Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hypersonic viscous pressure interaction is treated by the development of a set of equations valid throughout the boundary layer, shock-wave structure and inviscid core. Primary interest is concerned with the nature of the leading edge continuum merged layer in which the shock wave and boundary layer are indistinguishable. Due to the parabolic nature of the equations, finite-difference solutions are attainable. The flow over a flat plate at zero incidence, as well as angle of attack, was considered. Velocity and state variable distributions across the viscous layer depict the formation of an outer shock wave and inner constant pressure boundary layer. The calculated values of surface pressure, heat transfer and shock jump conditions were at first significantly below the values predicted by strong interaction theory. Agreement was quite good downstream of the merged layer where Rankine-Hugoniot jump conditions were satisfied to within 8%. (Author).

Book Synopsis Slender Bodies of Minimum Drag in Hypersonic Viscous Flow by : Harold Mirels
Download or read book Slender Bodies of Minimum Drag in Hypersonic Viscous Flow written by Harold Mirels and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypersonic viscous flow about slender cones, wedges, and 3/4 power law bodies is considered. Body thickness ratios leading to minimum drag are determined subject to constraints of fixed base, fixed volume, or fixed surface area. It is assumed that the shocks are strong and that the fluid is ideal. It is found that minimum drag occurs in a flow region where viscous interaction and, for axisymmetric bodies, transverse curvature must be taken into account. Numerical results are given for optimum thickness ratio and minimum drag as a function of altitude. (Author).
Book Synopsis An Analytical Investigation of Viscous Shock-Layer Flow Near the Leading Edge of Slender Bodies Under Low-Density Hypersonic Conditions by : J. R. Maus

This book was released on 1973 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical investigation and a numerical procedure are presented for calculating the fully viscous shock-layer flow near the sharp leading edge of both two-dimensional and axisymmetric slender bodies uses an implicit finite-difference technique in conjunction with wall slip boundary conditions; the shock structure is determined as part of the resulting solution. The mathematical model involves a more complete and accurate set of governing equations and boundary conditions. (Modified author abstract).
Book Synopsis On Hypersonic Viscous Flow Near a Sharp Leading Edge by : Richard W. Garvine
Download or read book On Hypersonic Viscous Flow Near a Sharp Leading Edge written by Richard W. Garvine and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical inquiry is made into the high speed viscous flow past a sharp-edged flat plate whose surface is aligned with the oncoming flow. Basic information is sought concerning the fundamental nature of the flow field in regions near the leading edge. The role of upstream conditions is found to be fundamental. Study is made of the viscous layer region on the two-dimensional flat plate ahead of the strong interaction region. The Navier-Stokes equations are applied to the flow up to the point where continum treatments are no longer justifiable. Two initial velocity profiles were assumed in order to examine the details of the theory. Neither form proved to yield realistic flow fields in the light of experimental results. Computations from these two profile forms, however, did serve to bring out the sensitivity of the flow throughout the viscous layer region to initial conditions. It is concluded, in consequence, that the flow cannot be described by similar solutions or other solutions which ignore these initial values. (Author).

Book Synopsis On the Hypersonic Sharp Leading Edge Problem for Bodies Other Than Flat Plates by : Jay M. Solomon
Download or read book On the Hypersonic Sharp Leading Edge Problem for Bodies Other Than Flat Plates written by Jay M. Solomon and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flow near the tip of pointed nosed bodies in hypersonic flight is considered. In particular, the region where continuum concepts are applicable, but where boundary layer theory is no longer valid, is studied using the model proposed by Oguchi for the flat plate problem. Both two-dimensional and axiallysymmetric bodies are considered. Solutions are obtained in the form of expansions valid near the nose tip. The surface pressure is found to approach a finite value as the tip is approached; numerical results for this limit value are obtained for various wall to total temperature ratios and tip semi-vertex angles. (Author).
