Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A HARROWING JOURNEY INSIDE THE HIDDEN WORLD OF DRUG CARTELS BY ONE OF THE TOP CRIMINAL INFORMANTS IN U.S. LAW ENFORCEMENT HISTORY. The men he put behind bars know him as Roman Caribe or one of the dozens of other aliases he has used undercover. His handlers in the DEA, ICE, and FBI know him as Confidential Source Ninety-Six, or C.S. 96, named for the year he confronted the sins of his life atop a massive drug distribution ring and flipped, becoming law enforcement's secret weapon. In Confidential Source Ninety-Six, Caribe tells the extraordinary story of his transformation into America's most successful informant in terms of total narcotics seized--from the years of trafficking cocaine and marijuana across the U.S. for a terrifying drug lord, eventually becoming that man's number two, to his decision to defect and trade sides. In his first mission, Caribe set his sights on his onetime boss's brutal operation. In his next, he broke all protocol and made a daring foray into the notorious Fuentes Cartel, where he took down a family that was smuggling tons of drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border. As Caribe launched his career as a confidential source, finding his faith and seeking to finally do right by his stoic wife, Inez, and his four children, his marriage became stressed in new ways, the risks to his family unimaginable if he made a single mistake on the job. He found himself looking over his shoulder every day, knowing that with each drug ring or kingpin he destroyed, he made another dangerous enemy. For as long as he continued the high stakes work, he would survive on the cunning of his tradecraft and his ability to improvise in the most terrifying circumstances. Unfolding in Southern California mansions, makeshift DEA trailers deep in the redwood forest, drug fronts in Spanish Harlem, fast-food parking lots where kilograms of cocaine and heroin change hands, and around the dinner table where Caribe began mentoring at-risk youth to help them avoid the mistakes he made, Confidential Source Ninety-Six is the epic saga of one man's quest to redeem himself and a thrilling look at the law enforcement battle that rages in the shadows of our nation.

Book excerpt: **Winner of the American Book Fest Best Book Award in "Health: Aging/50+"** This invaluable guide will help the historical number of eightysomethings live fulfilled, happy lives long into their twilight years. Personal stories illustrate how real people in their eighties are living and how they make sense of their lives. Old age is not what it used to be. For the first time ever, most people in the United States are living into their eighties. The first guide of its kind, Eightysomethings changes our understanding of old age with an upbeat and emotionally savvy view of the uncharted territory of the last stage of life. With insight and humor, Dr. Katharine Esty describes the series of dramatic and difficult transitions that eightysomethings usually experience and how, despite their losses, they so often find themselves unexpectedly happy. Living into one’s eighties doesn’t have to mean declining health and loneliness: Dr. Esty shows readers how to embrace—and thrive during—the later stages of life. Based on her more than 120 interviews around the country, Esty explores the lives of ordinary eightysomethings—their attitudes, activities, secrets, worries, purposes, and joys. Esty adds her wisdom and perspective to this multi-dimensional look at being old as a social psychologist, a practicing psychotherapist, and as an eighty-four-year-old widow living in a retirement community. Eightysomethings is a must-read for people in their eighties, and also for their families. Adult children—often bewildered by their aging parents—need a wise guide like Eightysomethings to help them navigate their parents’ last stage of life with real-world guidelines and conversation starters. Readers, young and old alike, will find this first-of-its-kind book eye-opening, comforting, and filled with practical tips.

Book excerpt: Barefoot on Baker Street is set in late Victorian London where a life of crime is the only way to escape poverty and servitude for one bright young workhouse orphan. The narrative follows Red on her incredible life-journey as it twists and turns through poverty, riches, infatuation, loss and love. A dramatic escape from the workhouse at thirteen propels Red into a world of slum housing, street gangs, prostitution and petty crime as the rapidly expanding city groans under the weight of the industrial revolution. A chance meeting with the mysterious and eccentric Sherlock Holmes prompts an infatuation which cuts through her street-wise bravado. Red's blossoming criminal career also brings her to the attention of Professor James Moriarty. An autistic savant riddled with obsessive compulsions, Moriarty is a dangerous criminal who draws Red into his life and onto a collision course with Holmes.

Book excerpt: The American writer and Nobel Prize laureate, William Faulkner is primarily known for his novels set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, based on Lafayette County, Mississippi, where he spent most of his life. One of the most celebrated writers of twentieth-century literature, Faulkner was an important exponent of the modernist technique. His masterpieces ‘The Sound and the Fury, ‘As I Lay Dying’ and ‘Light in August’ are celebrated for their depth of characterisation, structural resourcefulness and social notation. Book excerpt: To reveal too much of the plot would be a discourtesy to the reader, for this is a book which moves on the wheels of breathless suspense. It may be said, however, that one day in 1905 eleven-year-old Lucius Priest—certain to become one of the most cherished striplings in literature—“borrowed” his grandfather’s automobile, with the tacit connivance of two older friends: the part-Indian Boon Hogganbeck and Ned William McCaslin, a Negro. In that nostalgic day, their ensuing expedition in the car from Jefferson, Mississippi to Memphis called for the fearless hardihood of pioneers. The account of the heroic trio’s journey is as exciting as it is hilarious—but it is just a pale prelude to the adventures that await them in Memphis.

Book excerpt: Ebony, Ebony. Are you ok? I heard you scream. Ebony slowly begins to stir. Her mother stands over her with a concerned look on her face. Ebony sits up and rubs the lengthy scar on her right forearm. What a dream. I havent dreamt of how I got this scar in years. Ebony groggily looks at her mother. Did I scream out loud? She embarrassingly inquires in that husky morning voice people have when just waking up. Mildred starts toward her daughters closet. No dear, you didnt. Now please, pull yourself together. We do have a funeral to attend. Ebonys mother searches through her closet. She keeps a firm grip on her emotions during times like this but she couldnt help a tear streaming down her face as she pulls her daughters black satin dress out of the closet. Mildred wipes the tear off her cheek before turning to face her daughter. Here, you can wear this. Ill just put it over on the chair. She retrieves Ebonys black two inch heel shoes from under the bed. They are the appropriate kind. She places the shoes in front of the chair. I know this is a trying time for you. Mildred says as she sits at the foot of the bed. I just want you to know that your father and I are here for you; no matter what. Ebony begins to tear. Mildred moves closer to her daughter and comforts her. Its ok, baby. Go ahead, let it out. She says as Ebony sobs even harder. I wish I could take all your pain away. Just then, a small black bird perches outside of the window. With no sunshine in sight, its shadow slowly creeps into the cozy little room.
