Download or read book Love and Science written by Jan Vilcek and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before he became one of the world's most celebrated immunologists, Jan Vilcek began life in Slovakia as the child of Jewish parents at a time when Jews were being exterminated all across Europe. He owes his and his mother’s survival to the courage of brave people and good luck. As a young man growing up in Czechoslovakia in the aftermath of the Second World War, Vilcek went to medical school and chose a career in virology and immunology at a time when these fields were still in their infancy. While still in his twenties he published a paper in the prestigious journal Nature, and he hosted the first international conference on interferon. Fleeing Communist Czechoslovakia with his wife Marica, Vilcek continued his research at NYU School of Medicine, going on to establish a highly successful career in biomedical research, and creating one of the most important and trailblazing medicines of our age. After his arrival in the US in 1965 as a penniless refugee, he soon went on to spearhead some of the key advances in the research of interferon that enabled its therapeutic application, and through his research into tumor necrosis factor (TNF) made advances that led to the discovery of new genes and proteins and signaling pathways, opening up previously uncharted areas of medical innovation that have led to important new treatments for a wide range of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Along the way Vilcek acquired material wealth he had never aspired to, catapulting him into the world of philanthropy. Love and Science shows how advances in science sometimes result from the greatest disappointments, and how achievement in medical research is usually a team effort, where ideas are shared, where friendship and love sometimes matter most and serendipity is as important as a will to succeed—and where, over time, the least expected thing sometimes becomes the most important. In Vilcek's case the vaunted cure for cancer that many saw in TNF never materialized. However, out of the ashes of that hope came many related treatments that have changed countless lives and alleviated much suffering.

Book Synopsis The Science of Love by : Anthony Walsh
Download or read book The Science of Love written by Anthony Walsh and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of 'love' has been addressed in books that range from collections of syrupy aphorisms to 'how-to' books on relationships. But love is far too broad and interesting a topic to be limited in this way. Although this book includes three chapters on romantic love, it broadens the scope to include the role of love in the developmental process of infants and children, on physical and mental health and illness, on violent criminality, and other social aspects of love. The literature reviewed for the book includes anthropology, biology, brain anatomy/physiology, chemistry, genetics, immunology, medicine, psychiatry, psychology, sociology, and zoology. The emphasis is on what various scientific disciplines have discovered about the role of love, but Anthony Walsh also presents historical, mythological, and philosophical insights where appropriate.
Book Synopsis Loving Science – but Not the Empire by : Jay Sonstroem
Download or read book Loving Science – but Not the Empire written by Jay Sonstroem and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-02-27 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades the world has been telling us that God is dead and science has proven it, but is that really true? As the evidence has continued to accumulate, the tide has turned. God is back to full health and not only that, but He is far more awesome and ingenious than we ever imagined. Now it is the scientific establishment that is on the ropes as a century of errors and deception has been unearthed. In Loving Science – But Not the Empire, experimental scientist Jay Sonstroem helps readers discern between the findings of real science and fables, which have been pushed by an entity he calls The Empire. Jay provides short, readable chapters to reveal both the wonders of creation and the schemes and blunders of The Empire, which have resulted from its hijacked version of science. Topics include the hidden truth of DNA, the wonders of biology, the fine-tuning of the universe, and evolution and Darwinism debunked. Is it possible to love science but not worship it? You bet. Does a person who believes in God have to give up Reason? No. Come along and piece together the puzzle of life, the universe, and everything in between. What you believe about your origins has everything to do with what you believe about your destiny. Follow the light, find the Truth, and together, let’s free science from a Godless agenda.

Book Synopsis Between Science and Society by : Douglas A. Van Belle
Download or read book Between Science and Society written by Douglas A. Van Belle and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Between Science and Society: Charting the Space of Science Fiction, Douglas A. Van Belle uses interviews with 24 science fiction authors to analyze the conceptual space that science fiction occupies between science and society. Using these interviews, Van Belle studies the similarities and differences between the academic and professional understandings of the genre. Between Science and Society arguesthat, for authors, all of the aspects of the genre that are emphasized by academics, such as science communication and depictions of scientists, are secondary to the artistic effort to entertain through storytelling. Through his interviews, Van Belle explores both the genre’s place in relation to science and society and key elements to surviving as a professional science fiction author. Van Belle creates a definition of science fiction based on the creative ideals expressed by these authors and compared to those that arise from the academic perspective, showing that academics are struggling to engage one of the two central ideals of the genre.
