In Reading the Bible Supernaturally, best-selling author John Piper teaches us how to read the Bible in light of its divine author. In doing so, he highlights the Bible's unique ability to reveal God to humanity in a way that informs our minds, transforms our hearts, and ignites our love. With insights into the biblical text drawn from decades of experience studying, preaching, and teaching Scripture, Piper helps us experience the transformative power of God's Word—a power that extends beyond the mere words on the page. Ultimately, Piper shows us that in the seemingly ordinary act of reading the Bible, something supernatural happens: we encounter the living God.
Book Synopsis "Isaiah Saw His Glory" by : Daniel J. Brendsel
Download or read book "Isaiah Saw His Glory" written by Daniel J. Brendsel and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2014-10-29 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of Isaiah on John's narrative and theology has long been recognized, but it has yet to receive monograph-length attention. This study is a beginning attempt to fill that void through an examination of the use of Isaiah in the crucial hinge of John's gospel - John 12:1-43. Beginning with a reading of Isaiah 40-55 illustrating a way in which early Christians may have read this important section of Scripture, the bulk of the study examines the pericopes in John 12:1-43, seeking to identify and interpret John's use of Isaiah 52-53. It is concluded that a reading of this well-known Isaianic text rooted within its broader context in Isaiah, together with the mediating influence of other texts - notably Isa 6:9-10 and Zech 9:9-10 - has fueled much Johannine theology, Christology, and ecclesiology. Moreover, mirroring the progression of Isa 52:7-53:1 in John 12 is the author's way of underlining Jesus' identity as the Servant of God and announcing that the second exodus prophesied by Isaiah is secured by the rejection (and death) of Jesus.
Book Synopsis Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ (Revised Edition) by : John Piper
Download or read book Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ (Revised Edition) written by John Piper and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2004-10-27 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is Jesus Christ? You've never met him in person, and you don't know anyone who has. But there is a way to know who he is. How? Jesus Christ-the divine Person revealed in the Bible-has a unique excellence and a spiritual beauty that speaks directly to our souls and says, "Yes, this is truth." It's like seeing the sun and knowing that it is light, or tasting honey and knowing that it is sweet. The depth and complexity of Jesus shatter our simple mental frameworks. He baffled proud scribes with his wisdom but was understood and loved by children. He calmed a raging storm with a word but would not get himself down from the cross. Look at the Jesus of the Bible. Keep your eyes open, and fill them with the portrait of Jesus in God's Word. Jesus said, "If anyone's will is to do God's will, he will know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking on my own authority." Ask God for the grace to do his will, and you will see the truth of his Son. John Piper has written this book in the hope that all will see Jesus for who he really is and will come to enjoy him above all else.

Book Synopsis The Beauty of the Lord by : Jonathan King
Download or read book The Beauty of the Lord written by Jonathan King and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is God's beauty often absent from our theology? Rarely do theologians take up the theme of God's beauty—even more rarely do they consider how God's beauty should shape the task of theology itself. But the psalmist says that the heart of the believer's desire is to behold the beauty of the Lord. In The Beauty of the Lord, Jonathan King restores aesthetics as not merely a valid lens for theological reflection, but an essential one. Jesus, our incarnate Redeemer, displays the Triune God's beauty in his actions and person, from creation to final consummation. How can and should theology better reflect this unveiled beauty? The Beauty of the Lord is a renewal of a truly aesthetic theology and a properly theological aesthetics.

Book excerpt: Methodist minister and Civil War chaplain Edward McKendree Bounds (1835-1913) considered conversation with God as fundamentally vital to the Christian's life as physical breath. This attractive volume features the very best of his beloved writings. "God shapes the world by prayer. Prayers are deathless. Book excerpt: "The soul is lifted up by the contemplation of the glory of God and of his only begotten Son," writes R. C. Sproul. "It is Christ in his glory who is the object of our worship and adoration. As Christians we join the communion of saints and the host of heaven in lifting up praise and honor to him." During his earthly life and ministry, Jesus experienced humiliation and suffering. "His humanity served as a veil that concealed the splendor of his deity," Sproul continues. "Yet there were moments when his glory shone through." These moments become the focus of The Glory of Christ. From the angels' revelation of Jesus' glory to the shepherds outside Bethlehem, to Jesus' life-changing revelation of his glory to Paul on the Damascus Road, Sproul guides us to a deeper understanding of Christ's glory. Paul said to King Agrippa about his conversion experience, "I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven." Sproul concludes: "This is the statement every Christian longs to make at the end of his life. This is the proper response to the manifestation of the glory of Christ." Book jacket.

Download or read book A Sudden Glory written by Sharon Jaynes and published by Multnomah. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you long for something more in your relationship with God? The good news is that “something more” does not mean “doing more.” God is not waiting for you to get your spiritual life “right.” He wants to be with you right where you are. The real question is not “What does God want from you?” but “What does God want for you?” Sharon Jaynes understands what it’s like to have a “glory ache”—a longing to experience God’s presence on a daily basis. She also knows how easily working for God can get in the way of intimacy with God. And she’s discovered that we tend to make our faith journey much too hard. In A Sudden Glory, Sharon uses Scripture and story to help you erase the line between your “spiritual life” and your “daily life” as you enter the sanctuary of God’s presence even in the middle of your busy, messy day. Here you will find your eyes opened to moments of sudden glory in which the Creator assures you of His love as you live and move and have your being in Him. Here you will discover true freedom—the freedom of experiencing God in a deeper and more intimate way than ever before. Includes Bible study and discussion guide.
Book Synopsis God's Glory in Salvation through Judgment by : James M. Hamilton Jr.
Download or read book God's Glory in Salvation through Judgment written by James M. Hamilton Jr. and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Exodus 34 Moses asks to see God's glory, and God reveals himself as a God who is merciful and just. James Hamilton Jr. contends that from this passage comes a biblical theology that unites the meta-narrative of Scripture under one central theme: God's glory in salvation through judgment. Hamilton begins in the Old Testament by showing that Israel was saved through God's judgment on the Egyptians and the Caananites. God was glorified through both his judgment and mercy, accorded in salvation to Israel. The New Testament unfolds the ultimate display of God's glory in justice and mercy, as it was God's righteous judgment shown on the cross that brought us salvation. God's glory in salvation through judgment will be shown at the end of time, when Christ returns to judge his enemies and save all who have called on his name. Hamilton moves through the Bible book by book, showing that there is one theological center to the whole Bible. The volume's systematic method and scope make it a unique resource for pastors, professors, and students.
