Book excerpt: How Americans adapted European royal illuminations for patriotic celebrations, spectacular expositions, and intensely bright commercial lighting to create the world's most dazzling and glamorous cities. Illuminated fêtes and civic celebrations began in Renaissance Italy and spread through the courts of Europe. Their fireworks, torches, lamps, and special effects glorified the monarch, marked the birth of a prince, or celebrated military victory. Nineteenth-century Americans rejected such monarchial pomp and adapted spectacular lighting to their democratic, commercial culture. In American Illuminations, David Nye explains how they experimented with gas and electric light to create illuminated cityscapes far brighter and more dynamic than those of Europe, and how these illuminations became symbols of modernity and the conquest of nature. Americans used gaslight and electricity in parades, expositions, advertising, elections, and political spectacles. In the 1880s, cities erected powerful arc lights on towers to create artificial moonlight. By the 1890s they adopted more intensive, commercial lighting that defined distinct zones of light and glamorized the city's White Ways, skyscrapers, bridges, department stores, theaters, and dance halls. Poor and blighted areas disappeared into the shadows. American illuminations also became integral parts of national political campaigns, presidential inaugurations, and victory celebrations after the Spanish-American War and World War I.

Book excerpt: The author explains how May 16th, 1999 changed her life forever. She experienced the loss of two high school seniors and that evening the call came through to tell her that her son, in Colorado, had also been killed. Her first born, with his bigger than life personality was gone. The words surreal and gut wrenching were her constant companions. Exactly six months later, her Mom had one heart pain, went into a coma and died. She had frequently told her, Mary when the last leaf is gone from that tree, I will be leaving. She gave her the gift of time to emotionally survive her son s death. Mary shares with you the recorded messages she has received for over a decade from her family, on the other side, to give you hope. Through her experiences, you will know that unconditional love and connection continue to exist when you believe in the possibility. Our loved ones do not disappear into the cosmos after their death. Their energy remains around us forever. You can reconnect with your loved ones, as she has, and achieve peace and assurance that, as her son has repeatedly told her, Mom, all is as it should be.

Book excerpt: Your voices as much as any others are 'voices of the universe, ' and you need to start thinking of yourselves that way. That is how God spoke of the need for this book. As the energy in every single one of our thoughts, feelings, words and actions flows out, by natural law it affects us all. That energy we are sending attracts similar energy in the universe and pulls more of its kind back to us. Individually, we literally are creating our own lives in every moment and simultaneously, collectively, we are creating our world. And it doesn't end here. The energy we continuously are generating affects in kind the mass consciousness of the entire universe, thus it is impacting our space brothers and sisters. No wonder so many of them are eager to help us bring light to Earth! Interviews with a reptilian fleet commander and a representative of an eighth density spiritual civilization - Direct communication with God - Life architects - God's view of world politics - Some of our voices - Telepathic communication guidelines - Illuminati - NESARA - Synchronicity - Unique connections - Dementia - Lightworkers - Ascended masters - ETs on Earth

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to the life and work of Hildegard. • Reveals the life and teachings of one of the greatest female artists and intellectuals of the Western Mystical Tradition. • Contains 24 full-color illustrations by Hildegard of Bingen. • Includes commentary by Matthew Fox, author of Original Blessing (250,000 sold). Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was an extraordinary woman living in the Rhineland valley during most of the twelfth century. Besides being the abbess of a large and influential Benedictine abbey, she was a prominent preacher, healer, scientist, and artist. She also was a composer and theologian, writing nine books on theology, medicine, science, and physiology, as well as 70 poems and an opera. At the age of 42, she began to have visions; these were captured as 36 illuminations--24 of which are recorded in this book along with her commentaries on them. She also wrote a text describing these visions entitled Scivias (Know the Ways), now published as Hildegard of Bingen's Mystical Visions. Author Matthew Fox has stated, "If Hildegard had been a man, she would be well known as one of the greatest artists and intellectuals the world has ever seen." It is a credit to the power of the women's movement and our times that this towering genius of Western thought is being rediscovered in her full grandeur and autonomy. Virtually unknown for more than 800 years in Western history, Hildegard was featured as one of the women in Judy Chicago's Dinner Party in the early 1980s and published for the first time in English by Bear & Company in 1982. In addition to her mystical teachings, Hildegard's music has been performed and recorded for a new and growing audience.
