Book Synopsis North Africa, Revised Edition by : Phillip Naylor
Download or read book North Africa, Revised Edition written by Phillip Naylor and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2015-01-15 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Africa has been a vital crossroads throughout history, serving as a connection between Africa, Asia, and Europe. Paradoxically, however, the region's historical significance has been chronically underestimated. In a book that may lead scholars to reimagine the concept of Western civilization, incorporating the role North African peoples played in shaping "the West," Phillip Naylor describes a locale whose transcultural heritage serves as a crucial hinge, politically, economically, and socially. Ideal for novices and specialists alike, North Africa begins with an acknowledgment that defining this area has presented challenges throughout history. Naylor's survey encompasses the Paleolithic period and early Egyptian cultures, leading readers through the pharonic dynasties, the conflicts with Rome and Carthage, the rise of Islam, the growth of the Ottoman Empire, European incursions, and the postcolonial prospects for Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Western Sahara. Emphasizing the importance of encounters and interactions among civilizations, North Africa maps a prominent future for scholarship about this pivotal region. Now with a new afterword that surveys the “North African Spring” uprisings that roiled the region from 2011 to 2013, this is the most comprehensive history of North Africa to date, with accessible, in-depth chapters covering the pre-Islamic period through colonization and independence.

Book excerpt: This volume presents the first comprehensive examination of the legal issues surrounding international debt recovery on claims against Iraqi oil and gas. In addition to presenting a snapshot view of Iraq's outstanding debt obligations and an analysis of the significance of the theory of odious debt in the context of the Iraqi situation, the list of legal issues examined includes relevant provisions of the Iraqi Constitution of 2005, controlling Security Council resolutions, pertinent articles of the KRG oil and gas law (No. 22) of 2007 and the many nuanced and technical questions raised thereby, legal pronouncements aimed at protecting Iraqi oil and gas and those adopted in selected other nations, and general problems associated with recognition and enforcement of awards or judgments that may involve such oil and gas or revenues from the sale thereof. Also discussed are the lessons learned by the handling of the Iraq debt experience and the transferability of those lessons to future situations.
Book Synopsis Financial Regulation in Africa by : Dr Iwa Salami
Download or read book Financial Regulation in Africa written by Dr Iwa Salami and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the global financial crisis, there has been a worldwide search for alternative investment opportunities, away from advanced markets. The African continent is now one of the fastest-growing economic regions in the world and represents a viable destination for foreign direct and portfolio investment. This book, which is the first comprehensive analysis of financial integration and regulation in Africa, fills a huge gap in the literature on financial regulation and would constitute an invaluable source of information to policy makers, investors, researchers and students of financial regulation from an emerging and frontier markets perspective. It considers how financial integration can facilitate African financial markets to achieve their full potential and provides a comparative study with the EU framework for financial integration and regulation. It assesses the implementation of effective and regional domestic infrastructures and how these can be adapted to suit the African context. The book also provides an assessment of government policies towards the integration of financial regulation in keeping with the regional agenda of the African Union (AU) and the African Economic Community (AEC).

Download or read book Macroeconomic Issues in Small States and Implications for Fund Engagement written by International Monetary Fund. Strategy, Policy, & Review Department and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2013-02-20 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper reviews the macroeconomic characteristics and performance of small states and discusses ways in which the Fund’s engagement with these countries could be better tailored to meet their needs. The Fund previously examined small states issues in 2000, informed by a Joint Task Force Report of the Commonwealth Secretariat (CS) and World Bank. Small states continue to face many of the same challenges they did then, and the 2000 Small States Report remains the foundation for much of the work in this area, both inside and outside the Fund. However, the relative macroeconomic performance of small states has deteriorated since the late 1990s, and a fresh look is warranted.

Book Synopsis Annual Report on Exchange Arrangements and Exchange Restrictions 2008 by : International Monetary Fund. Monetary and Capital Markets Department
Download or read book Annual Report on Exchange Arrangements and Exchange Restrictions 2008 written by International Monetary Fund. Monetary and Capital Markets Department and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2008-10-09 with total page 1666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published since 1950, this authoritative, annual reference is based upon a unique IMF database that tracks exchange and trade arrangements for all 185 IMF member countries, along with Hong Kong SAR, Aruba, and the Netherlands Antilles. The Annual Report on Exchange Arrangements and Exchange Restrictions (AREAER) draws together information available to the IMF from a number of sources, including during official IMF staff visits to member countries. There is a separate chapter for each of the 187 countries included, and these are presented in a clear, easy-to-read tabular format. A summary table allows for simple cross-country comparisons of key features of their exchange and trade regimes. The report's introduction summarizes recent global trends and developments. It discusses such topical issues as exchange rate arrangements, current or capital transactions, or prudential regulations. The individual country chapters outline exchange measures in place, the structure and setting of exchange rates, arrangements for payments and receipts, procedures for resident and nonresident accounts, mechanisms for import and export payments and receipts, controls on capital transactions, and provisions specific to the financial sector. A separate section in each chapter lists changes made during 2007 and the first half of 2008. The report now provides more detailed information on the operations of foreign exchange markets and exchange rate mechanisms and better describes the regulatory framework for current and capital account transactions. A free demo of a searchable HTML version of the report will be available online.

Book Synopsis Evaluating the Impact of Non-Financial IMF Programs Using the Synthetic Control Method by : Ms.Monique Newiak
Download or read book Evaluating the Impact of Non-Financial IMF Programs Using the Synthetic Control Method written by Ms.Monique Newiak and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We use the Synthetic Control Method to study the effect of IMF advice on economic growth, inflation, and investment. The analysis exploits the existence of IMF programs that do not involve any financing (Policy Support Instruments, “PSIs”). This enables us to focus on the effects of IMF monitoring, advice, and approval (as opposed to direct financial assistance). In addition, countries with non-financial programs are typically not crisis-struck – thereby mitigating the reverse causality problem and facilitating the construction of counterfactuals. Results suggest that treated countries add about 1 percentage point in annual real GDP per capita growth, with inflation being lower by some 3 percentage points per year. While we do not find evidence for an impact on total investment and the resulting capital stock, PSI-treatment does seem to stimulate foreign direct investment.

Book Synopsis Senegal by : International Monetary Fund
Download or read book Senegal written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2008-07-02 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senegal’s staff report for the 2008 Article IV Consultation highlights the rapidly rising energy and food prices, and the high inflation in 2007 that put pressure on the fiscal and external accounts. Senegal’s macroeconomic policies were being pursued under an economic program supported by the IMF’s Policy Support Instrument (PSI), which was approved in November 2007. Executive Directors observed scope for improving the targeting of the existing measures while minimizing economic distortions so that they remained consistent with macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability.
