Book Synopsis Calling the Shots by : Jennifer A. Reich
Download or read book Calling the Shots written by Jennifer A. Reich and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increasing number of parents are refusing vaccines, believing vaccines pose greater risks than benefits to their children. Given the certainty of the medical community that vaccines are safe and effective, many wonder how such parents, who are most likely to be white, have high levels of education, and have the greatest access to healthcare services and resources, could hold such beliefs? Reich has been following the issue of vaccine refusal for over a decade, and examines how parents who opt out of vaccinations see their decision: what they fear, what they hope to control, and what they believe is in their child's best interest. -- adapted from back cover

Book Synopsis Human Subjects Research after the Holocaust by : Sheldon Rubenfeld
Download or read book Human Subjects Research after the Holocaust written by Sheldon Rubenfeld and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An engaging, compelling and disturbing confrontation with evil ...a book that will be transformative in its call for individual and collective moral responsibility." – Michael A. Grodin, M.D., Professor and Director, Project on Medicine and the Holocaust, Elie Wiesel Center for Judaic Studies, Boston University Human Subjects Research after the Holocaust challenges you to confront the misguided medical ethics of the Third Reich personally, and to apply the lessons learned to contemporary human subjects research. While it is comforting to believe that Nazi physicians, nurses, and bioscientists were either incompetent, mad, or few in number, they were, in fact, the best in the world at the time, and the vast majority participated in the government program of “applied biology.” They were not coerced to behave as they did—they enthusiastically exploited widely accepted eugenic theories to design horrendous medical experiments, gas chambers and euthanasia programs, which ultimately led to mass murder in the concentration camps. Americans provided financial support for their research, modeled their medical education and research after the Germans, and continued to perform unethical human subjects research even after the Nuremberg Doctors’ Trial. The German Medical Association apologized in 2012 for the behavior of its physicians during the Third Reich. By examining the medical crimes of human subjects researchers during the Third Reich, you will naturally examine your own behavior and that of your colleagues, and perhaps ask yourself "If the best physicians and bioscientists of the early 20th century could do evil while believing they were doing good, can I be certain that I will never do the same?"
Book Synopsis The Future of Nursing by : Institute of Medicine
Download or read book The Future of Nursing written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-02-08 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

Book excerpt: Nursing Through Shot and Shell is the previously unpublished memoir of Beatrice Hopkinson, who served in France as a Territorial Nursing Sister from 1917-19. Beatrice worked close to the front line at casualty clearing stations, and her poignant account reveals the intense strain: 'I never realized what the word ÒdutyÓ meant until this War. To stand at one's post, never flinching and trying to keep the boys cheerful; all the time wondering when our time would come.' ??The memoir reveals the lighter side of wartime life, with entertainments, travel and enduring friendships. Beatrice also describes the practical realities of war in vivid detail Ð sleeping in dug outs, dodging bombs and avoiding rats 'as big as a good sized kitten'. A fascinating, close-up view of one women's life during wartime.

This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you're a nurse, or want to become one, you already know how incredibly fulfilling the profession can be. With skill and compassion, nurses save lives. There's nothing more gratifying than helping someone who trusts and depends on you to make it through a difficult time. Nursing can also be stressful - but that stress can be ameliorated by working in a great team, or exacerbated by passive-aggressiveness communication or hurt feelings. Keeping our patients safe and providing the most optimal outcomes depends entirely on our relationships with each other. Nurses who learn this material will be as confident in their communication skills as they are in their clinical skills per the AACN standards. The world needs nurse leaders who are bold, valiant, audacious and courageous. In "The Dauntless Nurse: Communication Confidence Builder" you'll learn to pro-actively address and eliminate the trivial and unnecessary frustrations that distract and undermine your confidence. You'll learn how to professionally respond to a multitude of human gestures: how to join a new group, communicate professionally, and become a master in constructively handling conflict and confrontation. Filled with tools and tips on how to communicate assertively and understand workplace culture, this book gives nurses the knowledge and skills needed to confidently address experiences and behaviors that leave them feeling undermined or uncertain. Understanding why these behaviors occur diminishes their effect. Knowing how to respond hard-wires your muscle memory. And reading scenarios of how other nurses have effectively handled similar situations builds the confidence that is characteristic of a Dauntless Nurse - you!
