Book excerpt: This collective volume has been dedicated to two distinguished scholars of Neo-Latin Studies on the occasion of their retirement after a long and fruitful academic career, one at the Université catholique Louvain-la-Neuve, the other at the internationally renowned Seminarium Philologiae Humanisticae of Leuven University. Both the rich variety of subjects dealt with and the international diversity of the scholars authoring contributions reflect the wide interests of the celebrated Neo-Latinists, their international position, and the actual status of the discipline itself. Ranging from the Trecento to the 21st century, and embracing Latin writings from Italy, Hungary, The Netherlands, Germany, France, Poland, the New World, Spain, Scotland, Denmark and China, this volume is as rich and multifaceted as it is voluminous, for it not only offers studies on well-known figures such as Petrarch, Lorenzo Valla, Erasmus, Vives, Thomas More, Eobanus Hessus, Lipsius, Tycho Brahe, Jean de la Fontaine and Jacob Cats, but it also includes new contributions on Renaissance commentaries and editions of classical authors such as Homer, Seneca and Horace; on Neo-Latin novels, epistolography and Renaissance rhetoric; on Latin translations from the vernacular and invectives against Napoleon; on the teaching of Latin in the 19th century; and on the didactics of Neo-Latin nowadays.

Book Synopsis Trade and Industry in Early Modern Italy by : Domenico Sella
Download or read book Trade and Industry in Early Modern Italy written by Domenico Sella and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a set of classic essays by Domenico Sella in which he reassesses the economic fortunes of Northern Italy, in particular Lombardy and Venice, during the 16th and 17th centuries. In addition, the literature on the economics and society of northern Italy had hitherto dealt primarily with the major cities, Milan, Florence and Venice, and their celebrated manufactures, extensive commercial activities and banking. By contrast their countryside was largely neglected and its population dismissed as an undifferentiated mass of peasants fully engaged in farming. The essays in this volume represent as many soundings into this "long forgotten" rural world. As it turns out, rural communities often harbored handicraft industries, and the latter appear to have avoided the debacle that hit the urban economies and their celebrated manufactures, highly regulated as they were by the guilds, in the face of international competition.

This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Poteri signorili e feudali nelle campagne dell'Italia settentrionale fra Tre e Quattrocento by : Federica Cengarle
Download or read book Poteri signorili e feudali nelle campagne dell'Italia settentrionale fra Tre e Quattrocento written by Federica Cengarle and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the study convention held in Milan on 11 and 12 April 2003. The objective of these study days was to address the question of the powers of lordship which were exercised in the countryside of central-northern Italy between the mid fourteenth century and the end of the fifteenth century. The discussions focused on what instruments and what foundations of legitimacy these same powers had and what was their relationship with the authority of the prince and with the ordinary citizen, on the one hand, and with the community and the homines on the other. These and various other issues thrown up by the study of feudal power are the topics which emerge in the various contributions gathered in this volume, devoted principally to the Lombardy of the Visconti and the Sforza, but also to other areas of Italy.

Book Synopsis Dante the Lyric and Ethical Poet by : Zygmunt G. Bara'nski
Download or read book Dante the Lyric and Ethical Poet written by Zygmunt G. Bara'nski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book presents the proceedings of the fifth meeting of the International Dante Seminar. As with previous volumes, the proceedings also include a carefully edited account of the extensive discussions which followed the presentations. The papers, given by some of the leading international scholars of the poet - from Italy, the UK and the USA - address four major topics of particular concern to present-day Dante studies: Dante as a lyric poet; Dante as an ethical poet; Dante and the Eclogues; and Dante in nineteenth-century Britain. These topics reflect both areas which are currently the subject of heated critical debate (several editions of the lyric poems are in preparation, and the ethical dimension of Dantes works is very much under discussion) and areas which are long overdue a reassessment (Dantes remarkable revival of Latin pastoral poetry, and the extraordinary British contribution to Dante studies in the nineteenth century). As this set of conference proceedings makes clear, in Dante and in his legacy, ethics and poetry are inseparable. The contributors include Paola Allegretti, Michael Caesar, Paolo Falzone, Manuele Gragnolati, Claudio Giunta, Claire Honess, Robin Kirkpatrick, John Lindon, Lino Pertile, Justin Steinberg, Claudia Villa, and Diego Zancani."
