Book excerpt: In Palermo Italian yes-no interrogatives, if the last syllable of a phrase is unstressed, the nuclear pitch contour is rising-falling, whereas if it is stressed, the contour is simply rising. Such context-dependent variation cannot be adequately accounted for within a British-style approach to intonation. By contrast, autosegmental pitch accent studies of intonation, where nuclear pitch configurations are expressed in terms of H(igh) and L(ow) tones, are shown to offer the flexibility necessary to do so. These tones are incorporated into a hierarchical structure in which they have either an accentual or a primarily delimitative function. In the former case, tones are part of a Pitch Accent which has an association to a syllable; in the latter case, tones are associated to nodes representing higher prosodic constituents, either the intermediate phrase or the intonation phrase, and are realised as boundary tones. Building on current analyses, a model is proposed in which tones in the Pitch Accent are also hierarchically structured, involving two levels: the Supertone and Tone. This extended Pitch Accent structure not only explains apparent inconsistencies in phonetic alignment in Palermo Italian, but also accounts for equivalent consistency in alignment in English. In addition it allows leading tones in Palermo Italian to be treated in a qualitatively different way from leading tones in English. The Palermo Italian interrogative marker consists of a L*+H Pitch Accent. There is no paradigmatic contrast on the intermediate phrase boundary tone (it is always L) which means that its function is purely delimitative. This tone is only fully realised when a postaccentual syllable is available to carry it; technically, it requires a secondary attachment to a syllable. The absence of the falling part of the L*+HL (L) configuration in phrases with no postaccentual syllable is thus explained.

With this book, he makes two major contributions to the field of information retrieval: first, a new way to look at topical relevance, complementing the two dominant models, i.e., the classical probabilistic model and the language modeling approach, and which explicitly combines documents, queries, and relevance in a single formalism; second, a new method for modeling exchangeable sequences of discrete random variables which does not make any structural assumptions about the data and which can also handle rare events. This framework encompasses many well known techniques in data analysis, such as nonnegative matrix factorization, matrix completion, sparse and robust PCA, k-means, k-SVD, and maximum margin matrix factorization. The method handles heterogeneous data sets, and leads to coherent schemes for compressing, denoising, and imputing missing entries across all data types simultaneously. It also admits a number of interesting interpretations of the low rank factors, which allow clustering of examples or of features. We propose several parallel algorithms for fitting generalized low rank models, and describe implementations and numerical results.

Book excerpt: Compressed sensing refers to a growing body of techniques that `undersample' high-dimensional signals and yet recover them accurately. Such techniques make fewer measurements than traditional sampling theory demands: rather than sampling proportional to frequency bandwidth, they make only as many measurements as the underlying `information content' of those signals. However, as compared with traditional sampling theory, which can recover signals by applying simple linear reconstruction formulas, the task of signal recovery from reduced measurements requires nonlinear, and so far, relatively expensive reconstruction schemes. One popular class of reconstruction schemes uses linear programming (LP) methods; there is an elegant theory for such schemes promising large improvements over ordinary sampling rules in recovering sparse signals. However, solving the required LPs is substantially more expensive in applications than the linear reconstruction schemes that are now standard. In certain imaging problems, the signal to be acquired may be an image with $10^6$ pixels and the required LP would involve tens of thousands of constraints and millions of variables. Despite advances in the speed of LP, such methods are still dramatically more expensive to solve than we would like. In this thesis we focus on a class of low computational complexity algorithms known as iterative thresholding. We study them both theoretically and empirically. We will also introduce a new class of algorithms called approximate message passing or AMP. These schemes have several advantages over the classical thresholding approaches. First, they take advantage of the statistical properties of the problem to improve the convergence rate and predictability of the algorithm. Second, the nice properties of these algorithms enable us to make very accurate theoretical predictions on the asymptotic performance of LPs as well. It will be shown that more traditional techniques such as coherence and restricted isometry property are not able to make such precise predictions.

In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Hany Farid offers a concise and accessible guide to techniques for detecting doctored and fake images in photographs and digital media. Farid, an expert in photo forensics, has spent two decades developing techniques for authenticating digital images. These techniques model the entire image-creation process in order to find the digital disruption introduced by manipulation of the image.
