Book excerpt: The criminal underworld meets the spiritual otherworld in this thrilling debut collaboration between the inspiration for television's The Ghost Whisperer and an award-winning writer/director. Anza O'Malley is in most ways a typical single mom. She lives a happy, busy life with her five-year-old son in Cambridge, Massachusetts, juggling the joys and challenges of life as a doting parent and a freelance bookbinder. But there is more to Anza than meets the "ungifted" eye: she can see and speak with ghosts. Although she's been solving cold cases for the police for years, Anza has been hoping to focus her energies on her son and her bookbinding career. But when an exquisite and priceless illuminated manuscript is stolen from the Boston Athenaeum, and when its desecration spurs the appearance of some very unhappy spirits, Anza can neither look nor walk away. With an unlikely trio of ghosts by her side–a charming butler and two medieval monks–Anza leads us on an urgent journey through Boston's winding, cobbled streets to uncover a trail of deceit, danger, and ghoulish intrigue.

Book excerpt: What makes the Book of Illumination stand out among other philosophical and or religious titles is its precision to math, definition, and it's deciphering of prophecy. There truly is no book like it, as it combines every major religion, history, prophecy, pop culture, as well as the occult, into one comprehensive record. It also, with the use of Kabbalah and sacred geometry, animates the lives of past mythological deities, and composites their lives with "stars" that are living today. The revelation given within the Book of Illumination is in direct alignment with New Age prophecy as well as the resurrection spoken of by Jesus. This resurrection is validated by Hinduism, the world's oldest religion, which is also the largest religion in the world that openly acknowledges and promotes reincarnation. Reincarnation, after reading the Book of Illumination, becomes fully realized. It is no longer a matter of theory, as again, the book proves with mathematics and sacred geometry, the existences of ancient celestial beings of folklore and mythology, who walk the earth today in the flesh.

Book excerpt: Spectacular Illumination: Neon Los Angeles, 1925-1965 is a spectacular collection of vintage photography that showcases the glowing neon heritage of the City of Angels. More than 200 images fill its pages. L.A. has long been recognized as the most vibrant city in America, and part of its radiance comes from streets lined with neon signs during the Golden Age of neon from 1925 to 1965. Photographer and historian Tom Zimmerman shows images that depict, in both color and in black-and-white, what Raymond Chandler, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and countless other writers have tried to put into words. Spectacular Illumination tells a story of a city that has glowed, now glows, and, thanks to institutions such as the Museum of Neon Art, will glow forever. Author Tom Zimmerman is a native of Los Angeles and shares a birthday with the city. His prose has been published in Southern California Quarterly, California History, and Los Angeles Times Magazine. His photography has appeared in many magazines and newspapers, as well as in several books on Los Angeles history and architecture. Tom Zimmerman is often called upon to photograph significant buildings for permanent historic recordation. A catalog of his dramatic photographic series Neon Noir was published by the Museum of Neon Art, where it was first exhibited. His photos have been exhibited across the country and are in several permanent collections including the Library of Congress, California State Library, and the Los Angeles Public Library. Three books of his photographs have been published: A Day in the Season of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Wednesday at the Pier, and Downtown in Detail. He has also written three historical books. Light and Illusion: The Hollywood Portraits of Ray Jones; Paradise Promoted: The Selling of Los Angeles 1870-1930; and El Camino Real: Highway 101 and the Route of the Daylight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Ecstasty, a novel of a girl who triumphed against impossible odds to become the most extraordinary woman of the Middle Ages. Hildegard von Bingen—Benedictine abbess, healer, composer, saint—experienced mystic visions from a very young age. Offered by her noble family to the Church at the age of eight, she lived for years in forced silence. But through the study of books and herbs, through music and the kinship of her sisters, Hildegard found her way from a life of submission to a calling that celebrated the divine glories all around us. In this brilliantly researched and insightful novel, Mary Sharratt offers a deeply moving portrait of a woman willing to risk everything for what she believed, a triumphant exploration of the life she might well have lived. “Sharratt brings one of the most famous and enigmatic women of the Middle Ages to vibrant life in this tour de force, which will captivate the reader from the very first page.” —Sharon Kay Penman, New York Times–bestselling author of The Land Beyond the Sea “One could not anticipate this majesty and drama…Illuminations is riveting, following von Bingen through…to emerge as one of the significant voices of the 12th century…Unforgettable.” —January Magazine “Gripping…Like Ann Patchett’s Bel Canto, [Illuminations] is primarily about relationships forged under pressure.”—Publishers Weekly “Masterful.”—Saint Paul Pioneer Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before printing, books were written with reed pens using black ink and Arabic letters on papers that were polished with ahar (Mixture made with cornstarch and egg white for polishing the paper) and mühre (a device made of glass, used to make paper smooth and shiny). Important ones were written in “beautiful writing” (Hüsn-i Hat) and embellished with illuminations, marblings, engravings and miniatures. The books prepared in such artistic ways were generally given to Padishahs, lady sultans, and notable people of the time and were dedicated to libraries founded by those who are interested in books. Manuscript libraries that contain the old waqf libraries are today centres of illumination examples. However, it is not that easy for people who would like to see the examples of specific time or illuminator since a catalogue system has not been made yet. It is often not allowed to get pictures from manuscripts (because it will give damage to the books). Therefore, students are not able to see as many examples as they like or they need. Illumination is the name given to the embellishments, which are made with paints and gold, of manuscript books. Consequently, the art of illumination started to disappear as printing came into our country. School of Calligraphers (Medresetü’l-Hattatîn) which was set up in 1914 put the arts of manuscript books into action again. The aim of this book is to constitute a collection of precious examples chosen from unique manuscripts for the learners of illumination. All photos in the book were taken at Suleymaniye Library. In order to reach this goal, the text is meant to be short and examples are chosen from the works most of which have copying dates listed and they are chosen especially from the Seljuk, Beylik and Ottoman periods. Collection name of the book from which the example is taken and its recording number, name of the book and writer if any, outer measure, copying date, page number, name of its illuminator or miniature house if known and appropriate short information about it are written under the pictures. We hope this album of Turkish Illumination Art in which we tried to give as many examples as possible, will be beneficial especially for students. The book also offers techniques and space for practising.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents techniques to render photo-realistic images by programming the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). We discuss effects such as mirror reflections, refractions, caustics, diffuse or glossy indirect illumination, radiosity, single or multiple scattering in participating media, tone reproduction, glow, and depth of field. The book targets game developers, graphics programmers, and also students with some basic understanding of computer graphics algorithms, rendering APIs like Direct3D or OpenGL, and shader programming. In order to make the book self-contained, the most important concepts of local illumination and global illumination rendering, graphics hardware, and Direct3D/HLSL programming are reviewed in the first chapters. After these introductory chapters we warm up with simple methods including shadow and environment mapping, then we move on toward advanced concepts aiming at global illumination rendering. Since it would have been impossible to give a rigorous review of all approaches proposed in this field, we go into the details of just a few methods solving each particular global illumination effect. However, a short discussion of the state of the art and links to the bibliography are also provided to refer the interested reader to techniques that are not detailed in this book. The implementation of the selected methods is also presented in HLSL, and we discuss their observed performance, merits, and disadvantages. In the last chapter, we also review how these techniques can be integrated in an advanced game engine and present case studies of their exploitation in games. Having gone through this book, the reader will have an overview of the state of the art, will be able to apply and improve these techniques, and most importantly, will be capable of developing brand new GPU algorithms. Table of Contents: Global Illumintation Rendering / Local Illumination Rendering Pipeline of GPUs / Programming and Controlling GPUs / Simple Improvements of the Local Illumination Model / Ray Casting on the GPU / Specular Effects with Rasterization / Diffuse and Glossy Indirect Illumination / Pre-computation Aided Global Illumination / Participating Media Rendering / Fake Global Illumination / Postprocessing Effects / Integrating GI Effects in Games and Virtual Reality Systems / Bibliography
