Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions to Iconic Investigations deal with linguistic or literary aspects of language. While some studies analyze the cognitive structures of language, others pay close attention to the sounds of spoken language and the visual characteristics of written language. In addition this volume also contains studies of media types such as music and visual images that are integrated into the overall project to deepen the understanding of iconicity – the creation of meaning by way of similarity relations. Iconicity is a fundamental but relatively unexplored part of signification in language and other media types. During the last decades, the study of iconicity has emerged as a vital research area with far-reaching interdisciplinary scope and the volume should be of interest for students and researchers interested in scholarly fields such as semiotics, cognitive linguistics, conceptual metaphor studies, poetry, intermediality, and multimodality.

Book excerpt: This volume explores how Sardinians and Sardinia have been portrayed in Italian cinema from the beginning of the 20th century until now, starting from the examination of Sardinian tropes in a wide range of texts – travel writing, fictional sources, essays and academic works. The purpose is to shed light on the cultural construction of the Sardinian character and to reveal the ideology that is behind this process. Hence the volume challenges topics such as the dynamics between verbal and visual imagery, and the intertwining between discourse, images and audience. It addresses the following questions: how was the Sardinian character translated from texts into films? Which strategies were developed to define Sardinian images on screen? For whom were these images intended? Which ideology lies behind the images? Focusing on cultural images within film and literature, this volume is of interest to those working in imagology, comparative, cultural and Italian studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian cinema is internationally well-known for the ground-breaking experience of Neo-Realism, comedy "Italian-Style," Spaghetti Westerns, and the horror movies of the seventies. However, what is rather unfamiliar to wider audiences is Italian cinema's crucial and enduring affair with literature. In fact, since the very beginning, literature has deeply influenced how Italian cinema has defined itself and grown. This book provides an empirical approach to this complex and fruitful relationship. The aim is to present discussions dealing with significant Italian film adaptations from literary materials which greatly exemplify the variety of styles, view-points, and attitudes produced by such an alliance, throughout the different periods. Among the adaptations discussed, are those that have followed trends and critical debates, making them, at times, rather problematic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This book offers a range of perspectives on Elizabeth Gaskell and adaptation. The contributors – Alan Shelston, Raffaella Antinucci, Thomas Recchio, Brenda McKay, Katherine Byrne, Patricia Marchesi, Marcia Marchesi and Loredana Salis – discuss the afterlives of Gaskell’s fiction, from the author as adaptor of her own work to the role of the BBC in re-inventing Gaskell’s narratives. Loredana Salis is to be congratulated for bringing together a collection that tackles the remediation of Gaskell’s fiction from Gaskell’s own time to the 21st century, enabling her to join those authors, most prominently, Shakespeare, Austen and Dickens, who have received full-length book studies on adaptations of their work. The collection, as a whole, seems to confirm the notion that since the inception of film, the number of adaptations of an author’s work equates to the writer’s canonical status. No doubt, this book will prompt many more investigations into the adaptability of Elizabeth Gaskell’s fiction.” – Deborah Cartmell, De Montfort University, Leicester

The volume offers an in-depth exploration of the entanglements of film, theatre, literature, TV, the Internet, etc., within the framework of transmediality and their influence on the practice of translating humour. Chapters focus on the complex web of interrelationships shaped by and shaping the process(es) of transformation and adaptation that take place across media and across languages and cultures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies comprises contemporary texts by key authors and artists who are active in the emerging field of remix studies. As an organic international movement, remix culture originated in the popular music culture of the 1970s, and has since grown into a rich cultural activity encompassing numerous forms of media. The act of recombining pre-existing material brings up pressing questions of authenticity, reception, authorship, copyright, and the techno-politics of media activism. This book approaches remix studies from various angles, including sections on history, aesthetics, ethics, politics, and practice, and presents theoretical chapters alongside case studies of remix projects. The Routledge Companion to Remix Studies is a valuable resource for both researchers and remix practitioners, as well as a teaching tool for instructors using remix practices in the classroom.

This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
