Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Steps of John Bunyan: An Excursion Into Puritan England It would be as logical to transform Joan Of Arc into a hospital almoner or police-court probation Officer. Puritan preacher or Catholic saint, the prophetic Child Of nature speaks a different language from that Of the earnest educator and the trained social worker. A few critics have gone to the other extreme, for the great will always have their detractors among the small. Inspired by a com prehensible reaction against the moralists, they have endeavoured to present John Bunyan as a species Of village idiot. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This sermon, although very short, is peculiarly interesting: how it was preserved we are not told; but it bears strong marks of having been published from notes taken by one of the hearers. There is no proof that any memorandum or notes of this sermon was found in the autograph of the preacher. In the list of Bunyan's works published by Chas. Doe, at the end of the 'Heavenly Footman,' March 1690, it stands No. 44. He professes to give the title-page, word for word, as it was first printed, It is, 'Mr. John Bunyan's last sermon, at London, preached at Mr. Gamman's meeting-house, near Whitechapel, August 19th, 1688, upon John 1:13: showing a resemblance between a natural and a spiritual birth; and how every man and woman may try themselves, and know whether they are born again or not.' Published 1689, in about one sheet in 12mo. From this it appears to have been preached only two days before his fatal illness, and twelve days before his decease, which took place August 31st, 1688. The disease which terminated his invaluable life, was brought on by a journey to Reading on horseback, undertaken with the benevolent design of reconciling an offended father to his son. Having accomplished his object, he rode to London; on his way home, through a heavy rain, the effects of which appeared soon after this, his last sermon was preached. He bore, with most exemplary patience and resignation, the fever which invaded his body; and, at a distance from his wife and family, in the house of his friend Mr. Strudwick, at Snow Hill, his pilgrimage was ended, and he fell asleep in perfect peace, to awake amidst the harmonies and glory of the celestial city. Book excerpt: According to the Bible what are good works? How should they function in a Christian’s life? In this booklet, John Bunyan addresses these and related issues in detail. Citing Titus 3:7-8, he summarizes its message: “they which have believed in God should be careful to maintain good works.” Bunyan goes on to point out several aspects of good works that all believers should know and apply. First, recognize that good works flow from faith and not the other way around. Second, be careful to insure that the works one does are actually good—here Bunyan describes the duties of Christians in the family and other relationships. Third, do not be satisfied with simply a commendable beginning, but continue faithfully in a life of good works. Lastly, Bunyan urges Christians to understand and believe in the doctrine of justification by grace—as a powerful motivation for doing good works.

Book excerpt: John Bunyans The Barren Fig Tree; or The Doom and Downfall of the Fruitless Professor (1688) is an exposition of Luke 13:6-9, concerning a barren fig-tree and a man. A professor planted a fig tree in his vineyard, but it bore no fruits for three years. Now the professor is doomed and cursed to death. Bunyan goes through the parable word by word, explicating its metaphors and their relevance to the life of the modern sinner.

Book excerpt: Objectives, Obstacles, and Tactics in Practice is the first book that compiles practical approaches of the best practices from a range of practitioners on the subject of working with Stanislavski's "objectives," "obstacles," and "tactics." The book offers instructors and directors a variety of tools from leading acting teachers, who bring their own individual perspectives to the challenge of working with Stanislavski's principles for today's actors, in one volume. Each essay addresses its own theoretical and practical approach and offers concrete instructions for implementing new explorations both in the classroom and in the rehearsal studio. An excellent resource for acting and directing instructors at the university level, directing and theatre pedagogy students, high school/secondary theatre teachers, and community theatre leaders, Objectives, Obstacles, and Tactics in Practice serves as a resource for lesson planning and exploration, and provides an encyclopedia of the best practices in the field today.
