Book excerpt: Nightclubs are closing at such a rate in Britain - down from an estimated 4,200 in 1994 to around 1,700 in 2017 - that they could soon be a relic of a bygone age. This book is set in the period from the mid 1970's to the mid 1980's. The country was emerging from a time of grim austerity with industrial strikes and the imposed 3-day working week. People still needed to enjoy themselves, though, and with pubs back then closing at 11 pm, many found their fun at the nightclub during this golden age of disco. What was it like to be a part of it all? This is an account of one young man's journey through clubland, experiencing the glamour and hedonism, and inevitably finding love. But, there was also the harsh life behind the scenes: the daily grind, constant insecurity, and the threat of physical violence. With its tales of love and laughter, tears and tragedy, this is a unique insight into a social and cultural aspect of British life that could soon be gone forever.

Book excerpt: You've just boarded a plane. You've loaded your phone with your favorite podcasts, but before you can pop in your earbuds, disaster strikes: The guy in the next seat starts telling you all about something crazy that happened to him--in great detail. This is the unwelcome storyteller, trying to convince a reluctant audience to care about his story. We all hate that guy, right? But when you tell a story (any kind of story: a novel, a memoir, a screenplay, a stage play, a comic, or even a cover letter), you become the unwelcome storyteller. So how can you write a story that audiences will embrace? The answer is simple: Remember what it feels like to be that jaded audience. Tell the story that would win you over, even if you didn't want to hear it. The Secrets of Story provides comprehensive, audience-focused strategies for becoming a master storyteller. Armed with the Ultimate Story Checklist, you can improve every aspect of your fiction writing with incisive questions like these: • Concept: Is the one-sentence description of your story uniquely appealing? • Character: Can your audience identify with your hero? • Structure and Plot: Is your story ruled by human nature? • Scene Work: Does each scene advance the plot and reveal character through emotional reactions? • Dialogue: Is your characters' dialogue infused with distinct personality traits and speech patterns based on their lives and backgrounds? • Tone: Are you subtly setting, resetting, and upsetting expectations? • Theme: Are you using multiple ironies throughout the story to create meaning? To succeed in the world of fiction and film, you have to work on every aspect of your craft and satisfy your audience. Do both--and so much more--with The Secrets of Story.

Book excerpt: “The end is coming….” A murdered legionnaire’s final words are a promise and a threat. For Harley Nearwater, a wandering nomad in the New Age of Discovery, those words serve as prophesy for a future rushing to engulf him. Humanity has cured its ills and lost its soul, but for the cunning, the ruthless, the brutal, there are so many possibilities. For Harley Nearwater, the world is ripe for the picking. While civilization lives in a digital paradise he fights to survive in the Wilderness, taking what he wants, killing when it suits him and answering to no one. Until the day his murder of a Federation legionnaire alters his course forever. “The end is coming,” she whispers. The Earth has grown tired of meddlesome humanity and Harley has put pieces into play before their time. His inclination for killing has upset the balance between good and evil and nature itself. For that, there will be a reckoning. The Earth rages. Humanity is hunted.

Book excerpt: Twentieth Century Drifter: The Life of Marty Robbins is the first biography of this legendary country music artist and NASCAR driver who scored sixteen number-one hits and two Grammy awards. Yet even with fame and fortune, Marty Robbins always yearned for more. Drawing from personal interviews and in-depth research, biographer Diane Diekman explains how Robbins saw himself as a drifter, a man always searching for self-fulfillment and inner peace. Born Martin David Robinson to a hardworking mother and an abusive alcoholic father, he never fully escaped the insecurities burned into him by a poverty-stricken nomadic childhood in the Arizona desert. In 1947 he got his first gig as a singer and guitar player. Too nervous to talk, the shy young man walked onstage singing. Soon he changed his name to Marty Robbins, cultivated his magnetic stage presence, and established himself as an entertainer, songwriter, and successful NASCAR driver. For fans of Robbins, NASCAR, and classic country music, Twentieth Century Drifter: The Life of Marty Robbins is a revealing portrait of this well-loved, restless entertainer, a private man who kept those who loved him at a distance.

Book excerpt: In Shifts of Power: Modern Chinese Thought and Society, Luo Zhitian brings together nine essays to explore the causes and consequences of various shifts of power in modern Chinese society, including the shift from scholars to intellectuals, from the traditional state to the modern state, and from the people to society. Adopting a microhistorical approach, Luo situates these shifts at the intersection of social change and intellectual evolution in the midst of modern China’s culture wars with the West. Those culture wars produced new problems for China, but also provided some new intellectual resources as Chinese scholars and intellectuals grappled with the collisions and convergences of old and new in late Qing and early Republican China.

Book excerpt: Our Choices, Our Lives: Unapologetic Writings on Abortion A riveting collection of writings, Our Choices, Our Lives challenges those who reduce abortion to "pro" and "anti," and reveals the many faces of the abortion issue. The anthology explores the people behind the political question: Should abortion be legal? Our Choices, Our Lives takes the abortion issue to a new level. Women's personal testimonies about their abortion experiences reveal the liberating, sometimes poignant, reality that can accompany the choice to end an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy. Women's health care workers, from counselors to doctors, compassionately bear witness to women's abortion experiences, and provide patients with medical and educational services in an environment that can be physically and emotionally dangerous to both themselves and their patients. Our Choices, Our Lives concludes with the critical deconstruction of the state of abortion politics by political and religious activists and outlines the political, social, economic and moral imperatives behind protecting a woman's right to choose abortion.
