Book excerpt: An experimental study of the ignition of liquid fuels injected transverse to a hot supersonic (M=1.65) air stream was conducted. The liquids considered were kerosene, CS2 and water as an inert control. The major variables were: air stagnation temperature in the range 1500 to 2300 F, injectant flow rate and injection angles from 90 to 45 deg upstream. The experimental observations were: temperature measurements on the wall near the injector and in the flow downstream of injection, self-luminosity photographs and infrared photographs taken with a Thermographic camera. Special attention was directed at the behavior of the liquid layer that had previously been found to form near the injector. No unequivocal evidence of ignition of either fuel was found for normal injection at these conditions. However, clear evidence of ignition of CS2 was found for the upstream injection angle for T sub o> or = 2030 F and 80

This book was released on 1982 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental studies of the penetration, break-up and atomization of transverse liquid and slurry jets were performed. All tests were with an air cross flow at Mach 3.0 with Po = 4 atm. and To = 300 deg K. The processes studied were: (1) the effects of injectant viscosity and surface tension, (2) the performance of an impinging jet injector and (3) the effects of particle loading for a slurry jet with 3-50 micrometer particles. The diffractively scattered light method was employed at these high-density, supersonic conditions to study droplet sizes. The major results are, (1) mean droplet size is approximately 10 microns for injectors of 0.05 in., (2) it has an inverse relation with jet/free stream dynamic pressure ratio, (3) it has a direct relation with orifice diameter, (4) it decreases downstream, (5) transverse variation has no simple pattern and (6) droplet size increases with viscosity.

This book was released on 1975 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents the first results of a study aimed at delineating the processes leading to ignition of liquid fuel jets injected transverse to a hot supersonic air stream. The tests were conducted at Mach 1.8 with a nominal stagnation pressure of 100 psia and stagnation temperatures from 500-1800 F. Kerosene, CS2 and water were used as the injectants. The observations were in the form of direct, top-view photos, temperature measurements and top-view, infrared Thermographic photos to produce isotherm patterns. Attention was directed, in particular, at the surface layer formed on the wall near the injection port. (Author).

This book was released on 1974 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation has been made of the sustained combustion of transversely injected fuel jets in an enclosed Mach 2 air-stream. Hydrogen, methane and kerosene were employed as fuels. High-enthalpy test-air was supplied from a pebble-bed regenerative heat exchanger through a Mach 2 two-dimensional nozzle. The stagnation temperature of the test-air could be varied within wide limits, but for the studies reported here, had a maximum value of about 1800K. The favorable flame stabilization effect of the obstruction caused by a fuel jet injected transversely into the supersonic stream has been demonstrated. Two non-dimensional quantities have been proposed and have been shown to effectively describe the fluid dynamic effects associated with the flame stabilisation process. The two proposed non-dimensional quantities have been used in studying the effect of the interaction between the pilot and the main fuel injection configurations. (Modified author abstract).
Book Synopsis Ignition and Combustion of Liquid Hydrocarbon Fuels in Supersonic Flow by : Simon Slutsky
Download or read book Ignition and Combustion of Liquid Hydrocarbon Fuels in Supersonic Flow written by Simon Slutsky and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study was carried out to investigate the combustion of a liquid hydrocarbon (hexane) injected into a supersonic stream. Injection modes included wall and central injection configurations. Extremely rapid and intense heat release phenomena were obtained. It was concluded that this mode of combustion could be made to compete with that of pure gas phase combustion for many technological applications. A preliminary theoretical model of the combustion mechanism was constructed which accounts for many of the observed phenomena, and which explains the very rapid combustion characteristics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion of Liquid Fuel Sprays outlines the fundamentals of the combustion of sprays in a unified way which may be applied to any technological application. The book begins with a discussion of the general nature of spray combustion, the sources of liquid fuels used in spray combustion, biomass sources of liquid fuels, and the nature and properties of fuel oils. Subsequent chapters focus on the properties of sprays, the atomization of liquid fuels, and the theoretical modeling of the behavior of a spray flame in a combustion chamber. The nature and control of pollutants from spray combustion, the formation of deposits in oil-fired systems, and the combustion of sprays in furnaces and engines are elucidated as well. The text is intended for students undertaking courses or research in fuel, combustion, and energy studies.

Book Synopsis High Speed Ignition and Combustion Characteristics of Storable Fuels Using a Hot Gas Pilot Igniter by : Stephen N. Schmotolocha
Download or read book High Speed Ignition and Combustion Characteristics of Storable Fuels Using a Hot Gas Pilot Igniter written by Stephen N. Schmotolocha and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents the results of a study on the ignition and combustion characteristics of high density storable fuels injected into supersonic and subsonic air streams. The fuels include liquid n-hexane, Shelldyne-H, and magnesium/hexane slurry and a boron/magnesium/hexane slurry. The subsonic and supersonic tests were performed in the same constant area combustor using a pebble bed heater and a vitiated heater, respectively. Autoignition and hot gas piloting were studied over a range of airstream total temperatures from ambient (300K) to 1950K. The results include definition of ignition and stable flame limits and pilot effectiveness parameters. Further evidence of staged ignition and combustion of the metallized slurries was obtained. In addition, a comparison between existing subsonic premixed combustion data and the present diffusion flame results is presented. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the XXth International Astronautical Congress compiles selected papers presented at the 20th International Astronautical Congress held in Mar del Plata, Argentina in 1969. This book is divided into five main topics—spacecraft engineering, astrodynamics, astrionics, bioastronautics, and problems of education. In these topics, this compilation specifically discusses the equatorial vibrations of a long flexible boom on a spin-stabilized satellite of non-zero radius; heat transfer to linear bodies in two-dimensional hypersonic low density; and limits of accuracy of general perturbations for satellites moving under constant forces. The rapid optimization of multiple-burn rocket flights; data transmission for planetary studies; and comparison of theoretical and experimental attitude data for the DODGE spacecraft are also elaborated. This text also covers the Apollo life-support and protective systems; bioastronautical aspects of Apollo biomedical operations; and development and applications of hot water rockets. This publication is recommended for astrophysicists and scientists of other disciplines related to astronomy.
Book Synopsis Pilot Gas Generator Ignition of Liquid Storable Fuels in a High Speed Air Stream by : Raymond B. Edelman
Download or read book Pilot Gas Generator Ignition of Liquid Storable Fuels in a High Speed Air Stream written by Raymond B. Edelman and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was performed to determine some of the combustion and flow characteristics associated with piloted ignition of liquid hydrocarbons injected directly into a supersonic air stream. Experiments were performed in a direct connect constant area combustor supplied by a Mach 2 air stream at a static pressure level of 1 atmosphere and at total temperatures ranging from ambient (530 R) to approximately 3300 R. The fuel was liquid hexane and was injected laterally into the flow through piloted and non-piloted injector configurations. Measurements include penetrations, combustor wall static pressure distributions and property profiles at two axial stations downstream of the injection point. It was found that autoignition and stable combustion occurs for total temperatures above about 2600 R. For temperatures below this limit minimum piloting requirements were established and it was found that the pilot mass flows needed for sustained combustion were small compared to the main fuel and air flow rates. Comparison with available theory indicates combustion efficiencies greater than 90% were obtaained. (Author).
