Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a concise, systematic treatment of essential theories and practical aspects of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. It is designed for students pursuing courses in mechanical engineering both at diploma and degree level with a view to equipping them with a fundamental background necessary to understand the latest methodologies used for the design of refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. After reviewing the physical principles, the text focuses on the refrigeration cycles commonly used in air-conditioning applications in tropical climates. The subject of psychrometry for analysing the various thermodynamic processes in air conditioning is particularly dealt with in considerable detail. The practical design problems require comprehensive use of tables and charts prepared by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This text incorporates such tables and charts so that the students are exposed to solving real-life design problems with the help of ASHRAE Tables. Finally, the book highlights the features, characteristics and selection criteria of hardware including the control equipment. It also provides the readers with the big picture in respect of the latest developments such as thermal storage air conditioning, desiccant cooling, chilled ceiling cooling, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort. Besides the students, the book would be immensely useful to practising engineers as a ready reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A case can be made, and has been made by Pope Francis, that the extensive use of air conditioning use in the developed world, especially the United States, is a careless excess and poor example to the rest of the world. Indeed, it makes a mockery of the current ideology of energy sustainability including concerns about prevention of global warming. Extension of wasteful practices of air conditioning to emerging economies (like India) is easily shown to be unsustainable. As with other recalcitrant problems such as over-reliance on cars and poor personal health and dietary habits (smoking, processed foods) the source of the problem is found individual moral choices that are championed as individual freedoms but actually represent a degenerate morality which yields more benefit to corporations and big government than to people. The Buddhist ethic provides one path into the heart of human choices illuminating as it does the "incorrect thinking" that underlies bad choices including those that most people think are based on common sense and scientific expertise. This book applies this idea to the matter of air conditioning, using Thailand and like Southeast Asian settings as an example. It makes the claim that emerging western interest in "mindfulness" could be leveraged to introduce new thinking on personal energy use that will go much further to create true sustainability than programs based on "harnessing" geophysical technologies such as solar and wind.

Book excerpt: The dissertation investigates the scientific and business factors that have resulted in air-conditioning being a major contributor to climate-change. With his architectural background, the author demonstrates how a design methodology, not commonly adopted in scientific studies, may actually be a suitable way of dealing with a complex problem: the 'business as usual' scenario involving building science, sociological values and consumer behavior. Using his innovations as case studies, the author shows how good ideas cannot be evaluated on scientific merit alone and demonstrates why commercialization may have a pivotal role in deployment of research-based technology. He advances the theory of personalized thermal comfort which can potentially resolve the air-conditioning conundrum.

It provides relevant house and building information and highlights recent advances in hot and humid regions, as well as developments in other regions that are relevant to hot and humid climates. The countries in hot and humid regions, which include the tropical countries, the Middle Eastern countries around the Mediterranean, and many countries of Central Asia and Africa, are home to some of the most challenging conditions in the world in terms of house and building design and construction, and in terms of maintaining indoor thermal comfort and air quality in an energy-efficient way. The book’s respective chapters, prepared by expert contributors, cover essential concepts, designs, and construction methodologies for houses and commercial buildings. As such, the book offers a valuable resource for undergraduate and graduate students in architecture and engineering, house and building designers, and building sciences researchers. Building contractors, manufacturers and distributors of building equipment and devices, and government policymakers and legislators will also benefit from the information provided in this book.

This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In tropical, hot and humid climates where temperature and humidity level are high, air conditioning (AC) systems are necessary for providing thermal comfort to building occupants. For an air conditioned space that needs outside air ventilation to maintain indoor air quality, the ventilation air can bring sensible heat ratio (SHR) of cooling load well below 0.7 since it accounts for as high as 80% of total latent load in the space. The cooling load SHR below this value cannot be handled effectively by conventional AC systems. Handling sensible and latent load separately using a hybrid scheme is an interesting option. A desiccant system can handle the latent load while a conventional system can handle mainly the sensible load. This could help reduce overall energy consumption and provide effective control of indoor air condition. This book presents a theoretical and experimental investigation of the use of a liquid desiccant (LiCl) AC system in tropical Thailand. The system treated ventilation air before supplying it into a conditioned space. Solar energy was used for the regeneration process. A simulation procedure developed for evaluating the system performance is also presented.
