Book Synopsis Genes from the Wild by : Robert Prescott-Allen
Download or read book Genes from the Wild written by Robert Prescott-Allen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tomatoes could not be grown commercially without the help of their wild relatives. A single wild species of rice has helped double rice production in Asia. Wild silk-worms are enabling India to expand its silk industry. A wild carp with resistance to cold has been used to extend Soviet carp production further into the north. Wild genetic resources - the heritable characteristics of wild plants and animals - are used increasingly to improve domesticated crops and livestock and as new sources of food and of raw materials. But habitat destruction, over-exploitation and competition from introduced species is destroying many gene pools even before they have been identified. Genes from the Wild describes the growing contribution of wild genetic resources to the production of food and raw materials, describes their characteristics, explains the benefits and problems of using them and outlines the ways in which they are threatened and the measures being taken to conserve them. Originally published in 1988

Book Synopsis Plant Genetic Resources by : John Gregory Hawkes

Book excerpt: This genetic resources impact study was commissioned as part of a general impact study on all aspects of agricultural research and development within the CGIAR organization. Since the term genetic resources often means different things to different people, the first part of this report gives a discussion on the subject and attempts to define the terminology in general use. The second part of the report describes the genetic resources activities of the international centres and of the International Board of Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR). It also attempts to evaluate the impacts of each stage in the genetic resources chain. The third part sums up the work, assesses its strengths and weaknesses, and makes suggestions for future development. The writer concludes that genetic resources are being made freely available to those who request them. The International Board of Plant Genetic Resources is promoting and developing the use of genetic resources materials, and IARC breeders are taking full advantage of the germplasm available to them, passing breeding lines and selections to national programmes for further trials and, where appropriate, releasing new varieties with better yields, adaptation and resistances than those previously available.

This book was released on 2019-10-14 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the development of innovative modern methodologies towards augmenting conventional plant breeding, in individual crops, for the production of new crop varieties under the increasingly limiting environmental and cultivation factors to achieve sustainable agricultural production, enhanced food security, in addition to providing raw materials for innovative industrial products and pharmaceuticals. This is Vol 6, subtitled Industrial and Food Crops, which consists of two parts. Included in Part I are 11 industrial plant species utilized as sources of raw materials for the production of industrial products including pulp and wood crops (acacia), fiber (cotton, jute and ramie), rubber (guayule and rubber tree), oil (jojoba and flax), biofuels and pharmaceutical (agave) and sugar source (sugarcane). Part II covers 7 food plants selected for their utilization in food industries for the production of chocolate (cacao), cooking oil (oil palm, safflower, sesame and sunflower) and natural flavors and aroma (saffron and vanilla). This volume is contributed by 60 internationally reputable scientists from 14 countries. Each chapter comprehensively reviews the modern literature on the subject and reflects the authors own experience.

This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant genetic resources provide a basis for food security, livelihood support and economic development as a major component of biodiversity. The Second Report on the State of the World’s Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture demonstrates the central role plant genetic diversity continues to play in shaping agriculture growth in the face of climate change and other environmental challenges. It is based on information gathered from Country Reports, regional syntheses, thematic studie s and scientific literature, documenting the major achievements made in this sector during the past decade and identifying the critical gaps and needs that should urgently be addressed. The Report provides the decision-makers with a technical basis for updating the Global Plan of Action on Conservation and Sustainable Use of Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. It also aims to attract the attention of the global community to set priorities for the effective management of plant genet ic resources for the future. Purchase a print copy.
