Book Synopsis The Principle of Reason by : Martin Heidegger
Download or read book The Principle of Reason written by Martin Heidegger and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 1996-01-22 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Principle of Reason, the text of an important and influential lecture course that Martin Heidegger gave in 1955–56, takes as its focal point Leibniz's principle: nothing is without reason. Heidegger shows here that the principle of reason is in fact a principle of being. Much of his discussion is aimed at bringing his readers to the "leap of thinking," which enables them to grasp the principle of reason as a principle of being. This text presents Heidegger's most extensive reflection on the notion of history and its essence, the Geschick of being, which is considered on of the most important developments in Heidegger's later thought. One of Heidegger's most artfully composed texts, it also contains important discussions of language, translation, reason, objectivity, and technology as well as remarkable readings of Leibniz, Kant, Aristotle, and Goethe, among others.

Book Synopsis The Dictionary of Nineteenth-century British Philosophers by : W. J. Mander
Download or read book The Dictionary of Nineteenth-century British Philosophers written by W. J. Mander and published by Bloomsbury Academic. This book was released on 2002 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dictionary of Nineteenth-Century British Philosophers covers the period beginning (approximately) with Jeremy Bentham and ending with J.H. Muirhead. All the major 19th-century philosophers are here, but so too is a very wide range of less well-known writers, many of whom have not been mentioned elsewhere in philosophical encyclop dias or dictionaries. The importance of looking at minor figures is now widely accepted. These lesser lights often posed the problems that stimulated greater intellects, and it is usually the more obscure figures, not the luminaries, who are the typical representatives of the thought of a period. If an author contributed directly to the history of ideas or wrote for non-specialist readers about the way human beings perceive or respond to the world, he or she is included.

Book Synopsis The Myth of Aristotle's Development and the Betrayal of Metaphysics by : Walter E. Wehrle
Download or read book The Myth of Aristotle's Development and the Betrayal of Metaphysics written by Walter E. Wehrle and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2001-02-28 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this radical reinterpretation of Aristotle's Metaphysics, Walter E. Wehrle demonstrates that developmental theories of Aristotle are based on a faulty assumption: that the fifth chapter of Categories ('substance') is an early theory of metaphysics that Aristotle later abandoned. The ancient commentators unanimously held that the Categories was semantical and not metaphysical, and so there was no conflict between it and the Metaphysics proper. They were right, Wehrle argues: the modern assumption, to the contrary, is based on a medieval mistake and is perpetuated by the anti-metaphysical postures of contemporary philosophy. Furthermore, by using the logico-semantical distinction in Aristotle's works, Wehrle shows just how the principal 'contradictions' in Metaphysics Books VII and VIII can be resolved. The result in an interpretation of Aristotle that challenges mainstream viewpoints, revealing a supreme philosopher in sharp contrast to the developmentalists' version.
