Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Masters of Landscape Painting As regards modern times, it is the scarcely enviable privilege of my age to have come in contact with most of the landscape painters who have been the glory of our nineteenth century school. Some of the details which I give concerning them, their careers and their ideas, I have had either from their own lips or from their friends and acquaintances. But to criticise impartially the artists of one's own day, one must not be too near them, and it is for this reason that this volume deals only with those who are no longer with us. With regard to the illustrations, I have endeavoured to give all the variety that my subject demanded. In addition to masterpieces consecrated by universal admiration, it has been my aim to reproduce many remarkable works which are less known, more particularly those now in America. I have added some facsimiles of original drawings by the masters, studies from nature or made in preparation for their pictures, and also some photographs of engravings, and lithographs of their works done by themselves or by other artists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape Painting and Modern Dutch Artists The same scene might be painted by Ruys dael and Hobbema, by Constable and Turner, by Daubigny and Rousseau, and each pic ture would take on the spirit of the individual artist, and give the observer very different ideas of identical views. For if it is not the actual scene before him that is painted, but his idea of it, it is evident that the personality of the artist counts for a very great deal in pictures; and so it is the subjective view of art that is the all-important one. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Picturesque Scenery: Or Studies of Nature Made in Travel, With to Improvement in Landscape Painting As many copies of a work having the present title, and printed a few years since for private circulation, were distributed to various institutions connected with art, it may appear to some, that the present volume is but a second edition of that book. This is, however, by no means the case; for, although the same plan has been adopted on the present occasion as previously, yet, with the exception of the part which refers to vegetation, there is scarcely a paragraph of the former work which has been retained unaltered, whilst the bulk of the materials which constitute the new one, are the result of subsequent observations and research. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape Painting It is to be regretted that the art of color printing has not yet reached a stage of development where it can be trusted with the reproduction of a mas terpiece of landscape, which often de pends for its beauty on color-tones and color-transitions of extreme delicacy. In the present volume it has been judged best to confine the reproduc tions to simple half-tones in black and white to give no color rather than color which is false and misleading; and the illustrations here included are therefore presented, not as adequate representations of the works them selves, but as hints and suggestions only of the qualities which give to those works their distinction and their beauty. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landscape in Art Before Claude and Salvator Several years ago, when engaged upon the work entitled Cadore, or Titian's Country, I had occasion to examine the landscape introduced more or less as background in the works of several Italian masters of the sixteenth century. My object was to ascertain how far the strange forms of the Dolomite mountains, constantly to be recognised in Titian's landscape, could be identified in that of contemporary painters. During this investigation I was Struck with the amount of landscape beauty which passed unnoticed amidst the imposing claims of great sacred subjects, or those of mythologic legend; I felt, too, that in these neglected corners of canvases, if the study of them were sufficiently wide and thorough, might be traced the rise and early progress of landscape-painting. Some years had passed when it was proposed to me to write something like a history of this delightful art. It was a task too large to undertake, but the suggestion drew my thoughts again to the germs of landscape spread through all mediaeval art. The more I looked into the subject, the more interesting it became, and it had also the fascination of a region hitherto unexplored, and retreating into a dim unknown. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of American Landscape Painting, 1800 to 1900: January 19 to February 25, 1938 Arace busy taming the wilderness, wresting a living from the sea, and building a new nation, had little time or surplus wealth for more than the bare necessities of life. The only art for which there was any demand in colonial America was portraiture. The provincial aristocrat had no desire for the higher forms of art, but he wanted himself and his family recorded for posterity. In the words of Benj amin Robert Hayden, disillusioned English exponent of the grand style: Portraiture is always independent of art and has little or nothing to do with it. It is one of the staple manufactures of the Empire. Wherever the British s'ettle, wherever they colonize, they carry, and will always carry, trial by jury, horse racing and portrait painting. Least of all was there any demand for landscape, a quite non-utilitarian form of art, which tells no story, illustrates no historical event, points no moral. The motivation of landscape is as impractical as that of lyric poetry or music - the expression of the artist's vision of nature and the emotions which it arouses in him. This love of nature is the product of an old and settled civilization, not a pioneer one. It had little place in the hard-headed America of colonial days.
