Book Synopsis De Mulieribus Claris by : Giovanni Boccaccio
Download or read book De Mulieribus Claris written by Giovanni Boccaccio and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the composition of the Decameron, and under the influence of Petrarch's humanism, Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375) devoted the last decades of his life to compiling encyclopedic works in Latin. Among them is Famous Women, the first collection of biographies in Western literature devoted exclusively to women. The 106 women whose life stories make up this volume range from the exemplary to the notorious, from historical and mythological figures to Renaissance contemporaries. In the hands of a master storyteller, these brief biographies afford a fascinating glimpse of a moment in history when medieval attitudes toward women were beginning to give way to more modern views of their potential. Famous Women, which Boccaccio continued to revise and expand until the end of his life, became one of the most popular works in the last age of the manuscript book, and had a signal influence on many literary works, including Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and Castiglione's Courtier. This edition presents the first English translation based on the autograph manuscript of the Latin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 2012, scholars from a number of disciplines and countries gathered in Stockholm to discuss the representation of ancient mythology in Renaissance Europe. This symposium was an opportunity for the participants to cross disciplinary borders and to problematize a well-researched field. The aim was to move beyond a view of mythology as mere propaganda in order to promote an understanding of ancient tales and fables as contemporary means to explain and comprehend the Early Modern world. Book Synopsis Christine de Pizan and the Moral Defence of Women by : Rosalind Brown-Grant
Download or read book Christine de Pizan and the Moral Defence of Women written by Rosalind Brown-Grant and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-18 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christine de Pizan's Livre de la Cité des Dames (1405) is justly renowned for its full-scale assault on the misogynist stereotypes which dominated the culture of the Middle Ages. Rosalind Brown-Grant locates the Cité in the context of Christine's defence of women as it developed over a number of years and through a range of different texts. Arguing that Christine tailored her critique of misogyny according to the genre in which she was writing and the audience she was addressing, this study shows that Christine's case for women nonetheless had an underlying unity in its insistence on the moral, if not the social, equality of the sexes. Whilst Christine may not have been a radical in modern feminist terms, she was able to draw upon the cultural resources of her day in order to construct an intellectual authority for herself that challenged the prevailing orthodoxy of the day.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study compares Lemaire's treatment of the Trojan legend in his three-volume Les Illustrations de Gaule et singularitez de Troye (1511-1513) to this sources as well as to medieval French and Latin versions of the legend that he wished to correct. It also examines Lemaire's moral and political objectives in writing the work, as well as his view of history. It demonstrates that Lemaire reinterprets the past by offering complementary yet widely divergent moral lessons to his female and male readers while he attempts to influence the future by promoting European unity and a crusade against the Turks.
