Book excerpt: “There are two kinds of people in this modern society. First and the majority are those fools who think they are wise, and second are the few wise individuals who know that they are fools.” In this seminal work, the celebrated humanitarian Scientist Abhijit Naskar, makes a breath-taking attempt to rekindle the spark of Humanism in the heart of thinking humanity. In Principia Humanitas, Naskar, the man who has brought Neuroscience into practice towards dismantling the citadels of religious conflicts, gives a wake up call to the moral compass of modern humans and reveals to us the path of individual and global progress. Principia Humanitas or The Principles of Humanism is a lucid handbook of pure humanism for the real humans of the thinking society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The very idea of humanity seems to be in crisis. Born in the ashes of devastation after the slaughter of millions, the liberal conception of humanity imagined a suffering victim in need of salvation. Today, this figure appears less and less capable of galvanizing the political imagination. But without it, how are we to respond to the inhumane violence that overwhelms our political and philosophical registers? How can we make sense of the violence that was carried out in the name of humanism? And how can we develop more ethical relations without becoming parasitic on the pain of others? Through a critical exploration of violence and the sacred, Ecce Humanitas recasts the fall of liberal humanism. Brad Evans offers a rich analysis of the changing nature of sacrificial violence, from its theological origins to the exhaustion of the victim in the contemporary world. He critiques the aestheticization that turns victims into sacred objects, sacrificial figures that demand response, perpetuating a cycle of violence that is seen as natural and inevitable. In novel readings of classic and contemporary works, Evans traces the sacralization of violence as well as art’s potential to incite resistance. Countering the continued annihilation of life, Ecce Humanitas calls for liberating the political imagination from the scene of sacrifice. A new aesthetics provides a form of transgressive witnessing that challenges the ubiquity of violence and allows us to go beyond humanism to imagine a truly liberated humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manfred Jurgensen was born between Denmark and Germany in the coastal border town of Flensburg in 1940, a 'midnight child'. He has always been sensitive to boundaries and what's beyond the borders, emotionally and physically. He has chosen to reveal his life history - to a very large extent dominated by World War II and its aftermath - in a highly original and unusual form. The protagonist and his lifetime experiences are wrapped within a semi-fictional presentation that he suggests might be called 'autofiction', or perhaps a 'bio-novel'. Throughout the narrative he philosophises about the nature of 'coincidence' as a life-force. Switzerland, formerly known as the excessively clean and prosperous 'neutral' country of war-torn Europe, is the symbolic present-day setting for this imaginative narrative. It begins just after he suffers a nervous breakdown while delivering a doctoral seminar at the University of Basle. In a luxurious sanatorium for mentally disturbed patients called Humanitas, he is asked to write about his life experiences, including his own awareness of the Nazi era and what it meant to be one of 'Hitler's children'; he is regularly interviewed by a Board of distinguished psychiatrists based on these accounts. An involuntary prisoner, he longs to achieve his freedom and be reunited with his wife.

Book excerpt: On the heels of his success with Humanitas, Fredric Roberts astonishes us yet again with his vibrant photography on virtually every page of Humanitas II, an in-depth and personal look at the face of the Gujurat. In a brilliant follow-up to his critically acclaimed book, Humanitas, Fredric Roberts continues his journey in search of humanity with Humanitas II, chronicling stories of beauty and grace, work and family, spirituality and devotion, while redefining photographic documentation and representation. This time he takes us to Mumbai and throughout the state of the Gujarat in India. Roberts' striking photographs explore India today and its links to the past. Here are day-to-day events as well as special ceremonies, giving us a firsthand view of these peoples that serves to the gap between "us" and "them." The subject often looks directly at the photographer and at the reader, effortlessly prompting a cross-cultural dialogue. Arthur Ollman, Director of the Museum of Photographic Arts, returns in this volume with a foreword, and Deborah Willis contributes her introduction to place this stunning second installment of Humanitas in context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
