Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Giraffe-Hunters No one who has written books for the young during the present century ever had so large a circle of readers as Captain Mayne Reid, or ever was so well fitted by circumstances to write the books by which lie is chiefly known. His life, which was an adventurous one, was ripened with the experience of two Continents, and his temperament which was an ardent one, reflected the traits of two races Irish by birth, he was American in his sympathies with the people of the New World, whose acquaintance he made at an early period, among whom he lived for years, and whose battles he helped to win. He was probably more familiar with the Southern and Western portion of the United States forty years ago than any native-born American of that time. A curious interest attaches to the life of Captain Reid, but it is not of the kind that casual biographers dwell upon. If he had written it himself it would have charmed thousands of readers, who can now merely imagine what it might have been from the glimpses of it which they obtain in his writings It was not passed in the fierce light of publicity, but in that simple, silent obscurity which is the lot of most men, and is their happiness, if they only knew it. Briefly related, the life of Captain Reid was as follows; He was born in 1818, in the north of Ireland, the son of a Presbyterian clergyman, who was a type of the class which Goldsmith has described so freshly in the "Deserted Village," and was highly thought of for his labors among the poor of his neighborhood. An earnest, reverent man, to whom his calling was indeed a sacred one, he designed his son Mayne for the ministry, in the hope, no doubt, that he would be his successor. But nature had something to say about that, as well as his good father. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hunters' Feast: Or Conversations Around the Camp-Fire TO the traveller, St. Louis is a place of peculiar interest. He will hear around him the language of every nation in the civilised world. He will behold faces Of every hue and variety Of expression. He will meet with men Of every possible calling. All this is peculiarly true in the latter part of the summer season. Then the motley population of New Orleans fly from the annual scourge of the yellow fever, and seek safety in the cities that lie further north. Of these. St. Louis is a favourite 'city of refuge, ' the Creole element Of its population being related to that kindred race in the South, and keeping up with it this annual correspondence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outdoor Pastimes of an American Hunter While a man is known by the friends he has, he is judged by the friend he is, and it is during the hours of his relaxations, and the periods of vacation from his routine work, that a man's personality is seen and judged by his friends. His public acts, if he be in public Office, are readily understood by them as the logical consequence of the characteristics they have learned to know, and have seen expressed in his hours of relaxation. By the great mass of the people of the United States Theodore Roosevelt was judged only by his public life, and the expression of his personality was seen through his fulfilment of public office. Fortunately for the traditions concerning him, soon after his death the book, Theodore Roosevelt's Let ters to His Children appeared, which moulded those traditions nearer reality than they ever otherwise would have been, for the majority Of men who had judged him by his public career alone, saw then in these letters the real personality with all the charm of its human quali ties. It would seem in the introduction to one of the books, which contains the records of trips taken by him for re laxation, or his short essays describing his observations and his thoughts at these times, that it would be most fitting to consider Theodore Roosevelt as a companion.
