Book excerpt: Pendleton, that virtually none of these temporal incoherences seem to have been noted before. Moreover, this study departs from the critical consensus that the earlier drafts of the novel are evidence of Fitzgerald's consummate artistry. Among the discoveries presented here are that Fitzgerald made no use of the 1922 calendar; that he did not work out the novel's time scheme until after completing about half of the manuscript version (possibly because he intended Gatsby to be much longer); and that, quite probably, he attempted to disguise at least some of the book's temporal misplacements and contradictions. Further, this study shows that even the most praised of Fitzgerald's revisions - his relocation of materials dealing with Gatsby's past so as to gradually reveal his secret - was apparently without exception accompanied by faulty temporal connections to the plot line.

Mrs. Emerson, widowed with seven adult children, lives alone in crumbling Victorian mansion outside Baltimore with only a collection of antique clocks to keep her company. Elizabeth Abbott—twenty-three years old, aimless, bohemian, and beautiful—leads a vagabond lifestyle until she happens upon Mrs. Emerson’s home and convinces the older woman to hire her as a handyman. When three of the strange, idiosyncratic Emerson children return to their childhood home for a visit, they are irresistibly drawn to Elizabeth.

Book excerpt: For sixteen-year-old Geth Montego, zero o’clock begins on March 11, 2020. By June, she wonders if it will ever end. “An insightful, eye-opening, and inventive story. C.J. Farley has penned a novel that sheds an important light on real issues facing young people today.” —Angie Thomas, author of The Hate U Give In early March 2020 in New Rochelle, New York, teenager Geth Montego is fumbling with the present and uncertain about her future. She only has three friends: her best friend Tovah, who’s been acting weird ever since they started applying to college; Diego, who she wants to ask to prom; and the K-pop band BTS, because the group always seems to be there for her when she needs them (at least in her head). She could use some help now. Geth’s small city becomes one of the first COVID-19 containment zones in the US. As her community is upended by the virus and stirred up by the growing Black Lives Matter protests, Geth faces a choice and a question: Is she willing to risk everything to fight for her beliefs? And if so, what exactly does she believe in? C.J. Farley captures a moment in spring 2020 no teenager will ever forget. It sucks watching the world fall apart. But sometimes you have to start from zero.

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book Rereading her childhood diaries, Heidi Julavits hoped to find incontrovertible proof that she was always destined to be a writer. Instead, they “revealed me to possess the mind of a phobic tax auditor.” Thus was born a desire to try again, to chronicle her daily life—now as a forty-something woman, wife, mother, and writer. A meditation on time and self, youth and aging, friendship and romance, faith and fate, and art and ambition, in The Folded Clock one of the most gifted prose stylists in American letters explodes the typically confessional diary form with her trademark humor, honesty, and searing intelligence.

Searching through her father's old papers Jane stumbles across a name she has never heard before. Book excerpt: American lawyer Katie Talbot is on the trail of the treasures that were looted from her ancestral home on the island of Rgen by two brothers, who were agents of the secret police in the days of the former East Germany. Detlef Weber is also on the trail of the brothers, as they murdered his father. The paths of Katie and Detlef criss-cross as they each pursue their quest, but both get caught up in the rise of a new far-right political party in Germany that is threatening the stability of Europe. It all comes to a climax in Weimar, the center of so much culture and political history. Author Ian Laurence has done a masterful job here, weaving well-developed characters into an imaginative plot that builds interest chapter after chapter. He successfully connects his fiction to history, adding enough factual details to make the story believable without overwhelming it. In addition, Laurence knows when to drop in critical foreshadowing to keep readers guessing. It is sure to please fans of suspense novels who appreciate thought-provoking history skilfully cross-connected with a credible and vivid story line. - Blueink Review Laurence keeps readers guessing about the outcome until the very end. A whirlwind trip around the globe, a little glamour, and a lot of intrigue. - ForeWord Reviews (Clarion Review) Winding Back The Clock is fast moving and energetic, full of plots and counter-plots. The author has obviously done his research, and the historical information is clearly presented, although sometimes too didactically. The interplay of the different characters, with their different motivations, is well drawn, and the villains are downright chilling. - IndieReader
