually active adults. In Namibia HIV/AIDS is now causing more deaths that TB and malaria combined; life expectancy has fallen from 61 in 1995 to 52 in 1998; by 2010 it is expected to be below 40. For a country with a population of only 1.7 million this situation represents a major threat to progress achieved since independence and to the future of the country - in economic, political, demographic, social, and human rights terms. The Univerity of Namibia recognises its role as engaging with and responsible towards a wider society, and as the principal agency in developing high calibre educated people on which the future of the country depends. In a renewed effort to respond adequately, it here outlines an HIV/AIDS policy committed to the management and mitigation of the disease at institutional and national levels. It aims to integrate HIV/AIDS into its core functions of teaching, research and community service, and to stress the importance of each member of the university constituency and the wider community for its implementation in entirety. A bibliography, and practical guidelines from the WHO on HIV testing, and dealing with blood spillages follow from the main body of the text.
Book Synopsis The Political Cost of AIDS in Africa by : Kondwani Chirambo
Download or read book The Political Cost of AIDS in Africa written by Kondwani Chirambo and published by Institute for Democracy in South Africa. This book was released on 2008 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Political Cost of AIDS in Africa provides comprehensive empirical evidence of the impact HIV/AIDS is having on politics and the electoral process. The latest publication to come out of an extensive study by Idasa and its research partners, this book reveals that the fledgling multi-party democracies in parts of the continent are being undermined by sickness, incapacity and premature deaths among elected leaders as well as within the electorate. The book suggests innovative and holistic responses to address these problems. A culmination of three years of exploratory studies by African researchers working under the auspices of Idasa, it demonstrates how AIDS is interwoven with the continent's ambitions for deepening democracy. With chapters on Namibia, Malawi, Tanzania, South Africa, Senegal and Zambia, this study investigates: the attrition among elected political leaders and the costs of replacing them; the loss of elected representatives, its effect on constituencies, and the power dynamics in parliamentary structures and in democratic governance; the failure to maintain voter registers and how it affects the credibility of electoral outcomes; the effect of stigma and discrimination on political participation.

Book Synopsis HIV/AIDS and the Security Sector in Africa by : Obijiofor Aginam
Download or read book HIV/AIDS and the Security Sector in Africa written by Obijiofor Aginam and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, communicable diseases have devastated armies and weakened the capacity of state institutions to perform core security functions. Today, the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa has prompted many of the affected countries to initiate policies aimed at addressing its impact on their armed forces, police, and prisons. This volume explores the dynamics of how the security sectors of selected African states have responded to the complex and multifaceted challenges of HIV/AIDS. Current and impending African HIV/AIDS policies address a range of security-related issues: * The role of peacekeepers in the spread or control of HIV * The dilemma of public health (the need to control HIV) versus human rights (protection against mandatory medical testing) needs * The gender dimensions of HIV in the armed forces * The impact of HIV on the police and prisons The chapters in HIV/AIDS and the Security Sector in Africa are written by African practitioners, including commissioned officers who are currently serving in the armed forces, medical officers and nurses working in the military, and African policy and academic experts. While the book does not comprehensively address all aspects of the impact of HIV/AIDS on the security sector, the contributors nonetheless highlight the potentials and limits of existing policies.
Book Synopsis Researching AIDS, Sexuality and Gender by : Nyokabi Kamau
Download or read book Researching AIDS, Sexuality and Gender written by Nyokabi Kamau and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current HIV and AIDS regime has opened up unknown vistas in intellectual pursuits and knowledge creation. One such newly opened up area of research is studying HIV and AIDS in relation to gender issues. However, owing to the devastating nature of the epidemic, most studies tend to focus on women merely as an "at risk" population leaving aside the wider sociological dimensions that pertain to women's sexuality in general, issues of AIDS related stigma and discrimination and how it impacts on women's careers as economic contributors to society. The uniqueness of the present study lies in the fact that it embodies the author's triangulated research into the tripartite dimensions of HIV and AIDS, women's sexuality, and gender-sociology, all against the backdrop of analysing actual experiences of career women in Kenyan universities.

Book Synopsis The Impact of HIV/AIDS on Education and Institutionalizing Preventive Education by : Roy A. Carr-Hill
Download or read book The Impact of HIV/AIDS on Education and Institutionalizing Preventive Education written by Roy A. Carr-Hill and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the impact of HIV/AIDS on education in sub-Saharan African countries. It looks at the situation at both macro and micro levels and emphasizes the need to react quickly and to institutionalize the response of education systems to the negative consequences of the pandemic. Drawing on studies of a few countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the first part of the book discusses the practicability of implementing a range of indicators for monitoring the impact of HIV/AIDS, specifically on the demand for supply, management, and quality of education at all levels. It underlines the difficulties of assessing and monitoring the impact on demand, supply, and quality in many of the worst affected countries in Africa. The second part focuses on the essential role that the education system has to play in preventing the expansion and mitigating the impact of the epidemic. A range of responses is developed, drawing on the experience of various national and international organizations. This part also presents an overview of the education system in several countries that have attempted programs to impart life skills to children and young people. It considers the problems of evaluating such programs in light of cost effectiveness. (Author/WFA).
