Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The huge popularity of The Apprentice reflects the degree to which business has emerged as a primary force in popular culture. Not suprisingly, what it takes to succeed in the cutthroat corporate environment is not unlike show business--strong ego, ability to withstand rejection, creativity, and risktaking, to name a few of the requisite qualities. Moreover, business figures are increasingly spotlighted in the popular press, either lauded as exemplars of vision, drive, and service to the community or vilified as monsters of greed. For the millions of students pursuing degrees related to business, would-be entrepreneurs dreaming of launching their own enterprises, and frontline employees and managers on their way up the corporate ladder, learning by example is a powerful tool, and the leaders who exemplify business success serve as models. Icons of Business presents 24 entrepreneurs, corporate executives, and mavericks whose influence extends beyond business into society at large. From Martha Stewart to Ben and Jerry, Bill Gates to Anita Roddick, Icons of Business offers indepth profiles of the business leaders whose names and products have become household words. Each profile includes discussion of the subject's background, career, accomplishments, supporters and detractors, and lasting influence. Special features include timelines, sidebars, quotations by and about the subject, photos, company information, publication lists, and print and electronic references. Cross-referenced and indexed, Icons of Business is an essential introduction to the people who mean business.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the heroes and villains of popular comic books—and the creators of these icons of our culture—reflect the American experience out of which they sprang, and how they have achieved relevance by adapting to, and perhaps influencing, the evolving American character. Multiple generations have thrilled to the exploits of the heroes and villains of American comic books. These imaginary characters permeate our culture—even Americans who have never read a comic book grasp what the most well-known examples represent. But these comic book characters, and their creators, do more than simply thrill: they make us consider who we are and who we aspire to be. Icons of the American Comic Book: From Captain America to Wonder Woman contains 100 entries that provide historical background, explore the impact of the comic-book character on American culture, and summarize what is iconic about the subject of the entry. Each entry also lists essential works, suggests further readings, and contains at least one sidebar that provides entertaining and often quirky insight not covered in the main entry. This two-volume work examines fascinating subjects, such as how the superhero concept embodied the essence of American culture in the 1930s; and the ways in which comic book icons have evolved to reflect changing circumstances, values, and attitudes regarding cultural diversity. The book's coverage extends beyond just characters, as it also includes entries devoted to creators, publishers, titles, and even comic book related phenomena that have had enduring significance.

Icons of Women's Sport identifies and examines the individuals who have impacted history, challenged the status quo, influenced sport culture, and garnered wide public interest. Including stars from the past and present, ranging from Babe Didrikson Zaharias and Billie Jean King to Dara Torres and Venus and Serena Williams, the featured athletes are iconic not only because of their achievements in the sports arena, but also because of their contributions to society: advancing cultural diversity and gender equity, breaking class barriers, and transcending stereotypes. The book contains biographies of 36 women athletes—American and international—who excelled in competitive sports from the post-World War I era through the modern era in a dozen different sports. Icons of Women's Sport spotlights athletes across a wide range of women's sports, with appropriate attention given to the major sports. Readers will enjoy learning about stars from both amateur and professional sports arenas, including Olympic athletes, as well as female competitors who have reached the top of their game in newer arenas such as golf and snowboarding.

Yet, pragmatic guidance on identifying and managing transfer pricing risk is lacking. Consequently, CFOs and other stakeholders tend to underestimate risks while overestimating the costs for mitigating such risks. The first objective of the Survival Guide is to shed light on typical transfer pricing risks and provide an intuitive "risk matrix" that is designed to help CFOs as well as tax advisors to develop a quantitative understanding of the relevant risks. The second objective is to outline targeted mitigation strategies. The mitigation strategies outlined in the Survival Guide are based on pragmatic considerations rather than complex analysis. The aim is to provide you with concise explanations and help you to differentiate between tasks that are considered a "must" for mitigation purposes and those that can be regarded as merely "nice to have" The immediate utilization of the Survival Guide is as a frame of reference for making informed decisions about the scope and target of your transfer pricing projects. The Survival Guide presents a framework for thinking about transfer pricing risk that will also benefit tax professionals as well as academics with an interest in understanding the nature of transfer pricing risks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Does anyone really want to know what caused the death of Marilyn Monroe?” The long afterlife of cultural and cinematic icon Marilyn Monroe has created a tragic paradox. In this post-truth era, Monroe has been recast as a victim of powerful men, a virtual simulacrum of desire and death. The sensational narrative constantly regurgitated in media reports, books, and documentaries rests on a stacked deck of hearsay and outright lies. Conspiracy theories offer a simplistic, yet tantalizing, framing device for the abundance of information hurled at us by global mass media. In an explosive takedown, Gary Vitacco - Robles – author of Icon: The Life Times, and Films of Marilyn Monroe – unpacks the falsehoods perpetuated by a rogues’ gallery of shadowy opportunists. With surgical skill, he separates fact from fiction, probable theory from outlandish rumor. As a practicing psychotherapist, the author is uniquely qualified to re-examine Monroe’s lifelong struggle with mental illness and spiraling addiction to medications liberally prescribed by successive doctors. In this definitive study - based upon decades of research, legitimate sources, the never-before-released Los Angeles District Attorney’s investigation, and police investigations from 1962, 1975, and 1985 - the reader is presented with facts to finally learn the truth about how Monroe died and who was responsible.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second half of the insightful anthology of essays and book chapters from the American technical philosopher. In addition to being one of the greatest technical philosophers of the twentieth century, John Dewey (1859–1952) was an educational innovator, a Progressive Era reformer, and one of America’s last great public intellectuals. Dewey’s insights into the problems of public education, immigration, the prospects for democratic government, and the relation of religious faith to science are as fresh today as when they were first published. His penetrating treatments of the nature and function of philosophy, the ethical and aesthetic dimensions of life, and the role of inquiry in human experience are of increasing relevance at the turn of the twenty-first century. Based on the award-winning thirty-seven-volume critical edition of Dewey’s work, The Essential Dewey presents for the first time a collection of Dewey’s writings that is both manageable and comprehensive. The volume includes essays and book chapters that exhibit Dewey’s intellectual development over time; the selection represents his mature thinking on every major issue to which he turned his attention. Eleven part divisions cover: Dewey in Context; Reconstructing Philosophy; Evolutionary Naturalism; Pragmatic Metaphysics; Habit, Conduct, and Language; Meaning, Truth, and Inquiry; Valuation and Ethics; The Aims of Education; The Individual, the Community, and Democracy; Pragmatism and Culture: Science and Technology, Art and Religion; and Interpretations and Critiques. Taken as a whole, this collection provides unique access to Dewey’s understanding of the problems and prospects of human existence and of the philosophical enterprise. “In the course of his long life, Dewey wrote and published on myriad topics: certainly, and perhaps most importantly to him, on public education, but also—and extensively—on technical philosophy, including metaphysics, epistemology, logic, aesthetics, religion, science, ethics, and social philosophy. And though neglected by academic philosophers for a time, Dewey’s pragmatic orientation has recently proved influential in the thought of Quine, Putnam, and Rorty, among others. This two-volume collection of essays and book chapters, culled from an earlier 37-volume critical edition of his works, provides for the first time a publication of his writings that is both manageable and comprehensive.” —Library Journal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get back to the roots on Revelation Through the centuries since its writing, the book of Revelation has captured the fascination of the Christian church. The earliest Christians were unanimous in understanding it along a premillennial view of Jesus' second coming, but other hermeneutical approaches began to emerge in the third century. These clouded, and added complexity to, the task of explaining the book’s meaning. For most of the Christian era, consequently, many readers have viewed this last of the NT writings as though it were hopelessly embedded in an aura of deep mystery. An avalanche of interpretive literature has evidenced remarkable interest in the book’s contents, but along with the interest has come widespread bewilderment. Written especially for the informed layman, student, and scholar, this commentary seeks to clear the air. The book is interpreted according to a historical and grammatical hermeneutic and propounds a conservative, evangelical theology, but the reader will not get a narrow view on areas of disagreement. This commentary interacts with a range of major views, both evangelical and nonevangelical. It reaffirms the basic framework of eschatology espoused by ancient Christianity, but with added help from centuries of maturing thought and doctrinal progress in the Body of Christ. All exegesis and exposition in this 2-volume commentary are based on the original language of the text. Translations used are those of the author, and textual criticism and word study are included where appropriate. This in-depth commentary also includes extended excursuses on important topics of theological and historical interest.

This book was released on 1985 with total page 1100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second and final volume of the business history of one of the UK's oldest and largest insurance offices, based upon probably the best archive in the business. This volume covers the period from 1870 to the absorption of the Phoenix by Sun Alliance (now Royal and Sun Alliance) in 1984. The Phoenix papers are used to analyse the triumphs and trials, not only of a single insurance venture, but of an entire financial sector in a notably turbulent century. Insurance is concerned with the way people drive, the way they retire, or buy their houses, or invest, or educate their children, or go to war. It follows that a major insurance history also throws light on many aspects of modern British social history. As the great composite offices expanded to offer fire, accident, marine, and life insurance across a single 'counter', so they caught within their dealings an increasingly representative slice of British commercial and social life.
