Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AISB91 is the eighth conference organized by the Society for the Study of Artificial Intelligence and Simulation of Behaviour. It is not only the oldest regular conference in Europe on AI - which spawned the ECAI conferences in 1982 - but it is also the conference that has a tradition for focusing on research as opposed to applications. The 1991 edition of the conference was no different in this respect. On the contrary, research, and particularly newly emerging research dir ections such as knowledge level expert systems research, neural networks and emergent functionality in autonomous agents, was strongly emphasised. The conference was organized around the following sessions: dis tributed intelligent agents, situatedness and emergence in autonomous agents, new modes of reasoning, the knowledge level perspective, and theorem proving and machine learning. Each of these sessions is discussed below in more detail. DISTRIBUTED INTELLIGENT AGENTS Research in distributed AI is concerned with the problem of how multiple agents and societies of agents can be organized to co-operate and collectively solve a problem. The first paper by Chakravarty (MIT) focuses on the problem of evolving agents in the context of Minsky's society of mind theory. It addesses the question of how new agents can be formed by transforming existing ones and illustrates the theory with an example from game playing. Smieja (GMD, Germany) focuses on the problem of organizing networks of agents which consist internally of neural networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1981, this was the first textbook on programming in the Prolog language and is still the definitive introductory text on Prolog. Though many Prolog textbooks have been published since, this one has withstood the test of time because of its comprehensiveness, tutorial approach, and emphasis on general programming applications. Prolog has continued to attract a great deal of interest in the computer science community, and has turned out to be a basis for an important new generation of programming languages and systems for Artificial Intelligence. Since the previous edition of Programming in Prolog, the language has been standardised by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and this book has been updated accordingly. The authors have also introduced some new material, clarified some explanations, corrected a number of minor errors, and removed appendices about Prolog systems that are now obsolete.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book covers all aspects of immune-mediated diseases of the muscle and nerve, which are a group of complex diseases, whose diagnosis needs a team of specialists in the field of neuropathology, immunopathology, neurology, and rheumatology. Nerve and muscle biopsy evaluation is invaluable in distinguishing immune-mediated from etiologies and therefore, despite being invasive, pathological evaluation of nerve and muscle has stood the test of time. Chapters cover all the essential aspects of each disease entity viz. the pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnostic armamentarium, and guidelines for diagnosis and management. It is supplemented with full-colorful illustrations and photomicrographs for better comprehension. It includes a chapter highlighting the current progress in the field of immune-mediated myopathies and neuropathies as it is a rapidly evolving field with the addition of many new entities. This clinically oriented book serves as a primer for general histopathologists as well as a practice guide for neuropathologists. It is also relevant for neurologists and rheumatologists and encourages young medical students, residents, and research scholars in the field of neuropathology, neurology, and rheumatology to get involved in active research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction to this volume by Anders Holmberg provides a reflection on movement in the light of recent developments in Minimalist theory. His discussion of the theories of category versus feature movement in terms of displacement and copying, provides the background for 12 papers dealing with clitics, pronouns and movement in variety of language families. Articles on Romance include papers on the genitive clitic in Andean Spanish, proclitic groups and word order in Caribbean Spanish, overt pronouns and empty categories in Brazilian Portuguese, the clitic en in Catalan, and clitic doubling in Romanian. Papers on Germanic discuss movement of verbal complements in Dutch and German, analyses of English finite auxiliaries in syntax and phonology, and complementizers in dialects of German in a reiterative syntax analysis. Other articles deal with object shift in Serbo-Croatian, operator-bound clitics in Niuean, a serial verb analysis of the ba construction in Mandarin Chinese, and experiencer verbs in Japanese.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with diverse applications of holographic interferome try in experimental solid mechanics. Holographic interferometry has experienced a development of twenty years. It has enjoyed success and suffered some disappointments mainly due to early overestimation of its potential. At present, development of holo graphic interferometry is progressing primarily as a technique for quantita tive measurements. This is what motivated us to write this book - to ana lyze the quantitative methods of holographic interferometry. The fringe patterns obtained in holographic interferometry are graphi cally descriptive. In the general case, however, because they contain infor mation on the total vectors of displacement for points on the surface of a stressed body, the interpretation of these interferograms is much more complicated than in typical conventional interferometry. In addition, the high sensitivity of the method imposes new requirements on the loading of the objects under study. New approaches to designing loading fixtures are needed in many cases to ensure the desired loading conditions. The wealth of information obtained in holographic interferometry necessitates the use of modern computational mathematics. Therefore, practical implementation of the various methods of holographic interferometry must overcome sub stantial difficulties requiring adequate knowledge in diverse areas of science such as coherent optics, laser technology, mechanics, and applied mathe matics. Experimental methods play a significant role in solid mechanics.
