Book excerpt: Enter the world of Jillian Barrister and those who orbit around her-Clay, David, Norma and Dr. Allison-players in a riveting drama of love and loss, happiness and anguish, innocence and guilt. It is Dr. Allison's task to study and understand his patients through the process of analysis, and Jillian is no exception-or is she? The more deeply he probes, the closer he comes to unearthing the childhood tragedy that has isolated her from herself and others, and could topple the precarious defenses of her internal world-a fragile but guarded state of consciousness in which the past is always just beneath the surface.

Book excerpt: In 2004, four sisters embarked upon a cross-country road-trip to fulfill a promise to uncover a long buried tragedy in their mother Demi’s, past. They went on the journey in their mother’s old school bus used in 1969 on her trip to Woodstock with a group of friends. The flawed and imperfect sisters’ trip crosses the country and introduces them to characters from Demi’s past. These characters will provide the clues and sometimes the answers. The road-trip hinges on flashback sequences from the character’s collective memories of the political upheavals of the late 60’s and early 70’s. The ripple effects of those upheavals impacted that group and changed their lives forever! How can they solve Demi’s mystery and an uncovered conspiracy? How does an old key, a hidden map, a missing girl, a Weather Underground bombing, an unfound treasure and a couple of murders all connect?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solemnly Swear is retired U.S. Air Force Officer Joe Porrazzo's first, in hopefully a long line, of suspense novels. "Mr. Porrazzo's portrayal of the lead character Alex Porter gives the reader an instant connection with Porter's well-developed and believable military personality. The reader bonds with Alex, a trustworthy and incorruptible friend, and Porrazzo gives us more than enough reasons to care about what happens to him. Alex is a former U.S. Air Force special agent whose retired life isn't far removed from the dangers of his previous life as an American soldier. Riddled with guilt over the untimely death of his wife, troubled by nightmares associated with witnessing a grizzly crime scene involving a powerful mafia boss, and struggling with the obstacles of fatherhood, still Alex stands strong and resilient against the pressures of the untouchable antagonist; mobster Vince Vionelli. Mr. Porrazzo's thought-provoking storyline draws the reader in with one of the most impossible dilemmas a person (fictional or otherwise) can ever find themselves in doing what's morally right no matter what the cost or protecting oneself and the ones we love. The narration is smooth and easy to read. The dialogue is refreshingly realistic. And each chapter ends with just enough enticement to make the novel impossible to put down. If you're in the mood for a good mystery/thriller, I highly recommend, Joe Porrazzo's Solemnly Swear. The plot is unique the pace is fast the direction is unpredictable and the final pages are shocking. What a great book with which to spend a weekend! Book excerpt: ONE OF TODAY'S FINEST MYSTERY WRITERS." —Carolyn Hart A VIRGIN ISLAND LOSES ITS INNOCENCE There is no love lost between novelist/sometime sleuth E.J. Pugh and her three sisters: four high-strung Texas redheads who have made sibling rivalry an art form. In an attempt to ease their stretched-thin family ties, the ladies and their respective mates have rented a vacation home together on the Caribbean island of St. John. But reconciliation must take a back seat to crime detection when a waterlogged corpse is discovered clogging up the cistern of their stunning beachfront house. The body belongs to a former employee of the dentist husband of sister Liz, which leads the local police captain to surmise that the killer is a member of the clan—especially after an exploding pleasure boat and other untimely "accidents" rapidly raise the body count up from one. E.J., however, is not convinced. And, to the chagrin of her loving, long-suffering hubby, Willis, she's determined to salvage what's left of their vacation by exposing whomever is rapidly turning a family gathering into a wake in paradise. "E.J. is a Central Texas housewife and author who simply cannot keep her nose out of other people's business. If she's your friend, you couldn't ask for better. If she's on your case, you might just as well give up...The E.J. Pugh mysteries are among my favorites." —Austin American-Statesman

Book excerpt: When his wife finds the body of an Army veteran in the lake, it is inevitable that former cop, now unofficial P.I. Rushmore McKenzie will get enmeshed in a complicated case of possible murder. It all starts with the body in the water—on what should be the first boat day of the season, McKenzie’s wife Nina finds a dead Army vet. As the dock owner and the insurance companies claim that it was suicide, despite the deceased, E.J. Woods, having no obvious reason to kill himself, his widow starts acting suspiciously. McKenzie finds himself pulled into the fight when Naveah, the victim’s daughter, convinced her father was murdered, asks him to investigate. Further complicating the situation are uncooperative boaters, allegations of PTSD, and the simple fact that there was no reason for E.J. to be in the water. McKenzie’s investigation unearths not only the petty squabbles surrounding the lake and its dock, but details of her father’s past that Naveah is perhaps better off not knowing. With Nina haunted by dreams of the body and the legal fight over cause of death becoming increasingly nasty, McKenzie may be the only one interested in finding justice for E.J.— and uncovering the truth before another person dies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyaluronan biology is being recognized as an important regulator of cancer progression. Paradoxically, both hyaluronan (HA) and hyaluronidases, the enzymes that eliminate HA, have also been correlated with cancer progression. Hyaluronan, a long-chain polymer of the extracellular matrix, opens up tissue spaces through which cancer cells move and metastasize. It also confers motility upon cells through interactions of cell-surface HA with the cytoskeleton. Embryonic cells in the process of movement and proliferation use the same strategy. It is an example of how cancer cells have commandeered normal cellular processes for their own survival and spread. There are also parallels between cancer and wound healing, cancer occasionally being defined as a wound that does not heal. The growing body of literature regarding this topic has recently progressed from describing the association of hyaluronan and hyaluronidase expression associated with different cancers, to understanding the mechanisms that drive tumor cell activation, proliferation, drug resistance, etc. No one source, however, discusses hyaluronan synthesis and catabolism, as well as the factors that regulate the balance. This book will offer a comprehensive summary and cutting-edge insight into Hyaluronan biology, the role of the HA receptors, the hyaluronidase enzymes that degrade HA, as well as HA synthesis enzymes and their relationship to cancer. - Offers a comprehensive summary and cutting-edge insight into Hyaluronan biology, the role of the HA receptors, the hyaluronidase enzymes that degrade HA, as well as HA synthesis enzymes and their relationship to cancer - Chapters are written by the leading international authorities on this subject, from laboratories that focus on the investigation of hyaluronan in cancer initiation, progression, and dissemination - Focuses on understanding the mechanisms that drive tumor cell activation, proliferation, and drug resistance

Book excerpt: In the first half of the 19th century, the safeguarding of the health of the enslaved workers became a central concern for plantation owners and colonial administrators in the Danish West Indies. With the end of the slave trade, the longstanding excess mortality in the hardworking enslaved population became a crucial problem for the colony because the slaves could no longer be replaced. This book explores the health conditions of the enslaved workers and the health policies initiated by planters and the colonial government. The investigation reveals that, in a comparative Caribbean perspective, Danish West Indian health policies were often quite unique and efficient, but also that the health of the enslaved was a contested field, showing an ongoing power struggle between the planters, the colonial administration, and the slaves themselves.
