Book excerpt: Clair Bee (1896-1983) was a hugely successful basketball coach at Rider College and Long Island University with a 412 and 87 record before his career was derailed in 1951 by a point-shaving scandal. In the trial that sent his star player, Sherman White, to prison, the judge excoriated Bee for creating a morally lax culture that contributed to his players' involvement with gambling. To a certain extent, Bee agreed with the judge's scolding, concluding that coaches, himself included, had become so driven to succeed on the court that they had lost sight of the educational role sports should play. His coaching career effectively over, Bee launched an effort to reform the ills he saw in college sports, and he did so in the pages of the Chip Hilton novels for young readers. He began the series in 1948, but it was the post-scandal books that he used as teaching tools. The books mirrored some of the events of the gambling scandal and were Bee's attempt to reform the problems plaguing college sports. He used his fiction to posit a better sports world that he hoped his young readers would construct and inhabit. The Chip Hilton books were extremely popular and have become a classic series, with over two million copies sold to date. Hoop Crazy is the fascinating story of Clair Bee and his star character Chip Hilton and the ways in which their lives, real and fictional, were intertwined.

Book excerpt: People Go Crazy over Romance like Bees Go Wild over Honey is a hilarious and memorable look at childrens views of romance, dating, and kissing. Directly from the spontaneous comments of four- to thirteen-year-olds, the reader is taken on a lively and outrageous journey through the nature of attraction, how to make yourself more attractive, courtship etiquette, adult dating habits, how to create a relationship, how the genders are different, the childrens tips for romantically challenged grown-ups, and what happens if, by some chance, two people actually fall in love. Unlike their predecessors, this cohort of youngsters understands that the Internet is a common vehicle for meeting new people. Thus, they welcome with alacrity the opportunity to write their own dating site biographies and describe in detail what photos they would post. They also share with us, without self-consciousness, what they themselves would text on the next day after a first dateboth if they hit it off with someone and if the date falls short of expectations. The resulting missives are as poignant as they are funny, and they say so much about the human predicament of wanting relationships so earnestly and yet finding them so elusive. Here is a sample of typical choice offerings: In the beginning, you didnt have much of a choice because the only choice was the big dumb caveman in the next cave over (Samantha, age 11). Poets have been curious about love because to this very day, nobody at all understands women (Robert, age 10). Being romantic means you give a girl a kiss and a diamond ring, and she says: Thats very romantic. Can I have another? (Javier, age 8). I like girls because they are elegant and they always carry tissues with them when you need one (Efrem, age 7). If I fibbed on a dating profile, I would say I was top-rated in my class for being hot! (Eli, age 9). On Christmas, if you kiss under the mistletoe, you are supposed to get married. But if it happens by accident, God might let you off the hook (Sandy, age 9). For lovers, Valentines Day is the day you kiss and kiss until you get all puckered out and just eat chocolates as big as your heart (Claire, age 10). There is ten times more kissing on Valentines Day, so people should get the next day off just to recover! (Taylor, age 9).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never before has wildlife narration been this bold and this hilarious. More than 40 million people have viewed Randall’s honey badger video, “The Crazy Nastyass Honey Badger.” “It has no regard for anyone or anything—it just takes what it wants! What a little badass!” When viewing wildlife footage, who hasn’t thought at times, “Ewww! What the hell is that?!” Randall thinks it — and says so! In Honey Badger Don’t Care, Randall examines and humorously informs on a dozen crazy, nasty animals of the wild kingdom employing his unique style of telling it like it is! His wildlife writing is refreshingly honest. If an animal scares Randall, he’s not afraid to share. Unlike most nature writers, Randall doesn’t deliver the sugarcoated or drab description. He “goes there” and shares his true feelings with his audience. Because of this, his readers feel that they can relate. Randall loves animals—even the ones that terrify him. He may not agree with how these animals conduct themselves in the world, but Randall wants everyone to know who they are. Just as he introduced the world to the honey badger, the Jesus lizard, and others, so will Randall shed light on twelve bizarre and interesting animals. Designed with callouts, sidebars, and more than fifty photos, Honey Badger Don’t Care presents a wildlife book for adults—hilarious, irreverent, profane, yet charming, chatty, and informative. Don’t be stupid—buy this book!

Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book for 2011 One of The Economist's 2011 Books of the Year One of NPR's 10 Best Novels of 2011 From the National Book Award-winning author Denis Johnson (Tree of Smoke) comes Train Dreams, an epic in miniature, and one of Johnson's most evocative works of fiction. Suffused with the history and landscapes of the American West—its otherworldly flora and fauna, its rugged loggers and bridge builders—this extraordinary novella poignantly captures the disappearance of a distinctly American way of life. It tells the story of Robert Grainer, a day laborer in the American West at the start of the twentieth century—an ordinary man in extraordinary times. Buffeted by the loss of his family, Grainer struggles to make sense of this strange new world. As his story unfolds, we witness both his shocking personal defeats and the radical changes that transform America in his lifetime.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES, WALL STREET JOURNAL, AND BOSTON GLOBE BESTSELLER • One of the most acclaimed books of our time: an unforgettable memoir about a young woman who, kept out of school, leaves her survivalist family and goes on to earn a PhD from Cambridge University “Extraordinary . . . an act of courage and self-invention.”—The New York Times NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW • ONE OF PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA’S FAVORITE BOOKS OF THE YEAR • BILL GATES’S HOLIDAY READING LIST • FINALIST: National Book Critics Circle’s Award In Autobiography and John Leonard Prize For Best First Book • PEN/Jean Stein Book Award • Los Angeles Times Book Prize Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University. Only then would she wonder if she’d traveled too far, if there was still a way home. “Beautiful and propulsive . . . Despite the singularity of [Westover’s] childhood, the questions her book poses are universal: How much of ourselves should we give to those we love? And how much must we betray them to grow up?”—Vogue NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The Washington Post • O: The Oprah Magazine • Time • NPR • Good Morning America • San Francisco Chronicle • The Guardian • The Economist • Financial Times • Newsday • New York Post • theSkimm • Refinery29 • Bloomberg • Self • Real Simple • Town & Country • Bustle • Paste • Publishers Weekly • Library Journal • LibraryReads • Book Riot • Pamela Paul, KQED • New York Public Library

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This account of three unplanned careers supports the theory that life does not pursue a set of plans. As the author at ninety-two explains to friends, "If it weren't for World War II, I'd likely still be milking cows today." While in elementary school, Nelson and his older brother, Roy, became key parts of the family's dairy labor force. He describes his official thirty-year work career as a fertilizer salesman with clarity. Companies, bosses, and fellow employees are named. Each is given a candid appraisal. Significant failures on his part don't appear to stand in the way of his advancement. Nelson often sees this as pure luck or happenstance. As an ad-lib speaker following retirement, he describes himself as "several notches below President George Bush." And yet almost thirty years and 4,957 speeches later, high schools were still requesting his appearance when he decided to discontinue speaking engagements in the summer of 2011. Various stimulations triggered the writing of three books during the final fifteen years of his postretirement thirty-year career. The challenge of attracting publishers is described, followed by Nelson's observations of the self-publishing process.
