Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now includes a bonus excerpt from Meg Cabot's new Heather Wells novel, Size 12 and Ready to Rock, available wherever books are sold July 10. Heather Wells Rocks! Or, at least, she did. That was before she left the pop-idol life behind after she gained a dress size or two—and lost a boyfriend, a recording contract, and her life savings (when Mom took the money and ran off to Argentina). Now that the glamour and glory days of endless mall appearances are in the past, Heather's perfectly happy with her new size 12 shape (the average for the American woman!) and her new job as an assistant dorm director at one of New York's top colleges. That is, until the dead body of a female student from Heather's residence hall is discovered at the bottom of an elevator shaft. The cops and the college president are ready to chalk the death off as an accident, the result of reckless youthful mischief. But Heather knows teenage girls . . . and girls do not elevator surf. Yet no one wants to listen—not the police, her colleagues, or the P.I. who owns the brownstone where she lives—even when more students start turning up dead in equally ordinary and subtly sinister ways. So Heather makes the decision to take on yet another new career: as spunky girl detective! But her new job comes with few benefits, no cheering crowds, and lots of liabilities, some of them potentially fatal. And nothing ticks off a killer more than a portly ex-pop star who's sticking her nose where it doesn't belong . . .

Book excerpt: Like hysteria, anorexia is a fin de siècle pathology which fascinates and has reached epidemic proportions at the turn of the millennium. Parallel to the development of the phenomenon, an important body of experiential texts has revealed its presence in various parts of the world. While the medical discourse is still struggling with this conundrum, literature gives way to different interpretations by revealing the interconnectedness between writing and starving. Both signifying practices are experiences of the limit where fluxes of particles - food, words - are in constant interaction. Unlike most contemporary readings of anorexia, this book offers an original insight into the creative process inherent to the pathology, which the author calls Writing Size Zero. Body of writing and writing of the body, as found in western and post-colonial texts, delineate an in-between space producing new epistemologies. Through a close reading of the semiotics of self-starvation, the author debunks the myth of anorexia as a mental disease of the West and insists on the variety of expressions and figurations inherent to the pathology. By providing a meaning to self-starvation, writing gives anorexia its ethics.

Book excerpt: "A somber, disturbing mystery fused with a scathing look at the fashion industry. Mangin writes in a confident, razor-edged style." - Kirkus Reviews Condom dresses and space helmets have debuted on fashion runways. A dead body becomes the trend when a coat made of human skin saunters down fashion’s biggest stage. The body is identified as Annabelle Leigh, the teenager who famously disappeared over a decade ago from her boyfriend’s New York City mansion. This new evidence casts suspicion back on the former boyfriend, Cecil LeClaire. Now a monk, he is forced to return to his dark and absurd childhood home to clear his name. He teams up with Ava Germaine, a renegade ex-model. And together, they investigate the depraved and lawless modeling industry behind Cecil’s family fortune. They find erotic canes, pet rats living in crystal castles, and dresses made of crushed butterfly wings. But Cecil finds more truth in the luxury goods than in the people themselves. Everyone he meets seems to be wearing a person-suit. Terrified of showing their true selves, the glitterati put on flamboyant public personas to make money and friends. Can Cecil find truth in a world built on lies? In high fashion modeling, selling bodies is organized crime.

She considers what makes us strong, and how we can develop resilience in the world through knowing ourselves from within, and knowing our roots. She considers the nature of family and friendship too, and how a mother's role changes over time. Food, fashion, beauty - 'the eyes of the heart' - and the creative arts are all explored, along with honest reflections on the challenges and uncertainties of life, and how we maintain hope and faith in the face of loss. Ultimately, she asks how, as we get older, we can change our world for the better, for those who follow in our footsteps. What Matters is the perfect bedside book to read for solace and inspiration - and the ideal gift for someone important in your life.

Book excerpt: DescriptionThis compelling and poignant memoir tells about the journey through the disease of Anorexia, the recovery process, and all that comes with it-the hurt, hope and humor. After almost dying from the disease, and being neglected by the doctors, the author sought recovery and spent seven weeks at an inpatient facility. In her powerful story, she digs into the depths of Anorexia and describes how her simple diet and exercise program turned into a horrific eating disorder-one that controlled her life and forced her to go to the gym every day for four hours and reduce her diet to only fruit. After almost suffering from a heart attack and amazed that she was still alive, she knew she had to save herself and get treatment. Today, she is a survivor. By telling her story of the disease and recovery process, she not only educates the reader about eating disorders, but also shares with them a secret world unknown to many, and most importantly, that there is hope and recovery is possible. About the AuthorNicole Roberge was born in 1982 and lives in Connecticut. As a writer, she has been published in The Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone, ELLEgirl, The Hartford Courant, Diverse Education, Her Sports, Gotham Baseball, Hear/Say, Songwriter Universe, SHE Caribbean, and writes a weekly humor-dating column for Online Dating Magazine. Book excerpt: Bingeing, compulsive eating, food addiction, emotional overeating—no matter what you call it, too many women wrestle day to day with what they eat. It’s a love-hate relationship that always seems to be spiraling out of control. Food: The Good Girl’s Drug is one recovered binge eater’s attempt to inject some sanity back into the discussion about food, body image, and overeating. Sunny Sea Gold started fighting binge eating disorder in her early teens. But books on the topic were often aimed at housewives with kids and a white picket fence, women she had a hard time relating to. What about the girls who found themselves using all their roommate’s peanut butter, nibbling from the work refrigerator, or hiding a stash of chocolate from boyfriends, and were too ashamed to say anything? Calling on top mental health professionals, nutritionists, and fitness experts, Sunny offers real advice to a new generation fighting an age-old war. With humor and compassion, Food: The Good Girl’s Drug is about experiences shared by so many women—whether they’ve been struggling for years, or have recently admitted to themselves that, yes, it’s more than just a bad habit.

Solve a case with Terrorist Intelligence Bureau Agent Alex Cara in Spiral, take on the past with Dr. Sofia Battista and Laura Amalfi in Letters to the Grave and Struck, and laugh at the humorous stories told from the Toronto suburbs in WTF? Tales from the Burbs. Reader Views reviews: Spiral will be enjoyable to all readers who like international terrorism intrigue. Lucia Cascioli has mastered a complex plot, edge-of-your-seat thriller. Spiral is definitely worth reading, a four star in my book. WTF? Tales from the Burbs by Lucia Cascioli is a fun read! Letters to the Grave is both sobering and fascinating. This is definitely a book that will hold your attention, and have you reflecting upon it after you finish.
