Book Synopsis The IMF and the Future by : Graham Bird
Download or read book The IMF and the Future written by Graham Bird and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Monetary Fund has been criticised from both the right and the left of the political spectrum with the right arguing that it is too interventionist and creates more problems than it solves and the left on occasion demanding that it be abolished altogether. What seems almost beyond question is that the IMF needs to be reformed. Defining a future role for the IMF will always be a controversial issue, but vital to any considerations will be a measured assessment of how it has operated in the past. This excellent new book from an internationally respected expert on the IMF intends to do just that. Starting with an historical background tracing the evolution of the IMF, the book goes on to cover such themes as: *The circumstances under which countries turn to the IMF *The various aspects of IMF conditionality *Institutional issues such as lending facilities and how the fund is resourced. Bringing together an array of articles, this excellent new book will undoubtedly be required reading for anyone with a serious interest in development studies as well as being an eye-opening read for policy makers involved with the IMF.
Book Synopsis Finance, Development, and the IMF by : James M. Boughton
Download or read book Finance, Development, and the IMF written by James M. Boughton and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2009-06-25 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to provide objective analysis of the role and effectiveness of multilaterals in general and the IMF and World Bank in particular. The IMF is a multilateral financial institution with a mandate to promote financial and macroeconomic stability, cooperative economic policies, and a balanced growth of international trade. More than two fifths of its 185 members are low-income countries and many others have substantial pockets of poverty in their populations. Since economic development and the reduction of poverty are the most important economic challenges that these countries face, how can the IMF best help them? How can the imperative of macroeconomic and financial stability be reconciled with the requirements for sustained economic growth? This volume brings together the research of leading economists, political scientists, and historians to suggest ways for the IMF to address these issues effectively.

Book Synopsis The IMF and Economic Development by : James Raymond Vreeland
Download or read book The IMF and Economic Development written by James Raymond Vreeland and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-03-03 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do governments turn to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and with what effects? This book argues that governments enter IMF programs for economic and political reasons, and finds that the effects are negative on economic growth and income distribution. By bringing in the IMF, governments gain political leverage - via conditionality - to push through unpopular policies. Note that if governments desiring conditions are more likely to participate, estimating program effects is not straightforward: one must control for the potentially unobserved political determinants of selection. This book addresses the selection problem using a dynamic bivariate version of the Heckman model analyzing cross-national time-series data. The main finding is that the negative effects of IMF programs on economic growth are mitigated for certain constituencies since programs also have distributional consequences. But IMF programs doubly hurt the least well off in society: they lower growth and shift the income distribution upward.

Book Synopsis IMF Programmes in Developing Countries by : Tony Killick
Download or read book IMF Programmes in Developing Countries written by Tony Killick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Monetary Fund is the centre of a global financial system that encourages budgetary discipline and full integration into world trade to facilitate development and alleviate poverty. Yet this policy 'conditionality' of the IMF is highly controversial. Critics state that fifty years of IMF existence has been 'fifty years too long', and that its doctrinaire policy must change or Fund programmes will have only limited ability to achieve their objectives. This book examines the arguments, tracing the extent of Fund adaptation, presenting major new evidence on the consequences of Fund programmes, and considering its future role.
Book Synopsis The Effect of International Monetary Fund and World Bank Programs on Poverty by : William Easterly
Download or read book The Effect of International Monetary Fund and World Bank Programs on Poverty written by William Easterly and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2001 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is some evidence that IMF and World Bank adjustment lending smooths consumption for the poor, reducing the rise in poverty for any given contraction of the economy but also reducing the fall in poverty for any given expansion. Adjustment lending plays a similar role as inequality, reducing poverty's sensitivity to the economy's aggregate growth rate.
Book Synopsis IMF Lending to Developing Countries by : Graham Bird
Download or read book IMF Lending to Developing Countries written by Graham Bird and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the linchpin of the global financial system, the International Monetary Fund provides the balance of payments support, chiefly to developing countries, conditional on strict remedial policy measures. Its approach to policy remains highly controversial, however. While the Fund claims it has adapted, critics allege its policies are harshly doctrinaire, imposing hardships on already poverty-stricken people. For the critics, the half century of its existence is `fifty years too long' and radical change is essential. This book examines the arguments, tracing the extent of Fund adaption, presenting major new evidence on the consequences of fund programes, and considering its future role.

Book Synopsis IMF-Supported Programs and Income Convergence in Low-Income Countries by : Tejesh Pradhan
Download or read book IMF-Supported Programs and Income Convergence in Low-Income Countries written by Tejesh Pradhan and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing the empirical debate on the effects of IMF-supported programs on participating countries’ macroeconomic performance, we focus on the issue of whether these programs accelerate conditional ß-convergence among low-income countries (LICs). We use an unbalanced panel dataset for 85 LICs over the period 1986-2015 and employ two different econometric methods to address the selection bias problem. Our empirical results suggest that the rate of conditional income per capita convergence is faster among LICs with extended IMF support than that in countries without support or with intermittent support.

This book was released on 2007-09-20 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March 2006, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the President of the World Bank commissioned the External Review Committee on IMF-World Bank Collaboration to look at the status of institutional collaboration and provide suggestions for improvement. The Committee’s report, released in February 2007, called for the strengthening of the culture of collaboration in the two institutions, and made a number of specific proposals in that direction. The Joint Management Action Plan (JMAP) was prepared against this background, and the actions agreed between Bank and Fund managements in the JMAP are scheduled to be presented in informal Board meetings in early October. The JMAP will be launched immediately after the Annual Meetings. The goal is for most new systems to be operational in time for the preparation of FY09 budgets.
