Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Playing hymns on the organ is a centuries-old tradition that has been passed down largely through osmosis and guesswork. To address a growing need for more explicit instruction, Forster surveys available resources about hymn playing, and then launches a discussion expounding twenty vital aspects encompassing the art of hymn playing. To equip the organist with a palette of tools for every occasion, he has amassed the expertise of eleven leaders in the world of hymn playing. The panel considers everything from learning and teaching hymns through the instruments and people involved in growing a community of engaged singers within a congregation. The character and artistry of the participants is revealed through frank anecdotes from their collective 300+ years of experience. Here, we learn from David Cherwien, Mark Dwyer, David Erwin, John Ferguson, Peter Jewkes, Stephen Loher, Walden Moore, Bruce Neswick, John Scott, Jeffrey Smith, and Tom Whittemore [Publisher description]

Book Synopsis Hymn-Style Piano Playing by : Robert Kelley
Download or read book Hymn-Style Piano Playing written by Robert Kelley and published by . This book was released on 2019-04-14 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hymn-Style Piano Playing is a collection of studies and teaching pieces to help developing pianists learn to play hymns and chorales at the piano. The music in this book comes from a great diversity of chorale traditions. Orchestral music, sacred and secular choir music, church hymns, national anthems, string quartets, and piano music in chorale style are all included, drawn from five continents. Helpful pedagogical advice is given for the etudes and preparatory literature in the first half of the book, and the second half includes many hymns and chorales from which the teacher and student may select for further study. Nearly all bachelor's degree programs in music education with choral emphasis have a piano proficiency requirement that is satisfied by piano classes, piano lessons, and/or an examination that includes reading chorale-style music. This collection of technical exercises and music is specifically designed to teach the students how to play hymns and chorales in order to satisfy this program requirement. The prerequisites for a course that would use this text are approximately one year of group piano or piano lessons.
