Book excerpt: What does an eleven-year-old boy do when he learns of a subterranean world? If he is adventurous and imaginative, he sets out to find it of course; and that is just what Ian Lawrence does. After solving the Portal’s secret, he enters the strange, but wonderful world of Arboritia. An amusing meeting with a Woodin called Bunkin draws him into an adventure he never expected. He learns of the theft of a special wand tip from a wondrous wand belonging to the unusual Snake Wizard, Snuggly P. Wigglesworth, and the effect this act will have on the Arboritian forest. The boy designs and helps the troubled Woodin community construct a hot air balloon based on Ian’s class science project. The balloon takes Ian, Bunkin, and a Woodin huntsman, Senic, over Turquoise Lake to Shrouded Mountain. On the mountain’s forbidding, fog-covered plateau they encounter many dangerous obstacles among which are fogworms, mire pots, polymorphs, genyxs, and xordions. But their greatest challenge is the Gnobblin thief and rogue, Naggins, who gives the reader a humorous encounter with his own guardsmen; and the frightening creature called Abominus, who stands in the way to Turquoise Lake and home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapidity of change in education has intensified in recent years. With the emergence of ‘co-operative schools’ and a new framework focusing heavily on co-operation, a direct challenge to ways of thinking about education, at both school and university level, has developed. Co-operation, Learning and Co-operative Values addresses the urgent need to describe, analyse and assess the growth of co-operative education. The relationship between co-operation and education is a complex process and this book critically reflects on the tensions and obstacles facing this movement. It brings together the contributions of academics and practitioners from a range of backgrounds, and explores topics including: Theories and histories of co-operative values and principles Critical views of the practice of co-operative education Case studies of processes in action from both schools and higher education Co-operative education in a wider context This book provides an essential introduction to a new and expanding area of research with chapters by many leading commentators in education. It will be of interest to researchers and educators interested in education and social policy.

Book excerpt: A Boston Globe Best Book of 2021: “Lyrical, closely observed” essays on being Black in the US, Canada, and Trinidad, and how those experiences differed (Kirkus Reviews). Finalist for the 2021 Hilary Weston Writers’ Trust Prize for Nonfiction With that one eloquent word, disorientation, Scotiabank Giller Award winner Ian Williams captures the impact of racial encounters on racialized people—the whiplash of race that occurs while minding one’s own business. Sometimes the consequences are only irritating, but sometimes they are deadly. Spurred by the police killings and street protests of 2020, Williams offers a perspective that is distinct from that of US writers addressing similar themes. Williams has lived in Trinidad (where he was never the only Black person in the room), in Canada (where he often was), and in the United States (where as a Black man from the Caribbean, he was a different kind of “only”). He brings these formative experiences fruitfully to bear on his theme in Disorientation. Inspired by the essays of James Baldwin, in which the personal becomes the gateway to larger ideas, Williams explores such matters as the unmistakable moment when a child realizes they are Black; the ten characteristics of institutional whiteness; how friendship forms a bulwark against being a target of racism; the meaning and uses of a Black person’s smile; and blame culture—or how do we make meaningful change when no one feels responsible for the systemic structures of the past. Disorientation is a book for all readers who believe that civil conversation on even the most charged subjects is possible. Employing his wit, his empathy for all, and his vast and astonishing gift for language, Ian Williams gives readers an open, candid, and personal perspective on an undeniably important subject. “Honest, vulnerable, courageous and funny.” —Lawrence Hill, author of The Book of Negroes

This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Witt Library of the Courtauld Institute of Art, London, is one of the world's greatest art history libraries. It contains some 1.7 million illustrations of the work of painters, draughtsmen, and engravers of the Western tradition, all of whom have been indexed by name, dates, and nationality. This new second edition of the Checklist of Painters is a transcription of the Witt index as it currently exists. The names of 66,000 artists, their dates, and their nationality (or school) are reproduced in alphabetical order. The Checklist of Painters is probably the most exhaustive work of its kind in existence; it now lists all painters (known by art historians) to have lived and worked from the year 1200 to 1994. It will be an important reference text in the art history collection of any public, academic, or professional library.
