Book excerpt: The hydraulic geometry of the Lower Mississippi River is primarily the product of the action of natural flows acting on the floodplain materials over centuries and millennia to form an alluvial forming a channel. However, the modern channel has been modified by engineered channel improvements performed as part of the Mississippi River and Tributaries (MR & T) project. Channel improvement features include meander cutoffs, levees, diversion structures, bank stabilization, and low training dikes, which have been constructed to enhance flood control, stabilize the channel, and provide sufficient depth for navigation even at times of low water. The shape and form of the modern channel have been further influenced by morphological responses to artificial stabilization and training. Historically, morphological response involved bank erosion, siltation and some recovery of sinuosity lost due to artificial cutoffs, though more recently bank erosion, channel migration and planform evolution have all but ceased as ACM revetments now extend along a great proportion of the banklines. Substantive legislation for the MR & T project, and the initiation of the construction program, began following the catastrophic flood of 1927, and this event marks the start of the modern era in terms of channel form and process in the Lower Mississippi River. Since that time, channel dimensions and geometries have evolved under the influence of natural flows, direct engineering interventions and dynamic adjustment driven by process-response feedback loops linking flow hydraulics and channel morphology. Previous studies have documented the stage and slope adjustments on the Lower Mississippi River, but the associated changes in hydraulic geometry have not yet been fully investigated. In principle, hydraulic geometry analysis could be undertaken using comprehensive and annual hydrographic surveys of the river.

Book excerpt: This report presents a brief description of field and office studies of the hydraulic characteristics of selected cross sections and reaches of the Lower Mississippi River through FY 1966. These studies are a part of the general potamology investigations for improving techniques for stabilizing the bed and banks of the Mississippi River. The general purpose of the previous studies was to analyze the hydraulic factors and elements of the river cross sections, establish allowable limits of width-depth and area-depth relations, and to determine the relation of radii of curvature to width and depth. Since April 1966, more intensive studies have been made of six typical stable, straight, and divided flow reaches. Also, 5 reaches have been selected for detailed studies relating to the effect of existing or proposed dikes. Current objectives of the investigations include a general study of the hydraulic variables relating directly to channel geometry; developing criteria for the design of channel stabilization structures and evaluation and prediction of the effects of existing and proposed channel stabilization structures.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to reanalyze the navigation and flood channels of the Mississippi River by examining the arguments leading up to the series of man-made cutoffs, discussing their construction and illustrating the response of the system to the cutoffs. Engineers in many countries have looked on the Mississippi River cutoff program as one of extreme success but in trying to duplicate river shortening on other rivers have often produced disastrous results. The delicate balance among the hydraulic and geomorphic factors that control river form and river flow is so complex that it is not well understood. It is necessary then that there be as complete an understanding as possible of the response of a river after a single cutoff or a series of cutoffs. (Author).

Book excerpt: A sedimentation and navigation study of the lower Mississippi River, between River Miles 603 and 596 was conducted to study and solve the navigation problems associated with the Mississippi River at White River Confluence. Problems exist when tows navigate in and out of the White River near River mile 599. The outside of Subgrass Bend creates a deep channel with high velocities at the confluence. Several catastrophic events including collisions and sinkings have nearly occurred as a result of the problems indicated in the report. A new lock and dam is currently being constructed on the White River just upstream of the Mississippi River. A physical hydraulic micro model was used to assess 10 structural design alternatives to alleviate or eliminate the navigation problems. The study recommended constructing 7 bendway weirs near the confluence. Flow visualization showed that bendway weirs would redistribute the velocities across the channel. A longitudinal dike and minor realignment of the confluence were also recommended.

Book excerpt: The ultimate purpose of sediment studies is to develop a workable knowledge of the basic principles controlling the transport of sediment in the Lower Mississippi River and to apply this knowledge toward effective and economical stabilization works for flood control and navigation. The more immediate purpose of this report, however, is to present the data that have been collected and analyzed to date (1929-1974) and to show what trends exist in the quantities and sizes of suspended and bed sediments for the Vicksburg District.
