Book excerpt: Though in the preface the author notes scholarly references by French and German writers that he consulted, much of the material comes from "information acquired at first hand in the country". The book does not discuss the Young Turk Revolution to any great extent, but rather the challenges facing the reformers as they attempt to implement a number of changes, including balancing the demands of minorities/secessionist areas, secularizing the government, international relations, finances, women's rights, national defense, the Baghdad railway, etc. Aflalo does not refrain from making judgments of the people he discusses, particularly the deposed sultan and conservative forces within the country. He also compares the country often to Meiji Japan, both in describing why Turkey's reform era is different and in which lessons to draw from that nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An irresistible invitation to reject the work ethic and enjoy life's simple pleasures (such as laughing, drinking and lying in the open air), Robert Louis Stevenson's witty and seminal essay on the joys of idleness is accompanied here by his writings on, among other things, growing old, visiting unpleasant places and the overwhelming experience of falling in love. Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves - and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives - and destroyed them. Now Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization and helped make us who we are
Book Synopsis The Idler's Glossary by : Joshua Glenn
Download or read book The Idler's Glossary written by Joshua Glenn and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dawdler. "Layabout. Shit-heel. Loser. For as long as mankind has had to work for a living, which is to say ever since the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, people who work have disparaged those who prefer not to. This glossary, which closely examines the etymology and history of hundreds of idler-specific terms and phrases (whether pejorative, positive, or simply descriptive), aims not merely to correct popular misconceptions about idling, but to serve as a preliminary foundation for a new mode of thinking about working and not-working. It is intended to be specifically useful for journalists, who will never again have any excuse for describing an indolent person as languid, Epicurean behaviour as dissipated, or an idler as a slacker. Mark Kingwell's introduction offers a thoughtful but playful defence of the idler as the highest form of life, enlisting support from literary and philosophical sources (Aristotle, Kierkegaard, Russell, Bataille) as well as making some key distinctions: leisure vs. 'leisure time'; idler vs. slacker; not doing vs. failing to do. Kingwell also makes note of some lurking problems, such as the Idler's Conundrum, whereby dedicated idling succumbs to a form of work ethic, and Positional Goods Creep (per Veblen), whereby idling becomes a shorthand for social status and wealth. The Idler's Glossary is destined to become the Devil's Dictionary for the idling classes, necessary reading for any and all who wish to introduce more truly free time into daily lives.

Book Synopsis Heavenly Clockwork by : Joseph Needham
Download or read book Heavenly Clockwork written by Joseph Needham and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1986-09-18 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reissue with a foreword and supplement, of a modern classic published in 1960. The invention of the mechanical clock was one of the most important turning points in the history of science and technology. This study revealed six centuries of mechanical clockwork preceding the first mechanical escapement clocks of the West of about AD 1300. Detailed and fully illustrated accounts of elaborate Chinese clocks are accompanied by a discussion of the social context of the Chinese inventions and an assessment of their possible transmission to medieval Europe. For this revised edition, Dr Joseph Needham has contributed a new foreword on recent research and perceptions. In a supplement John H. Combridge details a modern reconstruction of Su Sung's timekeeping device, which together with textual studies modifies our understanding of this important early technology.
