Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The threat of domestic terrorism today looms larger than ever. Bombings at the World Trade Center and Oklahoma City's Federal Building, as well as nerve gas attacks in Japan, have made it tragically obvious that American civilians must be ready for terrorist attacks. What do we need to know to help emergency and medical personnel prepare for these attacks? Chemical and Biological Terrorism identifies the R&D efforts needed to implement recommendations in key areas: pre-incident intelligence, detection and identification of chemical and biological agents, protective clothing and equipment, early recognition that a population has been covertly exposed to a pathogen, mass casualty decontamination and triage, use of vaccines and pharmaceuticals, and the psychological effects of terror. Specific objectives for computer software development are also identified. The book addresses the differences between a biological and chemical attack, the distinct challenges to the military and civilian medical communities, and other broader issues. This book will be of critical interest to anyone involved in civilian preparedness for terrorist attack: planners, administrators, responders, medical professionals, public health and emergency personnel, and technology designers and engineers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Warfare Agents, Second Edition has been totally revised since the successful first edition and expanded to about three times the length, with many new chapters and much more in-depth consideration of all the topics. The chapters have been written by distinguished international experts in various aspects of chemical warfare agents and edited by an experienced team to produce a clear review of the field. The book now contains a wealth of material on the mechanisms of action of the major chemical warfare agents, including the nerve agent cyclosarin, formally considered to be of secondary importance, as well as ricin and abrin. Chemical Warfare Agents, Second Edition discusses the physico-chemical properties of chemical warfare agents, their dispersion and fate in the environment, their toxicology and management of their effects on humans, decontamination and protective equipment. New chapters cover the experience gained after the use of sarin to attack travellers on the Tokyo subway and how to deal with the outcome of the deployment of riot control agents such as CS gas. This book provides a comprehensive review of chemical warfare agents, assessing all available evidence regarding the medical, technical and legal aspects of their use. It is an invaluable reference work for physicians, public health planners, regulators and any other professionals involved in this field. Review of the First Edition: "What more appropriate time for a title of this scope than in the post 9/11 era? ...a timely, scholarly, and well-written volume which offers much information of immense current and...future benefit." —VETERINARY AND HUMAN TOXICOLOGY

Book excerpt: Since Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Gulf War veterans have expressed concerns about health effects that could be associated with their deployment and service during the war. Although similar concerns were raised after other military operations, the Gulf War deployment focused national attention on the potential, but uncertain, relationship between the presence of chemical and biological (CB) agents and other harmful agents in theater and health symptoms reported by military personnel. Strategies to Protect the Health of Deployed U.S. Forces which is one of the four two-year studies, examines the detection and tracking of exposures of deployed personnel to multiple harmful agents.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ratification of the Chemical Weapons Convention by more than 165 States Parties has reduced the risk of chemical warfare agent use, but there still remains a concern that other parties may make use of these weapons against civilian or military targets. Concerns within the defense and homeland security communities over possible terrorist use as well as the requirements for a verifiable Chemical Weapons Convention have driven the development of analytical methods such as liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) for the detection and identification of chemical warfare agents. This paper provides a general overview of chemical warfare agents and analytical methods for their analysis, a focused review of LC-MS applications, a summary of in-house LC-MS methods developed at DRDC Suffield, and a comprehensive bibliography of analytical open literature papers dealing with chemical warfare agent detection and identification. The review sections provide the homeland security and defense communities with an overview of chemical warfare agents and analytical methods for their determination. Researchers interested in developing new methods for chemical warfare agents may use the reviewed material to quickly ascertain the state of development of analytical methods, in particular LC-MS methods, for chemical warfare agents. The reviewed materials will be used for reference purposes during the development of high field asymmetric waveform ion mobility spectrometry (FAIMS) mass spectrometry, a new analytical technique with the potential to rapidly separate and identify chemical warfare agents. The report concludes with 67 references. Appendix A is a 454-item bibliography of open literature analytical methods for the detection and identification of chemical warfare agents, their degradation products, and related compounds. Paper copies of each paper are held at DRDC Suffield and this comprehensive database of methods continues to be updated regularly using Procite software.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Identification of Chemical Warfare Agents Certain visual indications may be Of help in determining the pres ence Of gas. If a bomb or shell has been dropped, the size Of the crater and area Of destruction will be almost negligible if the principal charge is a war gas rather than a high explosive. The usual gas bomb will produce no significant crater as contrasted to a crater 18 - 25 feet in diameter for a 250 kg. (550 lb.) high explosive bomb. The presence of a cloud, smoke, or 0i mist should be regarded with suspicion. Chlorine produces a yellow or yellowish-green cloud. Phosgene or diphosgene in strong concentrations gives a white cloud. High concentrations Of the sternutators produce visible smokes. Liquid vesicants when released as a spray will give an Oily mist which can be recognized best by viewing toward a source Of light. Care should be taken not to look upward or to otherwise expose oneself to falling vapor. Any pools, drops Of liquid, or wet 0i ground should be noted. If a spray is suspected, Observe all flat, open surfaces for the presence of dark-colored liquids indicative Of vesicants or liquid lacrimators. On dry, porous surfaces (brickwork, cement, stonework), such liquids are rapidly absorbed, leaving a dark Oily stain. On dry earth or roads, they appear as wet oily patches, while on wet surfaces, they spread and give a slightly iridescent effect similar to that produced by gasoline or Oil. These liquids rapidly penetrate wood, especially along the grain, but remain as liquid drops and splashes on painted surfaces for a considerable time. They do not penetrate metals, glass, glazed tile, etc., and remain in droplet form on green foliage and grass for some time. In water, the bulk sinks to the bottom, but a thin, somewhat iridescent film remains on the surface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: NOTE: NO FURTHER DISCOUNT FOR THIS PRODUCT-- OVERSTOCK SALE -- Significantly reduced list price This is a manual for healthcare providers caring for victims of chemical attacks or accidents. It will increase the level of preparedness and response capability of military and civilian practitioners responsible for chemical casualty care. It describes each type of agent in detail in the medical management for each, along with detection and decontamination techniques and equipment. Chemical, biological, and mid-spectrum agents are often referred to as weapons of mass destruction, or WMDs, and the official military definition of WMD includes these three kinds of agents, Chemical agents, biological agents, toxins, and point sources of radiation may cause mass casualties while leaving structures intact; a better term for these kinds of weapons is mass-casualty weapons, or MCWs. Unconventional weapons is a term used to refer to chemical agents, biological agents, toxins, nuclear and thermonuclear bombs, radiological dispersal devices (or RDDs, also called “dirty bombs”), and point sources of radiation used as weapons. .The list of chemical warfare agents officially designated as such by the US military includes those chemicals that are intended to cause death or serious injury and also those intended to cause incapacitation, that is, temporary inability to perform one’s military duties. The former are called toxic agents and include (1) lung-damaging agents (also called pulmonary or choking agents); (2) “blood” agents (specifically, cyanide compounds); (3) vesicants (blistering agents); and (4) nerve agents. Those designed to produce only temporary incapacitation are referred to as incapacitating agents. This handbook will address each of these groupings of “official” chemical warfare agents as well as riot-control agents, which are technically not chemical warfare agents according to the US military definition, but are widely used in law enforcement for mass incapacitation. Chemical agents may have chemical names as well as common names. Chemical agents developed for military use may also have a NATO code. The NATO code is a one- to three-letter designation assigned after World War II to provide standard recognizable shorthand identification. For example, the chemical compound O-isopropyl methylphosphonofluoridate has the common name sarin and the NATO code GB. This handbook will use NATO codes as well as common names for chemical agents. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book, Chemical Warfare Agents: Toxicity at Low Levels, was published just prior to the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. Reflecting a greater sense of urgency within the field of chemical defense since this event, research related to chemical warfare agents (CWAs) continues to expand at a remarkable pace.
