Hewitson Although the first volume of the "Exotic Butterflies," which is now brought to a close, has not succeeded in a pecuniary point of view, we do not hesitate to proceed with a second having abundant materials with which to fill its pages - willing to consider any loss which we may sustain as a slight contribution towards the advancement of our favourite science, and unwilling that the many beautiful things which have delighted our own eyes should not also be enjoyed by our brother naturalists. Two hundred and seventeen butterflies have been figured as new and distinct species, and I believe they will stand the test of close examination. No one can deprecate more than I do the needless multiplication of species in which some of the naturalists (especially ornithologists) of the present day, both in France and England, seem to take so much pleasure, who, with the knowledge always before them that certain species vary ad infinitum, that others are cosmopolitan in their range, nevertheless take some extra spot of colour, aided by some slight geographical separation, as sufficient ground upon which to erect a species. I have, however, learned to give great deference to the opinion of any one who may be closely studying some particular group, having myself come to a decision with regard to some of the Ithomias, which I have afterwards reversed upon nearer acquaintance with them, wondering at my own want of acumen; indeed, so intimate have I become with specimens in my own cabinet, as to know them from others of the same species, when there was no appreciable difference. Mr. Wollaston has aptly compared the progress we make in the study of Natural History, to our approach to some mountain range, which, though undefined at first, reveals unexpected beauties as the eye becomes trained to see them. With regard to two or three species, it may be thought that I have allowed too much scope for variation, but with the exception of the two Ithomias figured at 66 and 67, which it would have been perhaps as well to separate, I have no reason to change my opinion. Hewitson The author's sole object in the production of this work has been to leave behind him correct pictorial representations of the exquisite things which have been to him a joy through life. He believes that there is nothing higher or more worthy of his ambition than the simple child-like study of the works of his and their Creator. He believes each species in itself perfect and as it first came from the hands of the Creator; and if he could believe in the transmutation of species or that there was one grain of truth in the chaotic jumble of Mr. Darwin, his life-long pleasure and occupation would be taken from him. He has himself experienced so much pleasure in identifying from a good figure any species which descriptions have failed to elucidate, that, encouraged by his own experience and the kind aid of his friend, Mr. Wilson Saunders, who bears half the loss sustained in its publication, he is induced to proceed with a third volume. At the commencement of this work, ten years ago, the study of the Diurnal Lepidoptera had been so much neglected that our collections were crowded with undescribed species; except in England, where the "Genera of Diurnal Lepidoptera" had just been brought to a conclusion, scarcely anything had been done of late years towards their illustration. Since then much has been done. Dr. Boisduval has described the butterflies of California; M. Lucas several species in the "Revue et Magasin de Zoologie;" Dr. Felder has described and figured numerous species; M. Menetries has published a Catalogue of the Lepidoptera in the Imperial Museum of St. Petersburg; Horsfield and Moore have described and illustrated the Butterflies in the collection of the East Lidia Museum; 412 new species (with 790 figures) have been given in this work, and yet numbers of species (not less than 500) remain unnamed. Mr. Wallace is still exploring the New Guinea group of islands, and abundant materials arc accumulated from which to select illustrations for our third volume. Anterior wing crossed obliquely from the middle of the costal margin by a narrow band of white: a spot and two lines within the cell, the end of the cell, a transverse curved band at the middle touching the white band, two undulated submarginal bands, and the outer margin, black. three minute white dots near the apex. Posterior wing with a spot at the base, two transverse undulated bands before the middle, two submarginal bands (the inner band zig-zag) and the margin, all black; two large black ocelli each with white pupil and ray of lilac dots: the iris yellow, margined with black. Female differs little from the male, except in colour; it is much paler on the underside; the bands also which cross the anterior wing approximate more closely at the inner margin. Expan. 3 in. Hab. Menado. In the Collections of W.W. Saunders and W.C. Hewitson. Near to C.Stomphax of Westwood. The butterfly, which Mr. Westwood has placed in this genus under the name of C. Busiris, has little resemblance to the other species. He has, it is true, put it into a subgenus, and pointed out some of its divergencies, but, besides these, it has others; the eyes are more prominent, and the body much longer. Would it not be better placed with the Nymphalidse, and if not in the genus Iaera at no great distance from it."
