Book excerpt: This progress report summarizes the work done on the project "Hybrid Harmonic Gyrotron Traveling Wave Amplifier" covering the period from March 15, 1994 to October 31,1994. In the past seven and a half months, we have designed a compact harmonic multiplying gyro- TWT amplifier. The device is a threestage tube with the output section running as an fourth harmonic gyro-TWT, the input section running as a fundamental gyro-TWT, and the middle section operating at the second harmonic of the cyclotron frequency. Radiation is suppressed by servers between the sections. The electron beam which drives the tube is produced by a magnetron injection gun. (MM).

Book excerpt: A gyrotron traveling-wave amplifier (gyro-TWT) with the high-power and broad-band capabilities is considered as a turn-on key for next generation high-resolution radar. The book presents the most advanced theory, methods and physics in a gyro-TWT. The most challenging problem of instability competition has been for the first time addressed in a focused and systematic way and reported via concise states and vivid pictures. The book is likely to meet the interest of researchers and engineers in radar and microwave technology, who would like to study the gyro-TWTs and to promote its application in millimeter-wave radars. A gyrotron oscillator experiment with an overmoded open confocal resonator was also run at a peak power of up to 83 kW at 136 GHz with an efficiency of 16%. The gyrotron oscillator experiment had excellent mode stability which makes an oversized quasioptical open confocal resonator a candidate for use in high frequency millimeter and sub-millimeter wave gyrotrons. A second harmonic confocal gyrotron experiment was also tried at 280 GHz but the poor quality electron beam prevented the generation of the second harmonic, however, the stronger fundamental mode interaction was suppressed thus validating the advantages of using confocal resonators in high harmonic gyrotrons to suppress the stronger fundamental interaction. The experiments on three millimeter wave VEDs with two novel kinds of highly oversized interaction structures described in this work have demonstrated a novel technique for building high power (> 1 kW) high frequency (> 100 GHz) VEDs.

This book was released on 1978 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cyclotron maser interaction in a waveguide structure at the harmonics of the cyclotron frequencies has been studied in detail both analytically and with numerical simulations. An idealized cold beam, single wave model has been assumed and investigated using the relativistic Vlasov and Maxwell equations. Analytical scaling relations for the growth rate and efficiency have been derived and extensive simulation data obtained. Emphasis has been placed on methods of parameter optimization for maximizing beam to wave energy conversion efficiency. Beam frame efficiencies in the vicinity of 20% and 10% have been found for the third and fourth cyclotron harmonics, respectively. These results are capable of yielding preliminary design data for gyrotron traveling wave amplifiers. However, it should be noted that a number of important practical problems such as competition between spurious modes have not been considered in the context of the present single wave analysis. Furthermore, requirements on magnetic field uniformity and electron thermal spread become more stringent as cyclotron harmonic number increases and thus the realization of suitable experimental conditions may be expected to become increasingly difficult. Book excerpt: The design and experimental study of a 35-GHz gyrotron-traveling-wave tube (gyro-TWT) amplifier operating in the circular TE01 mode at the fundamental cyclotron harmonic are presented. The interaction circuit in this experiment consisted of a new type of ceramic loading that provided the required loss for stable operation. A saturated peak power of 137 kW was measured at 34.1 GHz, corresponding to a saturated gain of 47.0 dB and an efficiency of 17%, with a -3-dB bandwidth of 1.11 GHz (3.3%). Peak output powers in the range of 102.1 to 148.6kW with -3-dB bandwidths of 1.26 and 0.94 GHz, respectively, were measured by varying the operating parameters. The gyro-TWT was found to be zero-drive stable at these operating points, demonstrating that ceramic loading is a highly effective means of suppressing spurious oscillations in gyro-TWTs. This type of ceramic loading has the added advantage of being compatible with high average power operation.

The successful operation of this high frequency gyrotron suggests that overmoded PBG resonators can also be used in conventional slow-wave devices to build moderate power (few hundreds of Watts) VEDs in the millimeter and sub-millimeter wave regime for a variety of applications. Book excerpt: The focus of our Tri-Service University Research Program in Vacuum Electronics has been on basic research issues associated with operating harmonic gyrotron devices as high-power, coherent millimeter-wave amplifiers. Substantial theoretical and experimental progress has been achieved. We introduced the marginal stability design (MSD) procedure(1) for achieving stability in high-performance gyro-TWT's. We also concluded the initial tests of the high power, second-armonic TE21 gyro-TWT amplifier which is based on the MSD procedure and the novel concept that harmonic operation is capable of significantly increasing the output power because the start-oscillation beam current is much higher for the relatively weak harmonic interaction. Indeed, the second-harmonic gyro-TWT amplifier's unprecedented output power of 207 kW exceeded the previous record-level of 120 kW, which was produced by a first-harmonic gyro-TWT. Our amplifier yielded an efficiency of 13%, a saturated gain of 16 dB with a bandwidth of 2% and was stable for zero rf input power. (MM).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As unique sources of coherent high-power, microwave, and millimeter-wave radiation, gyrotrons are an essential part of the hunt for controlled fusion. Presently, gyrotrons are actively used for electron cyclotron resonance plasma heating and current drive in various controlled fusion reactors. These sources have been under development in many countries for more than forty years. In spite of their widespread use, however, there is as yet no single book to introduce non-specialists to this vital field. Now Gregory S. Nusinovich, an early pioneer of the gyrotron and widely regarded today as the world's leading authority on the subject, explains the fundamental physical principles upon which gyrotrons and related devices operate. Nusinovich first sets forth some "rules of thumb" that allow readers to understand gyrotron operation in simple terms. He then explores the fundamentals of the general theory of gyrotrons and offers an overview of the various types of gyro-devices, including gyromonotrons, gyroklystrons, gyro-traveling-wave tubes, and gyrotwystrons. He explains not only the theory, linear and nonlinear, but also the practical challenges that users of such devices face. This book will be of interest to undergraduate and graduate students as well as to those who develop gyrotrons or who use them in various applications. It should also appeal to plasma physicists interested in charged-particle dynamics, as well as to applied physicists needing to know more about micro- and millimeter-wave technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it is one of the oldest sectors of electronics and now somewhat taken for granted, radio frequency transmission literally changed our world. Today, it is still the backbone of myriad applications, from broadcasting to electronic counter-measures. The wide variety of hardware in use means that those working in the field must be familiar with a multitude of principles and applications, but finding an up-to-date, comprehensive source for this background material has been difficult, if not impossible. The RF Transmission Systems Handbook addresses the underlying concepts, operation, and maintenance of high-power RF devices, transmission lines, and antennas for broadcast, scientific, and industrial use. Focusing on devices and systems that produce more than one kilowatt of output power, the handbook explores the following major topics: Applications: The common uses of radio frequency energy Fundamental principles: The basic technologies, concepts, and techniques used in RF transmission Power vacuum devices: The principles and applications of gridded vacuum tubes and microwave power devices Solid-state power devices: The operating parameters of semiconductor-based power devices RF components and transmission lines: The operation of hardware used to combine and conduct RF power Antenna systems: The different types of antennas and their basic operating parameters Troubleshooting: Basic troubleshooting techniques and the operation of important test instruments Contrary to the perceptions of many, RF technology remains a dynamic field that continues to advance to higher power levels and higher frequencies. Those who specify, install, and maintain RF equipment will welcome this reference that uniquely serves their needs.
