Book excerpt: To maintain the efficiency and competitiveness of industrial products, it is important to rationalize manufacturing process with the aim to increase automation. Oftentimes this is achieved by the application of fluid systems, subdivided in hydraulik and pneumatic systems. With this book the author especially intends to introduce the reader in the principles of hydraulics. Reference is made on the book "Grundlagen der Hydraulik" published by the CARL HANSER-Verlag. This book is in the 7th-edition. The book presented here, offers the possibility to familiarize with the topic of hydraulic in a condensed manner by keeping the time effort limited. This particularly applies for students at universities and technical schools, but it is also a beneficial help for technicans in professional practice who want to refresh their skills in the field of hydraulics. The last chapter the reader will finds ten exercises with a detailed presentation of the solution approach by use of the "step by step"-method. Each step is commented to provide highest clarity of the solution approach.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents key principles of the hydraulics of river basins, with a unique focus on the interplay between stream flows and sediment transport. Addressing a number of basic topics related to the hydraulics of natural waterways, it above all emphasizes applicative aspects in order to provide the reader with a solid grasp of river engineering. The first chapter explores many of the fixed base hydraulic topics that are normally neglected in traditional texts, namely the effects on motion produced by the vegetation and macroroughnesses that characterize many mountain streams. The remaining chapters are devoted entirely to hydraulics with mobile riverbeds and put particular emphasis on inhomogeneous river channels. The book’s approach goes beyond classical treatments, so as to not only introduce readers to the fundamentals of mobile riverbeds, but also enable today’s river engineers to successfully design and maintain natural riverbeds.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hydraulic Principles Governing River and Harbor Construction During his professional career the writer has prepared numerous projects, and has answered many criticisms of the methods employed in the improvement of rivers and harbors. The following pages are derived principally from these sources. In replying to complainants, the author came to the conclusion that there was a commendable interest among the American people in the subject of the improvement of rivers and harbors, and a deplorable ignorance of the fundamental principles governing the flow of water in natural channels. Such is his apology for this publication. The ordinary textbook on hydraulics treats principally of the flow of water in pipes and conduits, and the ordinary engineer is apt to consider a river as merely a large conduit governed by the same laws, ignoring the change in conditions arising from the fact that the walls of a pipe are not affected by the velocity of flow through it, while the channels of a silt-bearing stream expand or contract with every change in the volume of discharge. This fact is ignored also by many writers on river hydraulics, whose textbooks contain more or less elaborate discussions of the formulas which are authoritatively stated as guides for determining the depth in a contracted waterway. In a rock cut, these formulas give as accurate results as they do when applied to a sewer or to a pipe, but in the alluvium of the Mississippi or Missouri rivers, scour caused by the contraction produces a radical change in the hydraulic radius. Water flowing in a river channel is governed by the same immutable laws as when flowing in pipes, but theses laws are so modified in the river by those governing the flow of sediment that effects are produced which are erroneously termed exceptions to general laws. For example if a given pipe is replaced by one of less diameter, the head (slope) must be increased to obtain the same discharge. Book excerpt: This book provides a state-of-the-art review of recent analytical developments on multi-outlets pipe flow hydraulics and alternative hydraulic design concepts. For this purpose, the book presents simple, but sufficiently accurate analytical equations, that can be applied directly without needing any numerical technique to achieve whole hydraulic computations. The analytical procedures explained here give an opportunity for designers to better understand the basic hydraulic principles of multi-outlet pipe flow, and demonstrate their applicability and efficiency to design problems of multi-outlet sub-main lines, covering various design configurations.
