Book Synopsis The Book of Basketball by : Bill Simmons
Download or read book The Book of Basketball written by Bill Simmons and published by ESPN. This book was released on 2010-12-07 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The NBA according to The Sports Guy—now updated with fresh takes on LeBron, the Celtics, and more! Foreword by Malcom Gladwell • “The work of a true fan . . . it might just represent the next phase of sports commentary.”—The Atlantic Bill Simmons, the wildly opinionated and thoroughly entertaining basketball addict known to millions as ESPN’s The Sports Guy, has written the definitive book on the past, present, and future of the NBA. From the age-old question of who actually won the rivalry between Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain to the one about which team was truly the best of all time, Simmons opens—and then closes, once and for all—every major pro basketball debate. Then he takes it further by completely reevaluating not only how NBA Hall of Fame inductees should be chosen but how the institution must be reshaped from the ground up, the result being the Pyramid: Simmons’s one-of-a-kind five-level shrine to the ninety-six greatest players in the history of pro basketball. And ultimately he takes fans to the heart of it all, as he uses a conversation with one NBA great to uncover that coveted thing: The Secret of Basketball. Comprehensive, authoritative, controversial, hilarious, and impossible to put down (even for Celtic-haters), The Book of Basketball offers every hardwood fan a courtside seat beside the game’s finest, funniest, and fiercest chronicler.

Book Synopsis All Stars Fall: A Seaside Pictures/Big Sky Novella by : Rachel Van Dyken
Download or read book All Stars Fall: A Seaside Pictures/Big Sky Novella written by Rachel Van Dyken and published by Evil Eye Concepts, Incorporated. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken… She left. Two words I can't really get out of my head. She left us. Three more words that make it that much worse. Three being another word I can't seem to wrap my mind around. Three kids under the age of six, and she left because she missed it. Because her dream had never been to have a family, no her dream had been to marry a rockstar and live the high life. Moving my recording studio to Seaside Oregon seems like the best idea in the world right now especially since Seaside Oregon has turned into the place for celebrities to stay and raise families in between touring and producing. It would be lucrative to make the move, but I'm doing it for my kids because they need normal, they deserve normal. And me? Well, I just need a break and help, that too. I need a sitter and fast. Someone who won't flip me off when I ask them to sign an Iron Clad NDA, someone who won't sell our pictures to the press, and most of all? Someone who looks absolutely nothing like my ex-wife. He's tall. That was my first instinct when I saw the notorious Trevor Wood, drummer for the rock band Adrenaline, in the local coffee shop. He ordered a tall black coffee which made me smirk, and five minutes later I somehow agreed to interview for a nanny position. I couldn't help it; the smaller one had gum stuck in her hair while the eldest was standing on his feet and asking where babies came from. He looked so pathetic, so damn sexy and pathetic that rather than be star-struck, I took pity. I knew though; I knew the minute I signed that NDA, the minute our fingers brushed and my body became insanely aware of how close he was—I was in dangerous territory, I just didn't know how dangerous until it was too late. Until I fell for the star and realized that no matter how high they are in the sky—they're still human and fall just as hard. The Kristen Proby Crossover Collection features a new novel by Kristen Proby and six books by some of her favorite writers: Kristen Proby – Soaring with Fallon Sawyer Bennett – Wicked Force KL Grayson – Crazy Imperfect Love Laura Kaye – Worth Fighting For Monica Murphy – Nothing Without You Rachel Van Dyken – All Stars Fall Samantha Young – Hold On
Download or read book A Hoop Fable written by Harvey A. Kaplan and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2022-05-26 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Larry’s parents had never seen him so preoccupied and possessed. For hours each day, he’d play basketball—and after he finished playing, he’d spend hours reading various basketball books. Posters of players were plastered all over his room. “We need to get some handle on this,” his mother told her husband, Dave. While he wasn’t as concerned, he agreed he would talk to the school psychologist. That meeting, however, did not resolve much, and Dave was left wondering if maybe he was the one with a problem. He had never gotten passionately involved in sports. Maybe he was just envious of his son? Maybe he had been too passive as a child and should have had stronger interests? He remembered that he was on the debating team, but never possessed the drive to win over the other team. Okay, he thought to himself, you’d better tolerate your son’s intensity and be patient and see where it leads. A Hoop Fable reveals how basketball provided Larry with a passion for life and gave him a foundation to move toward a successful career—and the lessons the game provided his family along the way.

We see and interact with lost people each day, and the whisper echoes again: "Share your faith. Tell them about Jesus." But fear, busyness, and lack of tools or motivation silence the whisper. Another day, another year, another life passes and we haven't told anyone about the best thing that ever happened to us -- the life-changing message of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Modern-day messages of kindness and acceptance deceive us into thinking we never have to open our mouths and actually share the truth with others in love. And yet the whisper is trying to tell you that you have the key to eternity in your possession. Can you hear it? In Compelled, Dudley Rutherford shares his earnest desire for each and every believer to be equipped and bold with the good news of salvation. He encourages you with inspiring stories of men and women, young and old, who have accepted the irresistible call to share Jesus with everyone they meet. And he provides practical methods to overcome your fears and effectively articulate the message of salvation. Allow these pages to strengthen the gentle nudging in your spirit until it's too loud to ignore -- until you are compelled to tell others about the hope you've found.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime might not pay, but for Tracie, criminals pay the bills?if she can catch them. This is an anthology of the first four erotic, darkly noir, and sometimes romantic cases of Tracie Dumas, the world?s sexiest bounty hunter. Her personal and business relationship with Johnny and her struggle to make it as a bounty hunter, are exciting challenges. This collection includes: A SMALL TATTOO, DISAPPEARING ACT, WORKING ROUGH STREETS, and A STRANGE WEEK. ~~~~~ PG Excerpt ~~~~~ It was my first time in the bar and I didn't know anything about Alice or Johnny when I walked in. If I'd been after them, I'd have known everything, but I was there following a lead. An informant had told me, for his usual fee, he'd seen someone who looked like the woman I was trying to track down tending bar there. He'd talked with her. It was an unlikely story, but I believed him because he admitted that he'd hit on her and struck out. And I had no other leads. "The girl's a sexy platinum blonde," he'd told me. "Sharp tongue, though." "I'm not asking you to sell her to me," I told him. "I just need to be able to recognize her, the way she looks now." I wanted a better description, but he was the kind of guy that didn't see much more than a girl's body, and even more so when the girl turned him down. That left me with a name, Suzy, probably fake, and the address of the bar. I hoped the name Suzy was fake. The girl I was looking for was named Charlotte. Charlotte Mostra, to be complete. In my line of work, I don't often find myself looking for women. Mostly it's men. That probably sounds weird, but keep in mind I'm talking about my work. On my own time I like guys and hot sex. But when I'm working, I'm a bounty hunter. And women don't seem to skip bail as often as men or get in the kind of trouble that someone bothers to put up a reward for them. Missing persons stuff, sure, but Charlotte had her own wanted poster and in my experience that was rare. I'm good at my work. I think women have an advantage in this trade because it doesn't matter if they attract attention. It can even help. When a strange woman comes into a bar or club the first thought in their minds is not that they were followed. It helps even more than I don't look threatening. At five two and around 105, the menace factor doesn't enter into things. And I try to look good as that gets men thinking about me without wondering what I might do for a living. I'd lie about it anyway. People get turned off when they learn you're a bounty hunter. It sounds sleazy. Maybe it is. But it pays the bills most of the time and gives me a rush. Normally my prey are men. They've skipped out on child support or jumped bail, that sort of thing. Tracking a woman was a different kind of challenge. You have to think differently when you put yourself in the high heels of a female fugitive. But as with anyone on the run, the best place to start was with why they were running. Now this Charlotte had lots of reasons for running. Several hundred thousand, dull green reasons, as a matter of fact. She'd been the driver during an armored car robbery. The guys with the guns knocked it over and put the money in the getaway car. Before they knew what was happening, the lovely Charlotte drove away, leaving the others standing in the road. So, the police, the insurance company, and two of her fellow crooks who hadn't been caught, all had an interest in learning the whereabouts of Charlotte and the lucrative proceeds of the crime. The insurance company put up a nice bounty for her and a second one for the loot. Seeing that I collected those bounties was my priority. Charlotte was smart. The cops I talked to thought she might even have been the brains for the operation, that she'd set it up from the beginning to skip out with the money leaving the others as a distraction for the law. After all, they had guns, and she didn't. But she did have the money?every last penny of it.
Book Synopsis The Immortality of Influence: by : Salome Thomas-El
Download or read book The Immortality of Influence: written by Salome Thomas-El and published by Dafina. This book was released on 2010-02-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salome Thomas-EL, award-winning educator and the highly-praised author of I Choose to Stay, has helped hundreds of troubled children get into magnet high schools, major colleges, and universities. Yet he still finds himself devastated by the long-ago death of a promising student named Willow Briggs. Salome worked with and consistently encouraged this troubled boy, who ultimately became one of the school's top chess players and students. But when Willow moved on to high school, he found no real positive influences. He struggled academically and was murdered on a street corner at the age of sixteen. More than any other factor, Willow's death launched Salome Thomas-EL on his mission to be a positive influence, and to encourage all of us to set the best example possible for the young people in our lives. The Immortality of Influence is a refreshing, common-sense roadmap to helping kids achieve their dreams in which Thomas-EL movingly describes the methods he has used to help his students succeed. It all started in Vaux Middle School, where he began a chess club to teach boys and girls how to think critically and resolve conflicts with their minds instead of their fists. Not only did his students win eight national championships and become local heroes, they also scored high on the SATs and got into top colleges. When Thomas-EL found himself faced with kids who didn't exercise or eat well, he started a summer program in which the students walked to museums and other cultural events around the city. Recognizing the importance of exposing kids to the world outside their own neighborhoods, he took fifteen African-American students to rural Vermont, where they interacted with white children their age and discovered how much they had in common. All of these students were later accepted to the best magnet high schools. These are just a few examples of what can happen when kids are mentored in a positive way--not only at home, but in the community at large. For parents, guardians, educators--anyone who wants the best for kids, this book is an essential, inspirational reference. It's all about making a difference--not just for today, but forever. Sometimes, it only takes one special person to set a child on the right path, but more often, it does indeed take a village. The Immortality of Influence will inspire you to band together with other caring adults and start making a difference--now.
