Toutefois, cette dernière catégorie fait l'objet d'une réflexion à part entière qui accorde une place relativement importante à l'interactivité, contrairement aux autres parties de la thèse. Les aimées étudiées sont les années 1980 et 1990, avec quelques incursions du cote des années 1960 et 1970. Enfin, la problématique est celle du réalisme. Le texte met l'accent sur la nécessité, de revenir à l'image en tant que telle, c'est-à- dire d'examiner ses éléments constitutifs comme on le ferait pour n'importe quelle production iconique. Démarche rejetée jusqu'à présent pour des raisons multiples tenant à des facteurs d'ordres différents apparus successivement. Par ailleurs, étudier les images de synthèse à la lumière du réalisme permet : - De combler un vide épistémologique, c'est-à-dire de rendre compte d'une production placée sous le signe de ce concept, en se demandant ce que véhiculent les images 3D sur le plan culturel d'abord et sur le plan idéologique ensuite. - De proposer une solution de rechange aux théories élaborées jusqu'à présent sur ces images, privilégiant la thèse de la rupture plutôt que celle de la continuité. - De poser les fondements d'une esthétique du numérique, en partant du principe que l'art informatique ne s'est pas développé à l'écart de la problématique du réalisme. Il reste un art très fortement marque par un contexte qui sème quelques doutes - Du point de vue purement théorique - sur ses possibilités d'existence. Les principaux auteurs mentionnes dans ce travail sont Roland Barthès, Marie- josé Baudinet-Mondzain, Jean Baudrillard, Quatemère de Quincy, Christian Metz, pour l'image en général, et Edmond Couchot, Régis Debray, Anne-Marie Duguet, Abraham Moles, Philippe Queau et Paul Virilio pour les nouvelles technologies en particulier.

Le but peut être considéré comme atteint lorsque un observateur ne peut plus faire la différence entre une simulation et une photographie de la scène simulée. Pour atteindre cet objectif, il est nécessaire d'effectuer des calculs complexes, aussi bien au niveau de la géométrie de la scène, de la simulation des matériaux, ou encore de l'interaction lumière matière. Toutefois, un élément est souvent oublié dans cette quête de réalisme : l'environnement d'observation. Cette simulation est en effet observée sur un dispositif de visualisation, par un observateur humain, placé dans un certain environnement. Or, chacune de ces trois composantes dispose de caractéristiques bien spécifiques qu'il peut être intéressant d'exploiter en synthèse d'images. C'est ce que nous nous proposons de faire à travers une métrique perceptuelle entre images développée pour correspondre à nos besoins. Cette métrique permet de comparer deux images en utilisant un modèle de vision qui simule le traitement effectué par le système visuel humain. Elle sera ensuite intégrée dans un algorithme de rendu progressif, afin de remplacer les critères empiriques de ce dernier par des critères perceptuels. Les temps de calculs obtenus sont pratiquement deux fois inférieurs à eux d'un calcul complet.
